And then this happened............

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Oct 2019
We stayed, yet again, for one night on business.

My wife was feeling really poorly to the extent that we cancelled our dinner reservation because she simply wasn't up to going out.

Check in was a breeze and the delightful Fabio had a pot of hot tea sent to our room for my wife.

So early night for us, which turned out to be a bonus: bed and pillows as reported in other reviews are comfortable and our room, 227, overlloking the Mile, didn't receive any noise from outside, but did suffer from noise from the corridor.

And then this happened......at 0631 the fire alarm went off: my wife in her doped up state told me to ignore it as it was a test. Not at 0631 darling ! So out of bed, threw on some clothes and off we go to the fire exit.

Down the stairs we troop, followed by other guests to be met by a guy coming up the stairs into the hotel carrying a coffee and newspapers: you are going the wrong way fella!

Outside into Niddrie Street where the crowds are gathering and then up on to the Mile. There must have been 500+ people in various states of dress outside in a temperature of no more than 3 degrees with a cold wind coming of the Forth.

The staff did a great job of rounding up the guests and arranged for respite from the weather in the Hilton on George Bridge across the street: well done there.

Fire service turned up and after 20 mintues or so we were all allowed back inside. It does make me chuckle that the fire trucks have logos on them stating "Scottish Fire and Rescue" . Do they enquire as to your nationality before dragging you out of an
inferno?

Lots of people decide to go straight to breakfast which pretty much overwhelmed the restaurant. Certainly didn't overwhelm the elderly American couple who decided that waiting in line to be seated wasn't for them! "I'll see if our table is ready"

Breakfast was again a huge disappointment: the cold cuts are just OK, the fruit selection is uninspired and the bread station simply cannot cope when the place is busy: a single toaster generates long queues.

There is still no egg station, although you can order an omelette or Eggs Benedict from a very light a la carte menu. The Rad Blu at East Midlands Airport has a fantastic egg station cooking eggs any way you like on demand so it isn't that difficult to implement.

The "hot food" isn't: the scrambled eggs were cold, what was left of the fried egg was hideously over done. The tattie scones were like frisbees. Hash browns a la McDonalds from a huge packet are not part of a traditional Scottish breakfast. The sausages I wouldn't give to my dog, and he likes sausage! They were cold, over cooked and hard: Scottish sausage is normally beef, these were pork.

The black pudding was dry and overdone and yet again there was no lorne sausage. I didn't take any haggis as it looked utterly unappealing. The mushrooms were a soggy disaster, swimming in water - and I know mushrooms generate water when cooked, but do it properly and it evaporates. The best bit of the breakfast has to be the beans, but it really is difficult to make a mess of heating a can of baked beans!

The "hot food" is stored in bain maries which simply does not work: it doesn't keep the food hot at all but continues cooking it a very low soggy temperature.

On multiple responses on reviews we see that compliants and comments about breakfast will be referred variously to "our F&B team / management, our kitchen management team etc": referring is all very well but they aren't making any changes!!

On check out we weren't offered anything for the fire alarm inconvenience, no offer of a voucher against a future stay - nada, and remarks about breakfast - which we couldn't eat incidentally, didn't engender any response other than a bill for close on £34.

This is a nice hotel with good staff but the food at breakfast is horrible: save your money and go onto the Mile for a cheaper and better breakfast.

This trip far acceded our expectation. Hotel is in the middle of Royal Mile, within walking distance to shopping, pubs, restaurants and transportation. The Concierge (thank you Roy), housekeeping and wait staff in the restaurant and bar are eager to help you and make you feel welcomed.

Well located hotel, near the mile, a bit noisy during the night, but comfortable. Good renovated layout, spacious. Good bathroom. Could use fitted sheets instead of the duvet as the only bed covering.

great location and clean. there was no employees giving directions when we needed to evacuate in the middle of the night after someone set the smoke alarms off in the stairwell. Check in and out was so easy. no top sheets on beds, you sleep on a feather bed that does not cover the entire bed which made it awkward.
