It is quite an easy access to the hill, just follow the Royal mile till the end, it is very easy to walk there, it is also close the the bus station. The view is beautiful, you can see the new and the old city from the top, get some panorama pictures. Definitely worth a visit

As other users said its quick alternative for arthers seat. Its little tricky to find steps which takes you to hill but just follow the mounments seen on the hill from pricnesses street and eventually you will see steps.
Few view points from top, i went in morning but i feel anytime of the day should be good to have views in different directions.
Good photo opportunities on top

Calton Hill is a lovely small hill with Nelsons Monument, The National Monument, an Art Gallery and a lovely little café at the top! We climbed to the top of Nelsons Monument, approx. 144 steps, wonderful views! Visitors guides are handed out freely, photographic information is situated all around the top of the column. There are some lovely walks signposted around the hill and information plaques explaining the volcanic strata of the surrounding areas, plenty of picnicking areas. Not to be missed!

Visited June 2012. It was a short walk from Grassmarket where I stayed. The monument was kidnapped by a large group of loud students from a European country. Their very loud teacher made them sign&dance Macarena more than once. I didn't climb the tower, Nelson Monument.

I enjoyed the views from Salisbury Crags better. It was less crowded too.
