“Take a Torch . .”
Reviewed 27 March 2013

We stayed at Malmaison Leith (Edinburgh) on a freezing weekend in March. Like most 'Mals' it is housed in a fabulous old building near the waterfront in an area that has been regenerated. There are plenty of nice pubs and restaurants close by (try The Shore, see separate review) and Edinburgh City Centre is only about a mile away. We were on a 'Mal' deal which gave us Bed, Breakfast and Evening Meal plus a bottle of wine for £99. Can't complain about that! The evening meal was from a fixed menu or you could choose to eat from the a la carte with an allowance. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The 'Mal' breakfasts are always superb with great choices of fresh fruit, juices and cereals plus plenty of choice from the cooked breakfast menu.
We upgraded on arrival and had a large suite with a comfortable four-poster. The bathroom was clean and bright with a good selection of toiletries.
One minor point - if you are a reader or just like to see what you are doing . . take a torch!
Everywhere, bedrooms and public rooms alike have very subdued lighting, vert romantic but no good if you want to read the paper :-)

Up in the city for a Wine Tasting event and chose The Malmaison Hotel for our accommodation through the Web.Found The location a bit awkward at Leith Dock not as described ie it is more than Five minutes from the hub of Edinburgh!Apart from that The Hotel has an impressive look very modern and Stylish, warm and welcoming.Bar area had good Character and our Bedroom very Clean bright and modern.Facilities were good! Breakfast in the morning was First class.Plenty of choice well presented, Staff attentative, and food Taste The BEST!Would highly recommend for a short stay and would definitely try Malmaison in other cities.

Room Tip: would have liked a front facing room but realise this could have an additional charge.

Stayed for a 2 night break including dinner on 1st night - we had a brilliant time and the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The food was delicious and it was so nice having your hot breakfast served instead of a buffet. The whole atmosphere was great. The room was very spacious and great facilities. Was also good being able to get the bus right into the centre of Edinburgh. No 22 from Ocean Terminal for £3.50 day ticket - great value. No worries about finding a parking space and much cheaper too.

Room Tip: We faced towards the side of the building - no faults with that at all.

The Malmaison group properties are getting a bit worn in some respects; but the Edinburgh hotel is still smart, contemporary and with a certain edge. Leith dock is a great location – water, character and ambience. The hotel itself warm, welcoming and as richly decorated and comforting as they all are.

My room faced nothing nice just another building – but this didn’t really matter; it was spacious, well furnished – with easy chairs, desk, cupboards and a well stocked mini bar. I had an en-suite bathroom with a good shower in the bath itself. Good accoutrement in the bathroom including loads of shower gel, body stuff and the rest. Lovely soap! Warm towels replaced each day if you want.

Reception staff were helpful and kind; the restaurant open late, with attentive staff and the food even at 10.30pm , freshly cooked, hot and appealing. Breakfast in Malmaisons are a relaxed affair with full English, cereals, juice, coffees, croissant and much more.

This hotel has free wi-fi (other hotels should take note).

It is not a five star experience – it lacks the staff numbers, the customer edge and (thankfully) the price; but this hotel has bucket loads of character and is comfortable, enjoyable space in a great city.

Room Tip: Ask for a front facing room.

The hotel is well located down by the shore in Leith . You can catch a bus just outside the hotel to Edinburgh city centre which takes about a 1/2 hour (buses every 10 minutes).

The hotel is modern, trendy and stylish. I have eaten in the brasserie a couple of times. The food is always great with very good service.

Our room was surprisingly a little disappointing. Very small, a little bit tired looking with terrible view an outside wall . I have stayed in many Malmaison hotels and felt this was not up to the standard I would expect. The room was spotlessly clean though. The toiletries are a lovely touch and the shower was brilliant.

The staff were all lovely. Very helpful, welcoming and friendly.

The breakfast was of a very high standard which a great choice.

I would stay at the hotel again although only if I was able to book a room for a better price or a dinner, bed breakfast deal. I felt it was a little overpriced for the standard of room.

We came here with such high hopes, yet when we got here we were disappointed. The reception staff were rude and uninterested.
The rooms are average, for the price you would expect slightly more luxury, especially as the 'wifi' is actually a cable in the wall.
When we got here they told us we HAD to swipe our credit card to make sure we pay for extras, and when we refused they came up to our rooms 5 minutes after we checked in, and took everything out of the mini-bar, a process which took ten minutes and was invasive, especially as we hadn't even sat down.
The advertisement for the food is horrible, with a picture of a large man and the headline 'Man Explodes In Malmaison. Not something I wish to see on my bed when checking into my room.

There is one huge positive which I feel I need to stress: The Barman was beyond lovely. He was a real lifesaver of this place. He was kind, recommended wines (which weren't the most expensive) and made us feel at home.
In all, I wont be staying here ever again, as I feel you can get better comfort from a nice B&B for half the price.

Had a lovely stay at this hotel. Booked the dinner, bed and breakfast (superior room) for our anniversary and thought it was value for money. The room was spacious and well appointed and had a mini bar, hospitality tray, ironing board, iron and hairdryer etc. The room was freezing and didn't seem to heat up at all and the bathroom floor was also stone cold. Dinner was lovely and what you would expect of Malmaison but my only gripe is the tables are too close together and our dinner wasn't very intimate. If you have the dinner package, you get a set menu but can redeem 40 pounds against the al a carte menu. We decided to do this but as there is a 10% service charge, the bill was calculated before the 40 pounds was taken off. Not worth arguing over 4 pounds but seems a bit sneaky to me. The hotel has free parking which is a big bonus and a special mention to the staff whose service was outstanding.

Room Tip: Ask for a heater!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
