Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel
Reviewed 15 March 2014 via mobile

The bathrooms were incredibly dirty. The kitchen is tiny and most cupboards are for 'staff only.' A lot of people staying are work for accommodation people who are often rude and unfriendly. The wifi worked and beds were ok. They give free earplugs because it's very noisy outside. Overall, other hostels seem to offer a lot more for not much more in price.

We stayed in this hostel for a weekend, which was great! The location is perfect, you can walk everywhere (also back to the hostel from the pubs etc). The rooms were clean, as well as the bathroom. The staff is friendly and the breakfast deal with Southern Cross cafe is good. Wifi for free.
The only thing is that the hostel (beds, bathroom etc) is quite old. But on the other hand, for this price you can't expect anything fancier!

It's affordable, super clean and the staff are as friendly as can be. Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel is located in the heart of Scotland's capital, literally around the corner from the train station making it a perfect location for on foot backpackers. The picturesque setting has great views of surround parks and is just minutes' walk from all the best attractions in Edinburgh and a stones throw from the Royal Mile. This is the ideal hostel for all young travellers.

Things I liked: location (easily found from Waverley trains station, bus station and airport) which is actually at the center of all tourist attractions, clean bedding and toilets, very good wifi, 24h reception, TV and definitely the price. However, rooms are very very small (we rented twin private bedroom), the carpet was dirty but these are the only things I didn't like. Actually, I'd recommend this hostel for those who look at the price and location as the most important things.

This is the first hostel I've stayed in but I'm extremely happy with the security and cleanliness! The location is perfect too! A 24 hour reception was the main reason I choose to stay here and I'd definitely stay here again and recommend it to anybody visiting Edinburgh! The communal toilets are very clean and the bedding was extremely clean and smelt fresh which is always reassuring! As a female staying by myself I felt very safe especially seen as the front door only allows people to enter once they've pressed a buzzer and the receptionist has opened the door, the receptionists were very friendly and helpful too! Definitely recommend staying here, very well priced for what you get!

I have just returned from a 2 night stay in a private double room at the Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel. We arrived considerably earlier than than the 1pm check in time but the reception staff were really friendly and advised that we could leave our bags there for free until our room was ready.

We we returned at 1pm were were promptly checked in with no hassle and the staff politely advised there was a 10 pound deposit for the room key and advised that we would be staying in a separate building merely 100 yards away right on the Royal Mile. We had a little trouble getting into the front door with the key but once we entered the flat we were pleasantly surprised given the nature of some previous reviews. We had a private double room in a flat with a shared kitchen and bathroom. There was one other bedroom but the other guests were hardly there so gave us no issues. The place was spotless and were were given clean towels and toilet rolls.

It wasn't the Ritz but given the price of the hostel I thought it was great value for money and I would have no hesitation staying there again. I must emphasize how amazing the location is. It is central to Edinburgh Castle, Holyrod Palace, Camera Obscura, St Giles Cathedral and Princes Street Gardens.

The only downside was that the check out time of 10am is a little early but we could leave our luggage in the hostel reception until we needed to leave for the airport.

It has been the worst hostel that we have ever been! The photos from the internet can't be from the same place! We staied in another building that smelled bad, in a room w/ a window that give to a wall. The man's bathroom had very poor conditions. My bed was broken and on the third and last night, they made us change places at 11 pm, because they made a mistake. No words for that! Although hostels are cheaper the customers deserve respect.
