“Best Hotel in Edinburgh!!!”
Reviewed 28 January 2013

Hi i actually meant to review this hotel after christmas but better later than never. Myself and 6 friends spent xmas day at the malmaison Hotel. We had the most fabulous lunch that consisted of 6 courses and not one of us had any complaints. The food was excellent quality and value for money and the only problem we had was what to choose as their was such a great selection for each course. We also spent the night at the hotel as the deal was that is you stayed for lunch then you could book a room for and extra 25 pound, bargain!!!

The staff were great, helpful and polite which for xmas day was a bonus as we always feel that going to restaurants etc on xmas day staff just want to serve you as quickly as possible and then get home, fair enough. We also spoke to the GM, Mr Campbell who was overseeing the day and if anyone had any complaints then he was on hand, another bonus which show's that this hotel has ticked all the correct boxes to make our xmas day lunch a success. Bonus point for all of us was no one was driving so everyone could relax and retire when they wanted to. Thank you to all the staff for a lovely xmas day and a nice clean house to return to on Boxing day.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but the front rooms look over the water.

Web stayed for three nights after a search for an Edinburgh Hotel through Avios, the new name for Airmiles, and used the hotel as a basis for various trips into town and Fife.
The area reminded us a lot of Cardiff Bay with lots of modern and arty developments in what must have been a slump - now full of smart offices, coffee shops, great pubs and restaurants and wine bars.
The hotel is in a historic building and with the best will in the world we could not find any signs outside to indicate it was the MalMaison Hotel. The interior is contemporary, smart, arty, quite dark, but also warm and welcoming, with a very inviting bar/restaurant area which on this occasion we sadly didn't use. The 3rd. floor room was warm, comfortable, clean and attractive and with good views, and nice products on the tea tray and the mini-bar. Breakfast wasn't included in the room rate and seemed far too expensive so we opted for having breakfast elsewhere. The reception staff was friendly, welcoming and professional.
Not having made use of all the hotel's facilities there is little more I can add, but we will certainly return to the MalMaison if we ever get back to Edinburgh.

I stayed here on a DBB package for my husbands birthday. We had a superior double room which was really lovely and spacious. The shower was particularly good. The hotel is quite dark and atmospheric which we both loved. The building and setting are both stunning with plenty of lovely restaurants and bars nearby. The staff were really friendly and accommodating. The food was good - I would've said really good but I didn't enjoy my main (stay clear of the mushroom crepes - bland and swimming in grease). The DBB set menu was a poor selection which basically forced you into ordering from the a la carte menu. If you wanted to choose from the a la carte menu then the DBB rate converts into £19.95 per head discount which does not go very far against the restaurant prices. Overall a great stay, wouldv'e been five stars if the food and DBB package was better.

We had 2 nights at the malmaison Edinburgh for the knock down, bargain basement price of £79.00!
The hotel it very nice from the outside and is very nicely presented at reception. It's an old building so the lift was a little slow. The Hotel is decorated very dark but well lit so you're not stumbling about.
Our room was at the rear of the hotel and was a good size and nicely decorated. Bathroom was very nice with a full size bath and very good shower over the bath. Room had French doors with a Juliet balcony.
We ate in the hotel restaurant on our first night where we received a 50% discount off our food from a voucher given to us at check in. Food was very good, and service was also good.
We paid to have breakfast in the hotel and they offer a continental alongside a decent breakfast menu offering kippers, toasted muffins and a cooked breakfast amongst others.
Hotel also has free wifi and free parking which is rare and very welcome.
Would definitely recommend and old most definitely return.

My husband and I stayed there for his 60th birthday in November 2012. The staff were friendly and helpful . Dinner was delicious and at the end the waiter brought him a plate with Happy Birthday written in chocolate! Continental breakfast was plentiful and cooked breakfast was freshly made. We had a superior double room at the front of the hotel and the view over the water was lovely. Our only complaint was that the bedroom was a bit dark. There was no centre light, only a standard lamp and two bedside lamps. There was a well-stocked mini bar and nibbles. We would certainly stay there again as the hotel has a free car park and you could also park on the road at the side of the hotel. It was also only a short walk from the Oceam Terminal Shopping Centre and the Royal Yacht Britannia. Hopefully the weather will be better the next time!

We take advantage of the Malmaison Sunday Stopover offer. You pay £10 for your accommodation but then have to spend £75 in the bar of restaurant, making the total price for two people £85 for dinner and bed. This was an excellent deal but whilst the rooms etc were still brilliant we found the restaurant more expensive this time. The price of the steaks, which used to be from Donald Russell, have gone up and all you get with them is half a tomato, no hand cut chips like you used to. In the past you could easily get your dinners and a drink each for the £75 but hard pushed to do that now.

Still worthwhile a visit but watch the price of your meal because there is then a 'discretionary' 10% tip, which is automatically added to your bill and if you dont want to pay it you have to ask for it to be removed!

Lots of excellent restaurants are bars nearby

Room Tip: Rooms to the left, accessed via the reception, are the best

I booked this hotel for my partners Birthday and we stayed in early Dec 2012.
The hotel is in the Leith area which is about 15 mins from the centre of Edinburgh by cab (approx cost each way £8-£10) we also used the local bus service which was good value at approx £1.40 each way or £3.5 for a day pass. A word of advice the buses don't give change so best to have the correct fare.
A bonus with staying a little out of the centre was the free parking that came with the hotel.
The hotel itself is in a gorgeous old building, we were lucky enough to have a room which looked out over the front of the hotel. Our room was lovely absolutely no complaints and the bed was really comfortable.
After a lovely day in Edinburgh which is packed with things to do and see we headed back to the hotel for dinner, the menu had a good choice and the food was delicious but the memorable thing about the restaurant has to be the staff they are friendly, efficient and happy. The manager was there when we left at about 11 and was back the following morning to oversea breakfast, still smiling.Breakfast was included in the room rate and there was plenty of choice from cereal, croissants to the full English and considering how busy it was the staff handled every thing really efficiently.
Check out was the only slight down on the weekend as the receptionist charged for the breakfast however as soon as I pointed out her error she rectified the problem, just may be worth checking the bill as it's easy to rush through checkout.
Edinburgh its self is a stunning city and one I would return too at the drop of a hat.We saw loads in the short time we were there too much to mention.

Room Tip: Ask for a view over the front of the hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
