Reviewed 30 December 2013 via mobile

We have just spent two lovely nights here again. Hotel is super and staff so nice and friendly. We had dinner first night and the steak was perfect. Some great shopping! Visited the ocean terminal and went to pictures. Lovely restaurants around leith. Will definitely stay here once again. Thank you and Happy New Year to all at malmaison.

Usually love this brand but on arrival today thought we were checking in to a dog hotel, four different medium and large dogs up and down main stairwell.. All well behaved it has to be said with responsible owners but I am not a dog or cat lover sorry and if we choose to stay at this type of hotel I do not expect the bedrooms to have housed pets On check in the receptionist confirmed cats and dogs all welcome for an extra £10 per night when I commented upon the dogs in the foyer. Heart sink. The room we had was lovely, and clean as always, no obvious signs of pets but can tell by allergy symptoms. I can understand the attraction for dog and cat owners, it must be great having the option to bring your lovely pet with you but for those of us who are allergic it isn't so pleasant. If we had known this before booking we would have looked elsewhere. CAnt imagine the extra revenue for the hotel will make up for potential lost business. Hoping we are not woken up with barking! Evening meal disappointing, a couple of nice things, otherwise thoroughly average. Other guests looked disappointed with their food too. Staff all lovely and everything else good.

Room Tip: Some rooms look very small, try to upgrade

We stayed here for 2 nights for a very short stopover in Edinburgh. The hotel is around 8-10 pounds from the city centre by taxi. The hotel is old and magnificent. The decor of the rooms was lovely and our room was very spacious. The first room we were in had a loud ongoing exhaust fan that wouldn't switch off and when we mentioned it to the staff it was quickly checked and then we were moved to a different room. The staff were so friendly and helpful.
We had both breakfast and dinner in the brasserie and the food and service was excellent. Although this hotel and its services is quite pricey, it is value for money as it is of high standard. We really enjoyed our stay.

A couple of glitches when I checked in but these were smoothed out by a sensible manager.
The room and bathroom were was spotlessly clean and well appointed.
Restaurant and bar were I feel overpriced, but the food was generally good. I stayed for 9 nights over a two week period so had chance to to really 'feel' the hotel. The staff were excellent and helpful.
I have to agree with another review reference the bed. It was simply too hard and reminded me of Korea where they seem to relish sleeping on hard as nails mattresses.
Also I must confess I don,t understand the £25 withhold from my card taken on arrival (to cover I was told minibar etc).
The premises has your card details so why bother to irritate.

Staff 9/10
Location 10/10
Room 7/10
Bar 7/10
Restaurant 5/10
Bed 2/10

Trading on reputation. All a bit tired. Needs a revamp. Tatty round the edges.
Stayed in one of the luxury rooms on DB&B deal.
Room big but bed was simply one of the worst I have ever slept in. Hard as nails. Floor would have been better. Bathroom needs some TLC. Holes in wall and paint of wash stand area.
Staff very attentive.
Restaurant food not very good at all. Nouvelle cuisine is alive and kicking in the Mal Edinburgh. Portion control is incredible. Not much wrong with flavours but a stuffed turkey roll joint and one piece and a chipolatta does not constitute a festive turkey dinner.
Sorry not really up to the mark for £29.95.
Better available in Edinburgh for similar money.

Room Tip: Don't take one overlooking the front. That's the smoking area and so it's noisy at night...

This hotel may be a little way from the centre of Edinburgh but it is well worth a visit. No problems with parking unlike the city centre hotels. The room I stayed in was very comfortable and clean with everything you could wish for even a nespresso machine! The breakfast was fantastic. Lovely location beside the port with lots of different restaurants nearby.

Excellent hotel in a great location. No problems with parking, unlike staying in the city centre, and only £1.50 on the bus into the centre of Edinburgh.

The bar and bar staff were fantastic. The great selection of drinks were very reasonably priced and service came frequently and with a smile.

I was a little disappointed with my steak from the restaurant, but, I've had a lot worse and I wouldn't let this put me off trying again. The service was, again, unbeatable.

Room Tip: Worth a little extra to upgrade your room. Make sure to try a cocktail in the bar.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
