Owner description: Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

We were shown around by a gentleman called Chris T and I must say his humour, style and passion for the tour was first class. The tour was great, if a tad expensive, but overall well worth doing and something you surely have to do when in town! Don't be expecting a fully fledged underground town though, as that's a bit of a myth.

Very informative if scripted tour, the particular attraction for us was the real historic angle rather than the sensational (i.e. there weren't lots of people dressed up jumping out trying to scare us with ghost tales). Our guide, Lloyd, did a great job of delivering, with added humour along the way. Felt the group size was a little too large in some of the smaller spaces, and there were evidently so many other routes and areas that could be explored...probably worth going for the longer 'gold' experience to get a real feel of the close. Would definitely recommend a visit, amazing to think of all that beneath the pavements!

Interesting place but groups were large for size of rooms. Guide was American but put on a very strange Scottish accent. It felt very rushed and at £12.95 Each was not cheap as it was only about 45mins. Too much staged stuff.

We visited on 19th January 2014. Overpriced experience when compared to what could be seen. We believe the guide did his best, however only few dark rooms could be explored with a help of guide's torch. Most of interiors we could see were not original, they were renovated because of safety reasons. The most interesting was Mary King's close, but, again, we only spent there few minutes before coming back to the shop.
That's the shame the visitors are not permitted to take the pictures (we were told this is because this is a Edinburgh City Council property and business) and are offered a photo for 6 pounds.

Thank you for sharing your experience, we are pleased to hear you found Mary King's Close interesting. The majority of the rooms which guests experience are original and displayed in the condition they were rediscovered, with the addition of appropriate set dressing items to help visitors understand the conditions of old Edinburgh.
