“Basic hotel”

Like most people I always review hotels before booking, so I was fully aware as to what to aspect. Great location a couple of minutes from the railway station and very near to all the attractions. the hotel is set in a Victorian building and still retains it lay out this probably explains the lack of ammoniates. Our room had no aircon which made for an uncomfortable first night. We asked for a fan which was supplied. It surprise me that they do not have these in the room, this would reduce the bad reviews. The bathroom was the best feature of the room, the bed was ok and the room was kept clean. We had breakfast during our stay and it really varied depending on when you came down to eat, the first day we found the food cold and the serving trays where half empty. the next day we hit it right and the food was hot. To be honest it was very basic and I would suggest having breakfast out. It really is a no frills hotel and you could do a lot better by shopping around.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with air con. eat out.

Stayed at the Old Waverley during 26th - 29th May and booked through lastminute.com.
Got to the hotel from airport by the airlink bus which is very cheap. The hotel is positioned on Princes Street in between shops so its easy to miss. To reach the reception, just through the corridor off the street and up the stairs. Quick and easy to check in and there is a small lift as well just past reception.
We had a double room, not so good on the view as I think it was the back of the hotel, but the third floor which was good because away from all the noise from being above Princes Street as other reviews had said. The room was very clean, good sized with a TV on the wall. Bathroom was very clean and good sized.
Could not fault the breakfast every morning as it was a buffet with sausages, hash browns, baked beans, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes and all that. And also juices and cereals.
Great location for this hotel, right in the centre on Princes Street, right opposite the Scott Monument (which is a good experience for £4 each and excellent views of Edinburgh. Very tight spaced as its only one way up and the same way back down.) About a ten minute walk to the castle which make sure to get there early as there will be queues!
We didn't eat at the hotel's restaurant as there are plenty around as well once found your surroundings.
When leaving the hotel the check out time is 11am but they can hold your luggage at the hotel.
Would recommend and probably stay here again for its central location.

The Old Waverley is in a superb position on Prince's Street with a view of the Old Town and Castle.... Unfortunately that is where the positives being to turn negative, although there was nothing specific to complain about it was just the combination. My room was on the 1st Floor and quite small with a side street view of what seemed to be a derelict building. Clean enough, but tired looking - apart from the bathroom which was absolutely fine, except I couldn't close the door. The bed was a little uncomfortable and I could feel the outlines of the springs in the mattress But it was the noise! Without air-conditioning the room was hot and so I opened the window to be greeted by the sound of city traffic and then at three in the morning a screaming drunken female and friends. I know this is not the hotel's fault, but please some air-conditioning would have solved the problem. Other positives - bar was okay and the barman very civil. Receptionists were fine too. Luckily was only a short trip and I survived. Maybe I was just unlucky with that particular room,

Room Tip: A room away from the front, unless it has air-con and double glazing

My family recently spent several days in Edinburgh (July 21-23) and we had booked two rooms, requesting adjoining rooms. We were pleased to have the request met, and both rooms were nice. One was quite a bit larger with a a sitting area, one smaller but adequate for two people. The view for the smaller on to Princes Street, and we loved the view of the Scott memorial, the park and the high mount of the old city.

It was warm for Scotland and neither room had A/C, but by our standards we were quite comfortable with windows open. The noise on Princes is a bit loud but, if you live in a large city, you expect that.
I know that for most people the heat was "extreme" but we live where the average temps in summer run high 80's and 90;s. Nuff said.

The steps up to the desk are a real problem if you have trouble with steps. You can leave your luggage in the entry and they will carry it up to reservation and to the elevator if you request it.

I agree the carpet needs to be replaced in the common area, but it didn't affect our stay.

The people were quite patient and kind while checking in, and were responsive to requests.

In the 21st century, I think it is a poor policy to charge for internet and that only one instrument can be connected at a time. The quality of signal was slow but worked for two of our three computers/phones.

My suggestion is to stop this silliness of charging, add a 2-3 pound charge across the board and adequately privide wi-fi to all areas in the hotel.

Our rooms were quite clean, but it's the small attentions to detail that make the rooms a cut below a top hotel. The room attendants were sweet, many from Eastern European countries. They have many rooms to attend. I'd suggest a routine thorough cleaning for each section of rooms once a month or as needed. Small repairs such as crack in walls from the picture holes just take away from a professional appearance.

The location, as noted is the best. No complaints at all.

Breakfast was priced a bit high for the quality. Canned fruit, vs fresh fruit in season was a bit silly. If I went again, I would not book breakfast included and would walk out in any direction for a better breakfast.

The Waverly is an older property. In general a good job is done trying to keep it a modern property with style and a sense of history.

I knew what I was booking when I booked it, the location is great, the rooms were more than adequate and the bath was up to date and clean.

We enjoyed our stay, but you must not expect a hotel in Scotland in one of the hottest years to have perfect room temperatures.

This hotel is in a perfect location in the heart of Edinburgh. We stayed in a double room with a large bed and a fantastic view of Edinburgh castle. There was no air con in the room and when I contacted reception to see if I could change rooms I was advised that the hotel was booked out for the saturday night, the british golf open was on. The next morning after breakfast we were shown a room with air con but was smaller and had no view. We decided to stay in our original room and left the windows open, we were not bothered with the noise. We found the staff very attentive and helpful. This is a listed building and hence has only one lift. The carpet on the stairs needs to be replaced and looks very shabby. Apart from that we found the hotel very comfortable with great character.

Very nice hotel with great location next to the train station and airport bus stop, just 20 min. from Edinburgh airport. Hotel is situeted directly on Princes Street, main shopping mall, few steps from Gallery and about 10 min from Royal Mile. Scotish breakfast and limited choice of drinks and coffees. Can suggest to all types of travellers - from leisure to business travellers. Scot´s Monument is directly opposite the hotel. Very good value for money.

Room Tip: Princes str. rooms have nice view on Edinburgh Castle

Great hotel in the centre of Edinburgh. Views from rooms that face Princes Street excellent - remember that it is a city centre though - that's not the hotels fault. Slightly challenging in a heatwave with no aircon but otherwise excellent. Food very good and staff were really helpful. Wine is reasonable..........
Carpets in stairways could do with some TLC.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with aircon!!! Remember that the location is in the middle of Edinburgh. If you boo...
