Very disappointed with hotel restaurant. Had booked Burns Night menu and had to send the Meal back twice. Kitchen staff then went home so did not receive a hot meal. How can a hotel operate in such a fashion. Completed hotel questionnaire and requested a reply. Surprise surprise hotel have not bothered to have the decency to respond. Stay at your own risk.

The Old Waverley is a traditional British hotel on Princes Street in the heart of Edinburg. It's within walking distance of most museums and attractions. It's not fancy but clean, well maintained and with a friendly staff. It offers a very good Scottish breakfast; other meals are acceptable but not great.

Stayed at the Waverley Hotel for a long weekend in Edinburgh and its location (Princes Street) is superb. The staff are friendly and the food is good but one piece of advice-make sure you don't get a room at the back of the Hotel as your room has frosted glass windows

I have to say that the hotels location 2 mins walk from Waverley train station (which is also where the airport bus stops) and right on Princes Street is fantastic. Also the room we were given had a lovely view of the castle and was traditionally decorated and clean.

Why have I given it only 2 Stars then!? Because of the old fashioned and archaic financial policy and attitude. On the day of my journey to Edinburgh I noticed that my bank account was light by £56 which had been taken by the hotel. When I arrived and checked in AND paid in full for the room I asked why and was told "just in case". When I questioned this they could not give me an answer. They then proceeded to ask me for an extra £25 deposit "just in case" I ordered anything from the bar during my stay. This I flatly refused, which didn't go down very well.

Apparently I will get my £56 back in a week or so. I have stayed in countless hotels(over a dozen in Edinburgh) and have never been temporarily robbed by any of them. For this reason alone I will never stay here again.

Room Tip: Have plenty of spare money that you can do without while you are there

We spent Valentine's weekend at the Old Waverley. It has a certain faded glory though some areas would benefit from a spruce up. It is on Princes Street opposite the Scott Memorial and the view from our room was great. Being on Princes Street was both good and bad, we were close to everything, including the train station, but the noise never stopped, groups were wandering past the hotel well into the wee small hours of the morning, clearly having had a good night out! So maybe you shouldn't expect a good night's sleep staying here. Having said that, it served as a good base for us, the room was warm and comfy and had everything we needed, and the staff were all very pleasant.

Stayed here over valentine's weekend with my husband. Had not requested a room with a view of Prince's street, so wasn't expecting anything fantastic with the room. Was very pleasantly surprised! Our room was huge! Bed was huge, bathroom was very new and spotless, it had the most amazing view over Prince's street and, most importantly, over Edinburgh Castle! Certain parts of the hotel are a little tired and could do with updating, but it is comfortable, warm and staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a brilliant location: right on Prince's St., just a five minute walk from the royal mile and right opposite waverly station and airlink bus stop (so no having tom drag your luggage half way around Edinburgh or having to pay for expensive taxis!). It's not a luxury hotel, but what else do you need when you're planning to spend most of the day being a 'tourist' and sightseeing!

A party of 6 of us stayed here for the recent Rugby weekend. The general consensus is that the hotel is 'worn and tired'.
Yes it has got lovely views and very pleasant, helpful staff etc .
Unless you pay extra for large-bedded rooms, the other rooms are very small. We all had double beds(not kingsize!) and found them to be very small and prevented us from getting good nights sleep. The rooms we had, had very little space in them and felt very claustrophobic
The public areas need new carpets and a general 'spruce up' .
All in all , did the job but would think twice about staying here again

Room Tip: pay extra for a large bedded room !

EdinburghCollection, General Manager at The Old Waverley Hotel, responded to this review, 21 February 2014
My thanks to his reviewer for their honest feedback and I am happy to acknowledge that certain areas of the Old Waverley do need addressed and we are wroking on this right now. We recently replaced all the beds in the hotel and added a brand new carpet on the reception and first floors and htis is just the beginning of the works planned. We take great pride in our fabulous property and have no intention of letting things slip!
