This is a non-chain hotel, away from noise, but convenient enough to the city centre if you are happy with a 15 minute walk. We had a top floor room that was large, comfortable and with an excellent bathroom. When in our room, we heard nobody else in the hotel. The service was good and the breakfast was first class. The place was clean and the staff were courteous.Parking was on the street outside at a £1 and hour until 1730. The front of the hotel looked out onto a garden and the atmosphere was one of serenity. The cost was not overly expensive but in the mid range and represented pretty good value for money. You are close to a range of shops and eating places in a fairly classy area of the city. If you have got the impression that this is a good hotel, then you have got it.

Room Tip: The large rooms at the top of the building are roomy and quiet.

What a lovely hotel, old world charm and service with a smile. Would certainly recommend to any-one staying in Edinburgh. We stayed 5 nights when visiting the Tattoo, again a brilliant experience. It is a 10min walk out of the city but in a quiet area.
We had room 40 which was a little bit extra but well worth it. It had a double bedroom separate to the comfortable lounge and both of which had big bay windows with superb views. Obviously a bathroom as well: it felt rather like your own private quarters. Both rooms had a television in each room. Breakfast was delicious and the smoked salmon/scrambled eggs were scrumptious. All staff were very helpful, especially Olivia on the front desk, nothing was too much trouble. As I say, old world charm in all respects. Not meaning Olivia was old! Would certainly visit Channings again.
Many Thanks to you all.

Room Tip: As said room 40 was good in all respects

A super review of Channing's and one that summarises what we aim to achieve perfectly. Many thanks for the kind words regarding our rooms and breakfast offering, and for singling out the newest member of our team, Olivia, for such high praise. I will pass this on to her - she will be thrilled!

Hotel was booked as a birthday treat. Certainly lived up to the high standards and excellent service. Neither of us knew which room we were booked into so the four poster bed and jacuzzi bath were added bonuses. Very relaxed atmosphere within lounge areas. Hotel appeared to have many guests on business. Good location for west end. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 1 which had the four poster bed and jacuzzi bath. The bath took forever to fill so we...

Upon arrival we were informed that we were being upgraded to a Superior room. This turned out to be one of the rooms named after members of the Ernest Shackleton team, James Caird. He was a major sponser of the expedition but, unfortunately died the day before word was received of Shackleton's success! The hotel had been one of Shackleton's residences. The room was great with a modern bathroom that you could hold a party in. The staff were excellent and anxious to help when required. Having travelled the world this competes with the best easily.
Highly recommended.

Very good sleep here in a comfortable and quiet room even at the height of the festival. Room was small bit this was not a problem since there was only me. Classed as a single but had a small double bed. The hotel is quite a bit away from the centre and there is really no where within a 15 minute walk to eat other than the hotels own bistro, which is not a problem except that it wasn't open when I stayed (which I did not expect - I chose this hotel because it had a restaurant). Luckily it was still possible to have bar snacks but the choice is obviously a bit limited. I didn't have a car but it looked like it might be difficult to park outside if the hotel was full - there may be other parking, I didn't ask. Nice if you want to get away from the hustle, bustle and noise of the city.

Room Tip: I would think that they will all be quiet. Mine overlooked the street, and had a nice view (but not...

Many thanks for a charming review of Channings and I would echo this guest's sentiments regarding car parking. It is advisable to speak with the hotel prior to arrival and we will let you know the best place to park your car depending on when and for how long you will be staying.

The room was unexpectedly large and bright with very clean and comfortable double bed. The hotel's location is within walking distance of the shopping area of the city center and the castle (about a 25 minute walk) and is in a very quiet part of the city.

Scotland's greatest asset is it's people. They are down to earth, friendly, ready to help and genuine. The hotel staff is no exception. They cannot wait to be helpful and want to please to a fault!

We will return to this magnificent country and to the Channings Hotel!

Room Tip: On the ground level there is a computer for guests to share and a greatr restaurant and bar

Wow! Located in a quiet, select street, this establishment oozes comfort, elegance and architectural splendour with many period fireplaces and the opulence of a private home. It also boasts splendid views across the north of the city and the Firth of Forth. Top notch food and gracious service - who could ask for more?

My nephew and I retreated to Channings to dine courtesy of an Itison voucher. I was the first to arrive and ordered a large Baileys Irish Cream on the rocks (£9.50) from the basement bar, went back upstairs and ensconced myself in one of the easy chairs in the bay window of the reception/lounge area and browsed a copy of the Financial Times while I waited. Didn't have long to wait before His Nibs arrived and we both adjourned downstairs to the bar. A gin and tonic (£5.10) was called for and then at 6.30 p.m. prompt we went through to the stately diningroom and checked in for our meal.

We were ushered to a cosy table (candlelit) for two and perused our menus. We ordered a bottle of still water and nephew ordered a large glass of Merlot. For starters, he ordered the plum tomato soup and I ordered the salmon, both accompanied by fresh white/brown bread and butter. For mains, nephew ordered the chicken and I ordered the vegetarian risotto. We both had the same dessert - strawberries, meringue and lemon curd ice cream. To die for! The portions were more than substantial, beautifully presented and we were both replete. All the food is really top notch, locally sourced and the establishment is also registered with the Scotch Beef Club

We then adjourned back to the bar where nephew ordered a decaff coffee with hot milk and I ordered another (single) glass of Baileys Irish Cream on the rocks. On checking out the menu for bar meals, these were quality dishes at competitive prices. Family dining promotions are available between 12 noon and 2 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. daily from Channings bar menu. One child under 5 eats for free with two paying adults eating main meals in the bar.

Interestingly, the basement bar is also a haunt for locals who pop in for a drink and sometimes bring in their very well behaved four legged friends. We saw two gents drinking at the bar during the course of the evening who'd brought their dogs in and nobody objected. There is also a sheltered beer garden at the back if you want to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.

Channings is very civilised and recognises Ladies who Lunch! Priced at just £18.95 per person for a 3-course lunch and a glass of fizz each (based on a table of 4), lunch is served in the diningroom on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2.30 p.m. and Sundays from 12.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m., but make sure you book ahead first.

All in all we had a most enjoyable dining experience and one we would very much like to repeat before too long. Would highly recommend this establishment - though, sadly, it is not disabled or wheelchair friendly due to all the steps outside and stairs inside.

We did not stay at the hotel as we are Edinburgh residents, so we are not qualified to pass comments on the accommodation. However, there is no reason to doubt that this would not be of the same high quality and excellent standard as the facilities we used.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front would have the best views!
