Disappointed sums it up, expensive for what it actually is and this is NOT a hotel, the suites are apartments, which are feasts for the eyes but, maybe taking ye olde world to the extreme, torn upholstery, chairs that fall apart if you sit on them, bits falling off, bed was not very comfortable and was furnished with a blanket, I only hope that the blankets are washed between each guest and the noise from the suite above was disturbing. The reception is not in the same building as all of the rooms, and the girls working at reception have an air of superiority about them, not overly warm and welcoming. Gaining access to take luggage via taxi was a tad challenging as the castle staff clearly did not want to give access.
The suite itself comes with 5 separate areas, a seating area, dining, bathroom, kitchen and the bedroom, all means of entertainment is in the bedroom, it would have been good to have had either the bose system or a tv in the sitting area, to allow more use. The kitchen area was a waste in our opinion and was certainly not the cleanest, our fridge door didn't close properly. The bathroom was beautifully dressed with fired earth suite, room in the shower/over bath was limited, rain shower head could have been doing to be set back a touch closer to the wall, I personally hate shower curtains as they harbour bacteria/mould etc. Your breakfast (continental only) can be delivered to your room each morning, a nice touch, if you want something more exotic to eat then you have to make your way to the restaurant. There is NO room service, NO area to sit and relax outwith your suite to have a cocktail or people watch which is such a shame as the restaurant with rooms is at the foot of the castle esplanade.
Very traditional but it's all a bit fake, definitely does not deserve five stars or the price tag, if you are looking for a serviced apartment (which the Witchery is) then try the Fraser Suites further down the Royal Mile.

The witchery is a one of a kind hotel, in a fabulous location---right below the entrance to the Edinburgh castle. All of its rooms are huge suites, with bathrooms the size of many bedrooms. The hotel is essentially a restaurant with rooms--but what a special experience and the service was first class. It is the perfect hotel for a romantic escape. I stayed one night on business, because other hotels were sold out, and am now figuring out to come back for fun!

I have waited over 10 years to stay at this hotel. And finally.....my wish came true!
We booked to stay for 1 night in the Old Rectory. We got a "late deal" from the net and paid £230. Which although still expensive...its far, far cheaper than the normal rate. And the only thing you miss out on is the complimentary champagne. You stll get a huge bowl of ice with 2 bottles of mineral water, you still get the gorgeous cookies and you still get the same lovely, luxury smellies. So, my advice is...book the cheaper rate and take your own bottle of bubbles!

The room far exceeded any expectation! It was truly breathtaking. Something new to see every time you gazed around the room. We face the Royal Mile, some people may find it noisy, bit it really didnt bother us. To look out of your window and see people taking photos of your hotel and waving at you...well, you feel like royalty!

The tassles on the door is a lovely idea. Leave them on and the staff will give you utter privacy, take them off and you can have one of the staff turn down your bed and give the room a quick tidy while youre out.

The reception will book you taxis, they will help you decide where to visit and really do anything you need. These people know how to look after guests!!

The Witchery is unlike ANY hotel you will EVER visit! If you want chic and minimalism......look elsewhere. If you want opulent, gothic glamour with minimal gagets and gizmos....then what are you waiting for???? Book!!!

This place is over 400 years old and to be a part of it, even just for a few hours is something that will stay with your for ever.

As we left, walking to the station, I kept looking over my shoulder with real sadness at leaving it!

Well, think that says it all!

BTW, Roxy......you are fanflippintastic!!!!!! xx

Room Tip: All the rooms are different. Look through the pics on tripadvisor to see which takes your fancy. But...

We stayed at The Armoury Suite to chill out & relax after a big exhausting Edinburgh birthday weekend! :-) It was fabulous & we loved every second of our stay! Amazing suite, fabulous decor & a great welcome from Roxy! :-) The Armoury Suite had a cute view over the rickety old roof tops of Edinburgh's old town. Apparently some of the other suites have large sash windows overlooking the main street - but we were quite happy with our beautiful suite!
At check-in we couldn't park for very long at the entrance to The Witchery reception from the fear of being clamped & towed away by the "jobs worth" traffic wardens outside - Boo hiss!
However, Roxy carried our bags, personally showed us around our suite & gave us such a warm welcome that we felt instantly at ease.
We completely fell in love with The Armoury suite! There was a pink champagne reception with home made cookies and a beautiful wee foyer! The hallway, lounge, bathroom & bedroom were so thoughtfully decorated with unique & extraordinary antique furniture. It smelt & felt as though it'd been there in situ for hundreds of years! You could imagine Queens staying there ;)
The TV rising from the chest at the end of the bed was a winner for us & the big deep bath tub with Penhaligon's smellies were heavenly! We loved The WItchery slippers and thought the whole atmosphere & surroundings of the room were idyllic.
There were even a few modern touches!... GHD hair straightners & powerful hairdryer all plugged in & ready to go! Fab! ;) However, there was an extreme lack of power sockets to charge your mobile! But this was probably the only downside I could think of! Not bad eh?!
The Witchery restaurant was lovely (although not amazing). I had asparagus & hollindaise sauce with cheesey snacks for my starters and then Monk Fish on a bed of noodles & salad for my main meal which was delicious! Can't remember dessert?!
The Continental Breakfast in our sitting room was super - although it's a shame you can't have a full traditional Scottish breakfast? Apparently it's something to do with "Health & Safety" - complete tosh if you ask me! :-/
Can't wait to try out all the other suites! Thank you! :-) xxx

Room Tip: The Armoury Suite is fabulous! Although I hear ALL the suites are unique and amazing :)

Stayed here for a night in March 2012 as a present for my birthday and as part of a trip touring Scotland. All I can say was it was amazing from start to finish, loved everything about this hotel, great location for visiting the city. It was expensive but well worth the money for the experience. Staff were great, Roxy especially. We had dinner in the Secret garden, very romantic and brilliant food. We had the seafood platter to share, then I had the venison which was delicious and very well presented. They had a great wine list to accompany their menu. It was all round great!! The suite was very comfortable and extremely luxurious, the bed was so comfy that it was hard to get up in the morning. Bathroom had a stand alone roll top bath in the centre of the bathroom, seperate toilet and a his & her;s sinks.....great idea. We both loved the fact that we could have breakfast in our room in the morning. It was a shame that we were not here for 2 nights, next time it will be

Room Tip: The Armoury
