“Friendly, fun environment”

Stayed here with my boyfriend in the 10 bed dorm and we both loved it. It's not fancy or posh but it's really laid back, there's awesome castle themed decor, location is great and the staff were really friendly. For people trying to find it on google maps it's up high! I was on the road running below it and had a bit of trouble at first.
Hair dryers are free, just require a deposit, towels are like 20p to hire or something crazy, there's cheap breakfast, free tea/coffee/hot chocolate anytime, and the staff are happy to hold your bags and let you use the facilities even after you've checked out which helped a lot seeing as our last day we climbed Arthur's seat.
They have loads of common areas, pool table, music room, internet room, reading nook. So would be good for long stays too. Would recommend this place to friends and would stay here again.

Spent a short 3 nights in this place, staff was great, very helpful and friendly. Felt overall it was a very chill atmosphere compared to a few other hostel I've stayed in. The beds were comfortable, kept clean. I would stay here again. Location is amazing.

I really enjoyed my stay at Castle Rock. The location was good - right off the Royal Mile and within walking distance of just about everything! The hostel had a unique atmosphere - it was decorated and each room was unique and beds numbered to the theme of the room!! Big bathrooms, but we had to walk across the whole second floor to get to them from our room (annoying in the middle of the night). Lockers were provided and good! Breakfast was cheap (£1.50) and more than enough!! Awesome space for a self catering kitchen although it could be cleaned a bit more often! And there were lots of different lounge rooms depending on what you wanted (study/computer room, tv room, music room, eating room). The staff were awesome and always helpful!! Only thing I didn't like was the orange card to get in. All in all, I would recommend Castle Rock and I'd stay Here again!!

I stayed at castle rock in a 10 bed dorm for a night, and then for 2 nights after traveling. I had fun staying there. The rooms are themed (I was in the vw bed in the beetles room) and all the hallways have medieval decorations. Lots of places to hang out and great cooking and food storage facilities. There were a lot of long term people which took away from it a bit. Breakfast was reasonable, 1.50 pounds gets juice cereal and a roll. Laundry was 3.50 and they dried everything too. Wifi only works on one floor.
Overall a very good experience. Would stay there again.

Loved this hostel. Stayed in an 8 bed female dorm. Safety was priority- couldn't get past reception without your orange card, it was clean, and the staff very courteous! There is a good sized kitchen so you could store food if you like to shop for lunch meats for the week, plus they kept the fridges routinely cleaned. Good cheap breakfast, plenty of space to hang around and the view from my bunk was beautiful (stayed in pesca bed in the currency room) the lockers were spacious and easy to keep organized during our stay

The location was very nice, easy to get to everything.............

The only weird thing was coed bathrooms... Awkward when you're trying to shower easily and worrying about flashing a bunch of men or vice versa ;)

Overall though my favorite hostel to date............. ....

After seeing the reviews I was so excited to stay here. Was I disappointed! Location is good, but the four bedroom was TINY, with a sloping roof, so you couldn't stand up in one half of the room. The kitchen was SO dirty, I almost reconsidered cooking. And it's a shame the place is full of so many long termers, making the atmosphere less conducive to meeting other travellers. Shame!

I had stayed in many different hostels in many different cities, but this one was something else… Edinburgh is an amazing city, but I am not sure if going back for just to stay in Castle Rock Hostel, or to visit the city is more tempting :)) I had checked out from this hostel just yesterday (13/06/2014) with a big smile on my face :) from the first moment to last moment the staff behaves very friendly, and kindly; the rooms with special names for each (I stayed in 10mixed room) are very clear and individual reeding lamps, plug-ins, and lockers are provided (most of the hostels lack that); its huge and full of young people which you can build friendships very easily in a second :D...the common areas: movie room, huge kitchen, clean toilets, and showers, laundry service, very cheap snacks, only 1.5pound breakfast, and FREE coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and PROPERLY working FREE wifi are the other things that make it perfect. Hopefully I can visit them soon again :)

Room Tip: any room would be perfect I believe
