We arrived after a very long number of flights from Australia. There are many steps to get up into the hotel and no elevator. I went up to ask for help and a our bags were brought up to the reception. An eastern European receptionist was then very rude to us as we had arrived before the check in time and we were sent off while our bags were stored. After staggering around in the heat thoroughly jet lagged we went back at the allotted time. (3pm)

We were given a triple room on the first floor that was jammed with beds and a chair and table. The bathroom was good sized though. There are steps up to the elevator and my elderly mother and I were abandoned to negotiate our luggage up these steps and to our room.
It was very hot during our stay and there is no air conditioning and no fans in the rooms, portable or otherwise. This meant that windows had to be open in the hope of some air. This also meant no sleep as there were always very noisy streets below.

The breakfast was included in our package which was lucky because it was totally not worth paying for. Very limited and unappetising. Service at breakfast was terrible. One morning I heard an elderly group of ladies complain to the service staff that they could not get down to 0 (ground) on the elevator. They were told "there was nothing wrong with the elevator" and it was "their fault" and then dismissed totally. This despite the fact that we ourselves had problems numerous times too.

Checkout was just as appallingly difficult with our luggage, the elevator, the stairs and little to no help. We were glad to move on.

Room Tip: Away from the road. Ask for the back of the hotel.

I loved historic hotel. The location is absolutely perfect, with a view of the Old Town and Castle, on Princess Street, easily accessible from the Train station, not too far. The service was excellent, friendly staff, they answered a lot of our questions also. Superb Scotish breakfast, the best haggis I had was there, really good. You have to try that, really tasty.

The room was spacious and clean, with a superb view of the castle at night.
Central for just about everything, train station, grocery, shops, pubs, cafe, the park just over the road and the castle just a few minutes walk away. Bought my kilt at Hector Russel store, a very special moment for me, scarfs, etc..

This hotel's location is absolutely perfect, easily accessible from bus that leaves from the airport, and 5 minute walk to the Royal Mile.

The service was excellent-my friends and I asked a lot of questions regarding how to get from place to place, and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Our room had airconditioning, which was an absolute must for us, and it worked perfectly.

The room itself was beautiful, in keeping with the building's general atmospheric, old-timely feel (it's a really old building) but clean and with a very nice bathroom.

All in all, a very nice stay! Highly recommend if you want a different feel than staying in a chain hotel.

Like most people I always review hotels before booking, so I was fully aware as to what to aspect. Great location a couple of minutes from the railway station and very near to all the attractions. the hotel is set in a Victorian building and still retains it lay out this probably explains the lack of ammoniates. Our room had no aircon which made for an uncomfortable first night. We asked for a fan which was supplied. It surprise me that they do not have these in the room, this would reduce the bad reviews. The bathroom was the best feature of the room, the bed was ok and the room was kept clean. We had breakfast during our stay and it really varied depending on when you came down to eat, the first day we found the food cold and the serving trays where half empty. the next day we hit it right and the food was hot. To be honest it was very basic and I would suggest having breakfast out. It really is a no frills hotel and you could do a lot better by shopping around.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with air con. eat out.

Stayed at the Old Waverley during 26th - 29th May and booked through lastminute.com.
Got to the hotel from airport by the airlink bus which is very cheap. The hotel is positioned on Princes Street in between shops so its easy to miss. To reach the reception, just through the corridor off the street and up the stairs. Quick and easy to check in and there is a small lift as well just past reception.
We had a double room, not so good on the view as I think it was the back of the hotel, but the third floor which was good because away from all the noise from being above Princes Street as other reviews had said. The room was very clean, good sized with a TV on the wall. Bathroom was very clean and good sized.
Could not fault the breakfast every morning as it was a buffet with sausages, hash browns, baked beans, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes and all that. And also juices and cereals.
Great location for this hotel, right in the centre on Princes Street, right opposite the Scott Monument (which is a good experience for £4 each and excellent views of Edinburgh. Very tight spaced as its only one way up and the same way back down.) About a ten minute walk to the castle which make sure to get there early as there will be queues!
We didn't eat at the hotel's restaurant as there are plenty around as well once found your surroundings.
When leaving the hotel the check out time is 11am but they can hold your luggage at the hotel.
Would recommend and probably stay here again for its central location.

The Old Waverley is in a superb position on Prince's Street with a view of the Old Town and Castle.... Unfortunately that is where the positives being to turn negative, although there was nothing specific to complain about it was just the combination. My room was on the 1st Floor and quite small with a side street view of what seemed to be a derelict building. Clean enough, but tired looking - apart from the bathroom which was absolutely fine, except I couldn't close the door. The bed was a little uncomfortable and I could feel the outlines of the springs in the mattress But it was the noise! Without air-conditioning the room was hot and so I opened the window to be greeted by the sound of city traffic and then at three in the morning a screaming drunken female and friends. I know this is not the hotel's fault, but please some air-conditioning would have solved the problem. Other positives - bar was okay and the barman very civil. Receptionists were fine too. Luckily was only a short trip and I survived. Maybe I was just unlucky with that particular room,

Room Tip: A room away from the front, unless it has air-con and double glazing
