Had a family lunch here - my mother-in-law was 90 and we wanted something special for her. The Hotel really worked hard to make it a good experience. Because a larger party came in they wanted to move us to the bar to eat, but we told them that the bar wasn't really the right setting for such a special day, it's not every day you get to a 90th birthday. So they booked us into a private dining room and when we arrived they really turned on the service. Everything was perfect, incredibly polite and helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. The food took ages to come out, was not piping hot and not quite a delicious as promised. It could be because they had such a large party in the main dining room or that because we were so far away from the kitchen it cooled down. However the effort deserves 5 stars and I'm prepared to give them another go. The food though would only get 3 stars this time. Good experience let down by the kitchen.

My friend and I took ourselves to Edinburgh for a bit of retail therapy. We decided to stay at Malmaison as we felt it offered good value for money and probably provided good accommodation. I have to say it was just 'ok' - nothing to write home about.
The corridors are painted dark teal blue and they are narrow anyway, so the decor accompanied by a dark carpet made the whole thing very oppressive. I am a claustrophobic and the dark colours made it worse - accessing some of the rooms without using the lift was really difficult - worth a note if you are thinking about staying and have a claustrophobic propensity!.
The bedroom was quite small but functional and it was dark too - this was probably made worse by the fact that our window looked on to another wall so there was little natural light. There is limited hanging space in the wardrobe and only a couple of small drawers for clothing.
The bathroom was lovely and well supplied with basics and also extra bits and bobs.
There were a few niggly issues:- We had no milk in our room when we arrived (not even UHT) and we had to ask for some to be delivered, room service breakfast is continental only, there was no hot water on Sunday morning as the boiler had gone off (how did this happen?) and when we got down for breakfast on Sunday that was a story in itself........ I was disappointed to find only two types of juice on offer - orange or grapefruit, the selection of cooked breakfasts is somewhat limited and on both occasions we had breakfast the food could not be described as hot but the most annoying thing was the noise in the dining room. On the Sunday morning the staff clumped about and made a terrible noise with their footwear on the wooden floor - I know it sounds ridiculous but it was so irritating - Monday morning (possibly different staff working) was calm and quieter.
Would I stay again? I doubt it - it was ok but the dark colours really put me off - it was not relaxing at all - apparently according to the receptionist all the Malmaison hotels are done in dark colours so you have been warned!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the river.

We had a brilliant overnight stay in this hotel! We were lucky enough to stay in a superior room and it was beautiful, would recommend it if you wished to pay that wee bit extra. Lovely large bed and bathroom with all the amenities you could think of.
We went for dinner in the hotel's restaurant and the food was delicious with very helpful staff that chatted to you and made you feel welcome. Breakfast was also included in the package we received and it was mouth watering. We were able to order off the hot menu as well as having our pick of the continental table. I had waffles with bacon and maple syrup (yummy but massive!) and my partner had a full Scottish breakfast, just what we needed before going and exploring the shops close by.
Would definitely return to this hotel!

This hotel is located near lots of good restaurants and bars in Leith. We stayed for 2 nights in a standard double room which was on the small side. A number of things just weren't to the standard we would expect of this hotel chain: No milk on the tea / coffee tray, pillows very soft, breakfast service very slow on the Saturday although there appeared to be adequate staff who looked very busy but a bit chaotic! The decor in the corridors is very dark and oppressive. On a positive note reception staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Superb hotel, well priced and the service and attention to detail from the staff is unrivalled ! Apart from being 10-15 mins from the centre the hotels location has some fine restaurants and bars. I Can't wait for my next trip.

The bed was oh so comfy, fluffy white towels, brilliant white sheets and a nice spacious room. Can't knock this place awesome! The snacks and bar in the room a bit on the pricey side however a very handy mini sainsbury just round the corner! The No 16 bus goes into Edinburgh & can be picked up just by the bridge. Some nice restaurants and bars in the vicinity.

Room Tip: There are probably rooms with a view over the river.

Stayed here before and enjoyed it so when I saw an Itison deal for dinner, bed and breakfast I snapped it up. The hotel is on the water front in Leith and there are a few lovely bars and restaurants around with real character.
The hotel is in a lovely old building and the decor is quirky and interesting. We had a lovely room with a view of the harbour. The room was lovely and cosy with all the amenities you could wish for.
Our deal included a three course meal and a bottle of wine. The food was very good as was the service and the restaurant was very nice.
Breakfast was excellent with a very well stocked buffet and your hot food was cooked to order and was delicious.
There is also a nice cosy bar to enjoy pre dinner drinks.
Really enjoyed this hotel and will definately go back as it is really close to Edinburgh and also offers free parking which is a bonus.

Room Tip: We had a harbour front room which was lovely.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
