We visited Malmaison Leith on sunny Monday for a couple of beers and a light lunch al fresco.

Full marks for having outdoor seating available unlike many places. Full marks for presentation and good food. A trio of mini-burgers and a shrimp club.

Waiter was very charming and the service was good ........ UNTIL other tables started to fill up and being on his own, he was unable to cope. Sadly the service then deteriorated to very poor and slow. This culminated in a 10-15 minute wait for the bill which we eventually had to go inside for.

Restaurants please realise that when people want to go, they want to go. Keeping them waiting for the bill achieves nothing; they aren't going to order more drinks nor food nor coffee, they are occupying a table which fresh customers could use and it leaves a frustrated taste in the mouth, no matter how delicious the food had been prior.

We don't mind paying premium prices in a self-styled premium establishment but the service must be premium-plus to satisfy us.

"Does the bill include a service charge?"
"No, Sir."
"Good."

Beautiful sunny Monday and met a friend here for a beer and lunch alfresco. Nicely sheltered from Leith's winds but maintains superb views. Food was beautifully presented and tasty. Waiter was charming. But as a few more people arrived the service became extremely slow. The loan waiter was unable to cope. This understaffing took the gilt off the gingerbread for us and spoiled what was otherwise a very pleasant late lunch. When we wanted to go, we asked for the bill. It didn't arrive within 15 minutes we and had to go inside and seek someone out to settle up. Annoying: When you want to leave, you want to leave not hang around.

Also, we were slightly surprised to be told that beer was only served as half pints or schooners. (2/3 pint). Pints not available. Why not??

I am NOT criticising the waiter. He was very good but couldn't cope on his own. Had there been an adequate level of staffing, I would have given five stars but lack of service is not acceptable in a premium establishment, charging premium prices. Management need to address this issue.

The hotel was great, staff, food and all wer excellent. The hotel is a little dark throughout but this is the design theme. The gym is old and needs some new equipment. All in all a great weekend and recommend.

We booked this hotel based on the positive reviews from and we weren't disappointed. Don't have any hesitations in booking this lovely hotel. We normally stay near the main shopping centre ie princess street, but this time fancied somewhere a little bit on the outskirts. From the minute we walked through the door, the staff were all helpful and polite, checking was quick. The room was exceptionally clean and decor spot on. The toiletries were lovely, would last anyone for a week, that's how big they were. The continental breakfast was delicious. Rather than pay £10 taxi fare one way, we hopped on the bus either 16 or 22 which takes around 20 minutes to get to Princess Street and if you get a day ticket for £3.50 your saving loads of money. Must go see The Royal Yacht Britannia, 8 minutes walk away, thoroughly enjoyed experience and was well worth the money. We are now planning on returning with the children.

I stayed here for one night on business with colleagues. The hotel is well located if you're visiting the Scottish Govt. building on Victoria Quay. The room was very comfortable and spacious. It is obviously converted old town houses and so has character. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was great, I had the eggs Benedict. The orange juice was the genuine article. My only gripe is the prices in the bar - a g+t was fairly expensive. No surprise the bar was so quiet. Overall though I'd go back to this hotel if I visit Edinburgh again.

As our most recent stay was not as good as previous.
The hotel is a fine looking building in a quiet spot in Leith.
It is ideally placed should you want to shop at Ocean Terminal, walk along the Water of Leith, have a culinary feast on your doorstep (great cafes, bistros, pubs, including giants such as the Plumed Horse and the Michelin starred Martin Wishart and The Kitchin) and is only a short trip by a no.22 bus to Princes Street. The hotel also has free car parking and free wifi which is a real bonus.
But as the hotel is old, you can have squeaky floor boards, draughty windows and cool spots in the bedroom or bathroom (as we found). Our room was very spacious though and whilst not with a premium view, it was good for what we wanted.
Our trip was not as good as previous as I found the breakfast standards slipping (no alternatives for full fat butter or milk) and the continental breakfast choice was limited. I was also not going to pay £13.95 for one of the cooked oferings at breakfast. We did have a great lunch at the cafe bar but again the shine was taken off by paying £38 for one shrimp club sandwich, one burger & chips and two beers (both 2/3rd's of a pint). I think the Mal should realise that the restaurant and bar may be quiet due to these high prices. As I note, there is a lot of competition in the area.
I have given the hotel a 4 star rating though as it can and could do better and the seating area at the front of the hotel is a great place to sit/chill/ get a suntan in better weather.

Room Tip: Be specific about what you want so that you are not disappointed. Whilst you expect to probably have...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
