If you've read Ian Rankin's Rebus books you'll know what to expect from the Oxford Bar.

It's a fairly small, normal, local pub. Decent pint and exactly as you expect it to be. Nice to see it's not been glammed up to be something fancy or tacky.

Not until we'd been there did we find out that it was the most popular of the Rankin bars but has not altered it's 'atmosphere' to cash-in on the fact so seemed very authentic to me ie an excellent old style genuine 'local'.

Went into The Ox for a drink and it is exactly as Ian Rankin described it. Definitely worth a visit for all Rebus fan.

Ok, so it's mentioned frequently in the Rebus novels, but there's otherwise nothing really to commend this place.
Dreary decor and slow, grudging, unfriendly service are the order of the day in here.
It's a shame as this place has the potential to be a great, cosy little pub, but manages to fall way short of the mark.
No complaints about the quality and variety of the beer.

Excellent small bar just near Charlotte Square in Edinburgh. Make the effort to find it, particularly if you are an Ian Rankin/Rebus fan. This is the bar mentioned regularly in the Rebus novels and Ian Rankin the author lives nearby and frequents the Ox. You may possibly see him at the bar. Also for the Australian tourists who like their beer cooler than most UK residents - the pints at the Ox were the coldest I had in England or Scotland!!
