“Worst Premium hotel ever - Avoid - Run down and Poor service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2010

The carpets are dirty, the widows are filthy, the headboard is stained, the TV is grubby, the free soaps/washes smell crap.

The worst breakfast I've ever had....avoid this hotel at all costs!

The Malmaison is really a nice place to stay. Not only is it so much different from all these 'standard' hotel mammoths, such as Holiday Inn or Ramada, but they spend a lot of attention to those 'small details', such as nice toiletries, a unique-in-its-kind branding,...
The rooms are 'design', although it must be said that slight ageing is commencing...
The restaurant is OK, and they have a specific menu with local specialties. The breakfast is also OK. I must however say that in the many years I'm visiting the Mal in Edinburgh, the diner and breakfast menu cards didn't change even a bit. It would be nice to at least have some of the meals changed, certainly if you're aiming at business travelers.
But anyway, this hotel is largely advizable for anyone visiting Edinburgh, be it for business or pleasure. The location is nice: the trendy Leith area. The staff is very helpful and friendly.

On arrival to the hotel we were greated at the door by a very smart gentleman who helped us with our bags and directed us to the reception. The girl checking us in was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. One tip is that you can pre-book breakfast on arrival and only pay £10 per person. We were offered an upgrade also on arrival, but we declined as we were on quite a tight budget.

On arrival in our room, we were very impressed. Very bright and clean with a great bed. Nice furnishings and great bathroom and shower. My only small gripe is that the room had an old boxy type tv, but it did work perfectly and there were over 12 channels including sky sports.

We did not eat in the restaurant, but the menu looked fantastic. We opted to have a drink in the bar and again the service was perfect. The young barman was very attentive and gave us great advise. He also recommended and made us delicious cocktails.

This hotel is slightly outside the city center. We took a bus (the number 22) which stops very near the hotel. It takes just over 10 minutes. I would say however that location is actually a plus. The city center is very busy and noisy, but the Malmaison is in a tranquil setting on the waterfront. It was great waking up and watching swans landing in the water. The hotel does have a very nice outside terrace area, but the weather was not too good when we visited, but I can imagine on a sunny day it would be very nice.

This is the third uk hotel I have stayed in this year and I would definetely say it was the best. We will stay there again if we are back in Edinburgh.

Visited the Malmaison in Edinburgh for Valentine's Day weekend and for a gig in the centre of the city. Got an amazing deal as I pre-booked through an online agent (rang the hotel directly to check if it was genuine as it was that much of a bargain). It is a really charming hotel. Our room had a lovely bathtub and the free toiletries which in other hotels can sometimes be a bit rubbish were really substantial and smelt lovely!! There is also a dvd player in all the Malmaison hotel rooms so after a long day sightseeing and shopping it was nice to come back and watch a film in a warm, comfortable room. We bought some CDs and listened to them while reading the Sunday paper (which was free). It is worth noting that the Malmaison chain do some of the most delicious food too -- if you plan it properly and get up nice and early you could easily have a three course breakfast as the selection is incredible... I had some Eggs Benedict that would give Delia a run for her money :-) The only negative things I can say are that unless you book dinner on arrival you'll probably struggle to get into the hotel restaurant in the evening and that you do have to get a bus into the centre (or a taxi if you're slightly more affluent). It is possible to walk to the centre in about 30/40 minutes but the bus ride is much, much quicker and really frequent. Hope this helps!!

Somewhat shocked to read these poor reviews. We booked a one night break for £60 for 2 of us Bed and Breakfast

I did call and request a bigger front room and was advised that these were charged at a supplement but that they would reserve a high floor. On arrival we were allocated to a lovely front room with a view of the port

We caught the bus from outside Waverley station which took 15 minutes and cost about £1. Bus stop 2 mins from Hotel. it is the old seaman's mission so a beautiful hotel with a friendly bar and bistro on the ground floor

Bathroom was great with lots of toiletries although the noisy aircon was a bit annoying. There was even a proper hairdryer

We dined at a nearby Michelin starred reatuarant in some style as a treat. It's a mixed area, still a working port but getting a bit trendy

Bed was very big and comfortable. Breakfast was superb, fresh juices, platters of fresh fruite, croissants and excellent coffee ( and we are very picky with coffee ) Could have sat there all morning.

Reception explained how we could walk up Leith Water ( the river) to the Botanical Gardens which were wonderful - took about half an hour

A great hotel and unbelivable value for money. Push for a big room though as the ones on the other side were a bit poky with no view

I took my wife to Edinburgh for a surprise 40th Birthday treat and we stayed at the Malmaison hotel. The staff were brilliant organising an upgrade to a suite for her birthday, and providing us with all the help and assistance we needed. The suite was lovely and spacious and looked out over the old dock yard which was a lovely surprise.
The hotel is about a couple of miles from Princes' Street in the centre of Edinburgh, and easily walkable in 40 mins (though the area you walk through is probably best avoided at night)..hence we took a taxi. To save loads of money, get a number 22 bus back from Princes Street to literally 50 yards outside the hotel....all for £1.20!!!!

I booked the World Cup Widows Offer which cost £130, based on two sharing. The package should have included accommodation and continental breakfast, 2 course dinner, a cocktail and wine from the 3 Tenners menu. You should also have got nibbles and chocolate and a selection of DVDs for the room. First of all we were allocated a room with no dvd player, I pointed this out before we went for dinner and reception said they would talk to the duty manager. We went for dinner and I can honestly say it is the worst dinner I have had for a long time!! obviously no time was taken over the menu, preparation and presentation. there was no garnish and the food was very standard inadequate, this to my standard did not reflect the mal brand! my mother had the hake, the small portion was presented with sauteed onions and that was it - no vegetables or potato available, which was very poor, would have been better off with the omlette. I would rather have had one good main course than 2 sub standard courses. I got offered to be allocated another room after 10pm at night, no help was offered with the move but at night we felt it was too late, because by then we decided to go out instead. When we got back we did not receive any chocolate or nibbles for the room. The staff did apologise, but did not seem to be bothered that we did not receive the full package. I stayed on a Sunday night and would have been better on a room only deal or bed and breakfast. There is an offer on a Sunday - if you spend £75 on food and beverage you can stay for £10 extra, at least we could have had a better meal, rather than paying £130 for a terrible dinner and nothing else promised. An utter waste of money and did not enjoy, don't do it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
