“Great Location, comfortable rooms”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

Stayed here 20th April for one night. Didn't pay for it as I managed to get it for free through HIE Best Price Gaurantee. They do give you a free night if you find another hotel cheaper on the same date, same room and same terms and conditions. Be careful with T & Cs they must be exactly the same, ie., refundable cancellation if cancelled on the day of visit. It is worthwhile checking out other hotels because I have come across the price difference with this hotel before. Customer service is really good as they email you within 24hrs with confirmation of best price claim. Hotel is clean, rooms comfortable and breakfast adequate. The best thing about this hotel is the bus links to the city centre. The bus stop is right outside the hotel going and coming back, buses run every 10-15 mins which is great especially with the awful tram works going on - leave the car. We were offered a late check out which was great for an extra visit to Ocean Terminal (Shopping Centre) across the road. I have stayed at this hotel before and will do so again.

The disabled room was a little small if you have a wheelchair, but the bathroom was good with a wetroom shower. Access was easy from the level ground floor facilities via the wide entrance lift. Parking was free (as it should be at every hotel), and the staff extreemly polite and helpful.
They ran out of wine in the evening after selling two bottles, and only offered two kinds of pizza as the food option, although several local restaurants offered a delivery service and you were welcome to eat this in the Great Room, and enjoy all day comp coffee and fruit juices. The location, opposite the Ocean Terminal, Shopping Centre and Royal Yacht Britannia was ideal for us, and there is a good, cheap and regular bus service to the centre of Edinburgh.
Whilst at long last Holiday Inn Express are offering an included hot breakfast, this consisted of a choice of three - sausage, baked beans and some form of scrambled eggs. The eggs were poor, very overcooked and dry, but the cold selection of meats, fruit and cheese was good.
Overall the stay was very good, and I would happily return again, but hope that the eggs improve.
By all means stay in the city centre if you wish, but remember that parking can be a problem, as can the noise, so this option in Leith (well signposted if you follow The Royal Yacht signs) may well be better if you value your sleep!

Dear 7622Jon,

Many thanks for posting a review of your recent stay on tripadvior.

I’m delighted that you found our staff extremely polite and helpful.

I’m glad that you appreciated the wetroom shower in our accessible room though disappointed that you thought the room itself was a little small.

We only introduced our limited pizza menu midway through March and now that we have seen how successful this has been will be adding extra choices soon.

I’m sorry that the eggs at breakfast were dry and overcooked and this may have been caused by the fact that they had been in the hot display unit for a long period of time. I’ll ensure that this is checked on a more frequent basis in future.

As you’ve pointed out parking and noise can be an issue in the city so we are in an ideal location for those who like things a little quieter.

I do hope that we can have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

Kind regards,

Andrew Leonard,
General Manager

If you want Leith, stay here - for Edinburgh go stay in Edinburgh. But this is your typical HIE and its fine. Nice newish hotel with free breakfast and OK rooms. Small but clean and Leith is a fun area (but a bit risky at night).

You cant go wriong with a HIE (mostly!)

Spent a week here in April. Rooms are small for a family, one double bed with a pull out sofa. When the sofa is extended, there is a narrow aisle around the bed, and one side of the sofabed is against the wall. The sofabed then blocks access to the storage shelves.
There is no closet and no ironing board, which is odd for a "business" hotel.
Room was clean, and the shower was nice. The soap and shampoo are coconut scented, which might be an issue for some people.
We had a problem with the air conditioner overnight during the third night, but the staff moved us the following day.
Free breakfast, coffee and hot chocolate are available all day. Free wifi, but this is first HIExpress I've been to that charges for internet access in the "business center", which is not even in a separate room, but an alcove off the lobby.
Location is convenient to the mall, waterfront, and the Brittania, with easy access by bus to the Royal Mile.

Dear RickH86,

Many thanks for posting a review of your recent stay at the hotel and for your constructive comments.

I’m delighted that you found our rooms to be comfortable and enjoyed the power shower in the en-suite bathroom.

All Holiday Inn Express bedrooms are built to the same size and standard and do not offer ironing boards in the room, though of course these are available on request from reception.

As you have stated we do offer free wi-fi access in our public areas for those guests who have there own laptops or smart phones. For those guests who do not have this facility we also offer the use of an internet access desk and the charge for this is great value at £1.00 for 20 minutes use.

The hotel is ideally situated for visiting shops and restaurants in the waterfront area and I’m glad that you found the public bus stop at the entrance to the hotel convenient for visiting the city centre.

Kind regards,

Andrew Leonard

The good parts - friendly and efficient staff; very clean; modern; well maintained; quiet comfortable rooms; good value.
The not so good parts - ideal location for Leith but a bit too far out for Central Edinburgh (tho the bus service is good); cheap towels in the rooms; no plug sockets near the bedroom mirror.
The poor part - breakfast - really poor quality ingredients. After the first morning we went out for breakfast (even the thought that it was "free" couldn't tempt us!).
Overall - we would be very happy to stay at this hotel again but would eat elsewhere.

Dear Millie211,

Thanks you so much for posting your review on tripadvisor.

I’m delighted that you found our staff to be friendly and efficient and our rooms comfortable, very clean and well maintained.

I’m disappointed to hear that you were unhappy with our free breakfast offering. Whilst all items may not be to everyone’s taste, as well as offering hot items such as sausages, beans and scrambled eggs, we also offer warm croissants, a choice of muffins, a selection of fruit and natural yoghurts, sliced cheese, grapefruit segments, a wide selection of cereals, fresh fruit, toast and preserves and tea and coffee.

The very frequent public bus service which runs very frequently from just outside the entrance to the hotel is an ideal way to journey to the city centre. This means that those guests travelling by car need not worry about parking in the city as they can leave their car at the hotel and make use of the public bus service into the city.

I’m glad that you would be very happy to stay with us again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Kind regards,

Andrew Leonard

Spent 3 nights here in April, the room was well worth the money spent. Bed was comfortable with a choice of pillows (soft or firm) and room was clean. The free breakfast is excellent with a variety of choice (both warm and cold).

The reception we received on arrival was excellent. We arrived early and requested an early check in, not only did they allow us to check in early, they also told us that even though we had checked in early, because breakfast was still taking place we were welcome to put our luggage away then come back down to get something to eat! Wow talk about great service!

Excellent location: close (5 minute walk) to mall with nice restaurants and cinema, bus stop right outside the door with regular buses heading into the city!

My only complaint would be that our shower was only luke warm! But that would not stop me from recommending it to others.
