“Old 'n Dirty”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2013

The hostel is incredibly well located, just a few steps away from the Royal Mile (the big promenade that links the Edinburgh Castle with the Hollyrood Palace), so the location couldn't be better.
The problem there was the dirty. There were always trash and leftovers all over the hostel, the bathrooms had a terrible aspect and the room smelled unbelievably! The carpet was disgusting, the duvets and pillows smelled like swet and there was absolutelly no air circulation. I don't recommend it, except if you don't mind about staying in a really dirty place.

We stayed in this hostel after reading a few reviews and because the cost was on the lower side of what else we had found. The location is good (just up the steps from Waverley Station) and central for site-seeing, shopping and a night out. It was my birthday so we wanted to make the weekend a little special so opted for a private ensuite room. The person at check in was lovely and made us feel welcome but then we were told our room was in another building which didnt make us too confident! The room was clean but very small for two people- it only had the two beds in the room (which touched forming a claustriphobic L shape and very little floor space to move around. The bathroom was also very small which made two people trying to get ready for a night out very difficult! The beds were comfy however we were on the main corridor so throughout the night / early hours of the morning, we were kept awake by people coming back and also walking past us to use the bathroom! Also, every time the water was used there was a very loud clunk which kept waking us up especially in the morning. Also the checkout time of 10am is also somewhat inconvient, especially as they charge £3.00 for luggage storage!

>We had some trouble finding a room to stay because everyhting was full that weekend but we were lucky to find this place (unfortunetely just for 1 night)... I can only talk about our room that was a private one; it was great, very spacious, it a was a studio, with kitchen, etc. and it was cheap!
The staff was nice and the location is perfect!

We spent two nights in this hostel on a rainy weekend. We got what we expected, a typical hostel with a very helpful staff and located very close to the main attractions, bars and restaurants. I can recommend it to every backpacker on a trip to Edinburgh.

This was quite frankly the worst hostel experience I've had to date and I'm not overly fussy. A friend and I stayed for the weekend and wanted something cheap, cheerful and close to the centre city. We got cheap, we got close to the city centre...we did not get cheerful. Upon arriving at the reception we were told we were staying in a house adjacent to the hostel. We walked down a back alley and arrived at a number 16 wooden door covered in graffiti with homeless people lying outside. Our first thoughts was 'is this a brothel'. The inside was musty, old and the room very cramped! One shower was broken and the other freezing, my friend also got bites we can only guess from the bed. The noise at night was ridiculous as there was a bar and takeout on the lane below. We ended up rising in the early hours of our 2nd night and making an escape to a friends house who lived outside the city. In this case location was not everything. I wouldn't recommend even to an enemy.

I needed to stay somewhere close to the centre after arriving on a late flight. The hostel is under 5 mins from the airport bus dropoff so this place was perfect. They have 24hr checkin, so my late arrival wasn't an issue.

I chose the single private room, which was in the seperate building. It was very quiet and even included a towel. I got a good night's sleep at a bargain price and was right in the middle of Edinburgh ready for a full day.

The shower was OK but they could do with a deep clean as there was a lot if hair!!

My friends and I were just looking for a cheap place to stay within a walking distance from every thing and that's about what we got! It was in a PERFECT location and it was really cheap! However, the private room we had was across the alley and there were drunk people outside ALL night/morning yelling and singing. Obviously when you stay in a city you can expect that, I just wasn't expecting it all night long. But for the price we paid and the location of the hostel, I would probably stay there again!
