First up, this is a LONG way from Edinburgh centre. It's in Leith which is a good 25 minutes from town on the bus. Leith shore itself is OK if you like overpriced wine-bar gastropub chic - I'm not so keen. Second up, on a basic rate there is no breakfast and very little in the way of extras. Yeah the toiletries are great, but once you've got half a dozen from previous Malmaison visits it kind of fades. The room I had was smallish, no view, overheated by storage heaters (storage heaters????) and the windows were impossible to shut once open so I had to stuff cushions in the gap until I could actually see the tiny instructions on closing them in the morning. It was also beginning to show signs of wear, scuffed furniture etc..... It's fine but just lacks the pizzazz you expect at this end of the market.

We (7) went to Malmaison for Christmas Eve (3 courses for £30) and the meal was excellent! I had a steak which was literally mouth-watering! All the other guys with me had equally great meals. Thankyou for the food, service and general ambience. A truly memorable experience!

We have recently stayed in the malmaison, on arrival given a lucky 13 card NO terms& conditions with it ? on the card offering throughout january 50 per cent off on producing the card meal reduction"what it didnt say was this offer didnt begin till the 3rd january?? so it wasnt really as advertised"Why give the card in the first place when our stay ended on January 2nd???the small print&i might add the very grey faint writing down one side you would still struggle to read with a magnifying glass!!! it is also not available on a saturday!! all other vouchers you had to download!! who goes on holiday &starts to download vouchers?? MALMAISON NEED TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER AND GIVE GENUINE OFFERS & STOP RIPPING OFF THE GENERAL PUBLIC. Also on our stay i felt the need to complain about the smell in the lift from several dogs staying in the hotel at the time"thankfully our room cleanliness made up for the other bad experiences we had"we were lucky enough not to be in a room where a dog had occupied it before us,anyone visiting PLEASE READ YOUR VERY SMALL PRINT DONT FALL FOUL AS WE DID,

Room Tip: room backed on to bottle bank very noisy&warehouses

Having previously stayed at the malmaison i was looking forward to stay here again, however this visit was a disappointment. this may be because this time round we were allocated a room in a deifferent wing. as soon as we entered the room there was a terrible draft from the windows, the room was small and the bathroom looked tired in desperate need of a makeover. I was looking forward to a nice relaxing soak after a long 3hour journey but couldn't face it with the mould on the bathtub. I wouldn't stay here again.

We had a superior double which was lovely - but the room was very dark and there was not enough lighting - a real struggle when trying to locate things in your make up bag! The food was excellent, the staff friendly - particularly in the restaurant and there was a pleasant atmosphere. Lovely soap in the bathroom but the smell of the shower gel was horrible.

Room Tip: Bring a torch!

You know you're in for a treat when you stay in a Malmaison Hotel.
Alas this Mal isn't as quirky as their Liverpool offering which has a Beatles theme to it, but don't let that put you off - this is a fine hotel.

The Hotel is located in Leith, which is a tad out of town, but has the benefit of a bit more space, and free car parking too. If you do need to get in to town, (Princes Street, etc), it's around 10 minutes away in a cab, or you could take a bus.

There's plenty to do in Leith, and there are some lovely bars and restaurants to enjoy too.

The check-in process was smooth and I was given a lovely room in the newer part of the hotel.
The room had everything I needed, including a lovely big bed.
It was quiet too.

The breakfast was great, with a "help yourself" continental part, and an "order off the menu" part for anything hot.

This is a fun hotel. The design / decor has been well thought out and cleverly implemented.

You'll enjoy your stay in this hotel, and I'm sure you'll like the surrounding area too.

We've returned today from a 3 night stay at the Edinburgh Malmasion and it was a wonderful Christmas treat. Our room was spacious and bright, with a little plate of mince pies and satsumas on the table with a personalised Christmas card to greet us. The hotel is an old seamans mission building, in an area of Edinburgh that has become more popular and there is an array of restaurants from which to choose for dinner should you wish to give the Malmaison brasserie a miss.

Breakfast each day was perfect, and the staff attentive and friendly. Super Hendricks gin and tonics in the bar too!

Having stayed at Malmaisons Glasgow and Newcastle, the Edinburgh version holds its own, but the bedroom furnishings do not feel as luxurious as Newcastle .... indeed, my only minor point is that the curtains were very dusty at the top, and a very cheap looking curtain pole meant that they did not hang correctly. (Housekeeping, check room 327 curtains in the top left hand corner - they need a brush!)

That said, it was a wonderful stay, and I'd go again for Christmas!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel, as it overlooks the water.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
