We arrived tired from driving from Wales and were told room was not ready, but were given
complimentary soft drinks at the bar. When we were shown our room it faced the not very nice
side of the hotel- a real letdown since the room was very nice. We were upgraded to a fantastic
front facing room, but told it would only be for a day. We stayed 2 nights in that room and checked out of our own accord. The hotel is very hip and at times the staff tries too hard to be hip which ends up in them being aloof. If you go, make sure to explore the restaurants in the area- really good (Mimi's down the street for breakfast /Fischer"s across the the street for fine seafood. They just need to stop trying to be so hip and be more attentive to their guests. Nice products in the bathroom. Location is far from city center..

me and my gf stayed for just one night and this was a very nice place to stay and finished to a high standard. food was very nice. had a boiled egg in the morning, which was perfect. staff in brasserie were very nice, but there was a few dislikes about this hotel. 1. was check in was 3:00 which we didn't arrive till half 3 and got told room wasn't ready and got a free -non-alcoholic drink and was told half an hour which we had been dragging bags with us for about 2 hours around and were very tired after a long train journey also, but 40 mins later we go back and then finally get told it was ready and we weren't happy and receptionist couldn't give us the reason why it was not, we received a bad sorry who seemed like she couldn't care. apart from that it was very nice that is the reason for the 4* instead of 3*

Room Tip: we got a standard room which was very nice, but there are a lot of upgrades to rooms or suites.

We stayed the night at the Hotel after a visit to Martin Wishart's restaurant in Leith.

Firstly, the location is great...very close to loads of great restaurants and bars.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, but the hotel is starting to show its age and looks a bit tied around the edges.

The room (suite) was very nice, but again starting to show age....the wardrobe handles were broken, the hairdryer did not work and the shower in to the bath did not drain quickly.

The bar was busy and fun, drinks were made well and the service was excellent.

Breakfast was very good, good choice and the hot food well cooked.

With a make over this hotel would be excellent, but would still stay there again.

My hubby and I had a really special 3 nights at the Malmaison in Leith and found the hotel to be excellent in every way. It is set in a spectacular location and is in a beautiful, imposing and historic building.

Our room (117) was HUGE, the bed was the biggest I've ever seen, the decor was fresh and stylish and every little thing you could want was provided. Particularly liked the Nespresso coffee machine and am now hoping Father Christmas will bring me one (I believe it comes with a free George Clooney...). The room was very quiet and we did not hear a peep from any of the other guests.

There was even a tiny creditcard sized waterproof map provided which showed a 5k run from the hotel door which I took advantage of. Not often you get to run across the front steps of the Scottish Parliament!

We had dinner in the restaurant and the service, was prompt, courteous and friendly, and the food was delicious and cooked to perfection. The breakfasts were excellent and plentiful - ate far too much!

The carpark is right behind the hotel (free) and the surrounding area of Leith is full of some really top-class restaurants, bistros and bars that are definitely worth exploring. It is very easy to get into the city centre (we walked but there are loads of buses and taxis) where there is some really fantastic shopping to be had (thanks, Mr B!).

In short, I would happily recommend the Malmaison in Leith to anyone. Go! You'll love it.

Room Tip: I beieve some rooms even allow pets so ask if you want to take pooch for a luxury break too!

The hotel is lovely nice decor and friendly staff, However it is too far out of the city centre and there is very little to do locally. The room was very big with two double beds and a large bathroom. There was also a good entertainment system and minibar. We were there for the fringe festival and so given the distance from the city we wouldnt return til late we found that the room service menu was very limited especially for vegitarians and also very expensive
I must say that much of the negatives of this hotel were made up for by the friendly helpful staff

Living out of hotels I have stayed in many. I was pleasantly surprised by the Malmaison never having stayed in the chain before. Pleasant efficient check in and a very comfortable room and bathroom with Sky sports and audio equipment an added bonus. Drinks easily located, in a cupboard as is often the case with ground coffee a pleasant change from the cheap usual sachets. Comfortable nights sleeps were followed by a wholesome breakfast.
Staff were always pleasant and attentive, and even located lost property for me with a minimum of fuss - thank you. Only downside was that the hotel is the wrong side of Edinburgh for me but is close enough to the centre. Overall very pleased and would revisit.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
