The Old Waverley Hotel
Ranked #108 of 151 Hotels in Edinburgh
Reviewed 6 December 2011

We booked a Superbreak by train for two nights and stopped at the Old Waverley Hotel.
The reception were very helpful allowing us to leave our luggage in a secure location until booking in time arrived which left us free to look around the city centre.
Our room was on the first floor with a view of Jenners and the Sct monument from the window
The room itself was quite small with two chairs and a table but no drawers in which to put your clothes ,ther was a good size built in wardrobe but again no shelf to put anything on.
The bathroom was very clean and looked a fairly recent update with enough room to move around but not big.
The bedroom part of the room was tired and the heater on the wall had black marks from the heaer rising fan shaped above it which were not new and had been cleaned in the past but not recently and needed the wall painting to remove them .
The curtains had a vallance at the top which hung in waves these were very dusty and needed a good hoover to remove the dust.
The paint work on the window was ready for doing.
The bed had two dips in it on either side and went BOING when you moved in the night this was probably the worst matress We have ever slept on.
On a bright note the breakfast was very good with an excellent choice which was replenished as required.
We mentioned the room when we were leaving and the young lady said they were in the process of doing up the rooms as they could.
I would suggest that the management tried the matresses etc. themselves on a regular basis and upgraded the rooms on how people who use them judge them.
This was not a cheap two day break nor was it expensive but we feel that the room we had was at best budget and will think carefully before booking another.
I know the management read these reports from previous comments and we did not ask for any reduction in cost nor do we seek one I am writing this as a totally unbiased user would

Room Tip: From reading other reports the higher up you are the better the room.

The Hotel is very well situated, next to Waverly station from where starts City Tours Buses or Airlink Buses from/to airport. The reception staff was prompt and helpfull. We had 2 rooms facing Princess Street, rooms were clean and comfortable, with a generous LCD and well heated. The bathroom was clean. The breakfast was very good and they offered also dinner. We visited Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace and Britania Yacht. We enjoyed very much the festive atmosphere.

Room Tip: Rooms with Princess Street view

I was not disappointed whilst staying at The Old Waverley. It's location is fantastic - a short walk from Waverley Station and directly across from Princes Street Gardens (we spent a lovely afternoon strolling round the German Christmas Market). As their website states, their reception is on the first floor which is up a few stairs. Their is a lift thereafter to the other floors. The decor is nice and welcoming and the hotel had their Christmas decorations up when we were there (1st Dec). Check in was straightforward and we were given a room on the top floor with views out over Princes Street Gardens which meant we had a great view of the Christmas lights and activites. We had booked a family room and it did not disappoint. A huge double bed and also a single bed were provided. I only have a few criticisms with the room with the first being the pillows as they seemed to be half the size of "normal" pillows. The second is that there was only one hand towel provided which for a family room, I felt, could have done with more. Finally, the sink basin in the bathroom was quite high and sunk into the surface. I'm 5ft 3 and struggled to reach to get my hands properly in the sink therefore for families with young children, I think they would really struggle to use the sink. All in all, the room was comfortable and met our needs for the night we were there. The Abbotsford Bar was really busy whilst we were there but we did have a drink at the bar before heading out and also on our return. Many people have commented on the smell from the Lush soap shop below, however, we were unfortunate to have a stench of B.O from a guest so for us, the soap smell was much welcomed!!! (and both scents are outwith the hotels control!!!) I had pre-booked breakfast and there was a good range of cereals, juices and hot food. Checking out was as straightforward as checking in and the hotel has an ample area to leave luggage. This was great for us as we had a wander around the Princes Street shops before heading for our train home.

Room Tip: If you want a view of Princes Street then make sure you ask for it! It's also worth pre-booking...

We stayed in a triple room at the back of the hotel. The room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The reception staff were friendly. The buffet breakfast was good. The location was the highlight of this stay, situated on Princes street overlooking the winter fesival, Edinburgh was looking beautiful and magical. Would love to return!

Room Tip: I wish I had asked for a room at the front as the view would have been wonderful.

My husband and i stayed here for one night earlier this week. It was a birthday treat for him and opportunity to see the festive lights and Chritmas market. When we checked in they had no record of our booking which had beeen made several weeks previously. Fortunately I had all paperwork with me. They allocated us a room overlooking Princes Street as I had requested but special requests were ignored and no apology was offered. The room on the 4th floor was clean and had a modern bathroom. However, windows are not doubleglazed and the noise from the Christmas fair opposite was very loud. This stopped at 10p.m. and it was quiet at night. It was very windy while we were there and the wind howled through the gaps in the windows. Fortunately there were very thick curtains. We did not have dinner in the hotel but breakfast was adequate though strangely in Scotland no porridge on offer. The hotel is in a very central position and we were able to walk easily to most places. Do have a walk along George Street and visit The Dome which is a fabulous building with the most wonderful Christmas decorations inside and out. We had morning coffee here, last year we had lunch in the domed room. A bit pricey but a wonderful experience. The second day it rained heavily so we got the bus (no. 22 from outside Disney shop) to the Royal Yacht. this is a wonderful attraction and well worth the trip. The waverley suited our purpose nicely.

Room Tip: Front rooms can be noisy.

Having to stay over in Edinburgh on two consecutive Fridays while undergoing eye surgery, I booked the Old Waverley Hotel for its central location, just across the road from Edinburgh Waverley station and two doors down from the eye clinic.

Reception, bar and waiting staff were all pleasant and helpful and reception area bar and restaurant were also, with views up to the castle.

The bedroom was clean and tidy with flat screen tv and coffee making facilities. The bathroom/shower were modern design.

Unfortunatley the single beds we had were quite uncomfortable on the first visit (rm110)
slightly better on the second visit (rm 310)

Not being double glazed we encounted quite a bit street noise especially on our first visit when there was a succession of stag parties up and down the street into the early morning.
On our second visit there was a Christmas fair right opposite the hotel which wasnt too bad as it was all over with by 10pm but non the less noisey until then.

On the whole our stay was pleasant and the downside of the noise is of course a consequence of being so central so we cant have everything. I would still consider
staying here in the future.

Picked this hotel mainly from the tripadvisor reviews and its all been said before. Definitely the worst thing is the 'air freshener ' smell in the public areas mainly reception and Abbotsford bar this can be quite overpowering and after a while become a bit sickly, that said everything else was fine, clean room, friendly staff and good food reasonably priced in the Abbotsford bar. I can recommend the Waverley as good V.F.M. and we have already decided on a return trip-- hopefully without the smell.
