“Nonna would be proud.”
Reviewed 15 August 2013

4 of us went to Nonnas on a Wednesday evening and were fortunate to have booked because by 8pm it was full. The list of specials was almost as large and varied as the printed menu which proved to be a challenge for the waiter as he recited it without a prompt. All 4 starters and main courses were a delight - superbly tasty and, particularly the mains, of generous proportions. This restaurant is proof that not all the good eating places are in the centre of the city, and a 10 minute taxi-ride from Princes Street will take you to this delightful establishment.

“AN OUT OF THE WAY GEM”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

This may now be my favorite Italian restaurant. Happened upon Nonna's after seeing a Fringe show nearby. Service was wonderful, attentive but not intrusive, more than enough staff. The servers were friendly, knowledgeable. The place was immaculate, including the ladies room. Had the ravioli la ortolano. Superb!! Husband had pumpkin ravioli, usually his favorite, but he couldn't help sampling mine - several times. Portions were ample and the raspberry iced dessert (can't remember the name) was delicious.

Tried to return a few nights later, but the place was booked solid all night. Call ahead for a reservation. Would definitely return if I am ever in Edinburgh again.

“One of the best Italian restaurants in Edinburgh”
Reviewed 1 August 2013

Nonna's kitchen is one of my very favourites. I love italian food, and here they do it well. I have been many times and every time I've been impressed. The welcome you receive settles you down for whatever dining experience you are there for. I have been there for all types of occasions: birthdays, graduations and impromptu dinners/lunches. The staff are great and Jimmy always cheers me up with his recital of the specials menu, which he memorises ! The food is great, the menu is well rounded and the daily specials board is fantastic with lots of fresh fish to choose from. If you love pasta then try the fresh pumpkin ravioli or the prawn linguine, the prawns can be tricky to de-shell but the staff are always keen to help if you wish. My favourites would be the antipasto and the veal saltimbocca. The antipasto has a nice amount of different things: cured meats, cheeses and nice pickled pieces to balance your palate. The saltimbocca is just great; tender veal with sweet prosciutto and side of vegetables to mop up all the sauce !! One of the best I've had! The previous negative review of this dish is what compelled me to write this review.
In my opinion, Nonna's kitchen is a great family run restaurant, with great food, great atmosphere and great value for money.

“It started good but went downhill with the main course”
Reviewed 23 July 2013

We went to this restaurant because it was the only place close to our accomondation that took us in without a reservation.
We started with some italian beer and a garlic-rosemary focaccia to share. The focaccia was excellent but it went downhill afterwards.

I had the veal saltimbocca which was poorly executed: Saltimbocca builds on the combination of the subtle aromas of veal, parma ham, sage and white wine. This wasn't possible here: The whole dish was drowned in a creamy sauce that basically covered all other aromas that might have been there. The accompanying seasonal vegetables were also a letdown...tasteless brititsh style instead of aromatic italian style
My mother had grilled fish that wan't actually grilled but rather fried and tasted very bland.
