My girlfriend and I were treated to a holiday together by her father, and we decided to stay at Channings. Having looked at a number of other hotels, we were drawn in by the 'Romantic Package' whereby for an extra cost, we would have a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates waiting in our room on arrival, as well as a full scottish breakfast included each morning.

On arrival there was no champagne or chocolates in our room, not a big deal at all and it was swiftly sorted out without fuss.

However, things turned sour the next morning, when we went down for our 'included' breakfast and were quite rudely told by the grumpy, crass, and obnoxiously loud waitress that we had a 'room only' deal. On trying to show her our booking confirmation email, she only became more stubborn.

After breakfast I went to speak with the manager, to ensure that nothing else would go wrong for the rest of the stay. The previous mishaps had been blamed on a computer error, so I asked him in person if he had it on record that we had booked late check-out for 2pm the next day. He assured me that the hotel was aware, and I hoped that would be the end of it.

At about midday, a full two hours before we were due to check out, a maid walked into our room. Considering we had a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on the door, this was the final straw.

On check-out I made a polite complaint to the hotel manager. He was keen to tell us he was not going to make any excuses, before using a 'computer glitch' as an excuse. In my opinion that could be used to explain the first two mishaps, but it does not account for the woman at breakfast being so rude, nor for the inexcusable intrusion - having tried to check with the manager in person that we had late check out.

I was then assured that the head of this group of hotels would be in touch to offer some sort of compensation, but despite 3 weeks passing, and two calls to the hotel from myself to chase things up, we have had no contact whatsoever.

I feel we have been dismissed as children, or not taken seriously, because we are twenty years old. We had a lovely time in Edinburgh, but Channings made it difficult.

We stayed in this hotel, the first of 11 (!) on our trip through Scotland and Ireland, and it was a wonderful introduction to the city and country. The location was wonderful; all attractions were within easy walking distance (Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, National Gallery, National Museum), but it was in a quiet location in a residential area of the NewTown, close to the wonderful villages of Stockbridge and Dean Village. We ate in the bar several evenings (however, not the restaurant, but I assume the food was the same), and liked the variety of food and the conviviality of the locals who also frequent the bar. Their breakfast was also sumptuous (as all Scottish breakfasts are) and served in a very nice room. The only drawback for us was the size of the room (a bit small) and the lack of counter/storage and light in the bathroom. However, we found this to be often the case in our rooms through both Scotland and Ireland. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.

On first impressions, the reception area is truly wonderful. Myself and my girlfriend got a last minute weekend away and decided Edinburgh was long overdue

Walking into the hotel was mindblowing, the sumptuous chairs and old style fireplace made us feel as though we had been thrown back in time. The reception staff were very attentive and Scott who was also there made us feel very welcome. His knowledge of the city and cool bars was extensive.

Our room was a little tired to say the least but we did get a cheap deal all the same so we didn’t want to complain. However, if we had paid full rate, it would have put a dampner on things

It had been a long day but our night was just starting and we headed down to the bar.

Unfortunately, there was no staff around so we waited and waited. We knew there was a bartender not far away as there was a woman asleep by the tv who had obviously had too much to drink. Looking around, the artwork on the walls wasn't what we expected from a hotel of this standard and in truth the general condition of the bar and its occupants was chalk and cheese to what we had initially experienced. It seemed more like a kennel and a glorified pub for loud drunk locals.

The bartender finally arrived and we ordered cocktails and took a seat. I don’t think she knew what she was doing as she had to get a manual out and then leave the bar for ingredients.

Finally we got our mediocre drinks but by then there was already a bad taste in our mouth and an unruly woman and her daughter seemed to commandeer the bar area

All in all though, it was an enjoyable stay but I would stay well clear of the bar area and take your drinks upstairs, there is more chance of seeing staff up there

We spent a three night stay at Channings in late September. It was so special to be in a room that Shackeltion, the explorer, had lived in. We loved the photos from the Nimrod expedition on the walls. The room was so spacious! The staff was very helpful and made our stay comfortable. The pub downstairs was fun and delicious for dinner. The breaksfast were amazing. We wished that we could of stayed longer.

Room Tip: Ask for a third floor room in the main townhouse, Shakelton's. There is a lift.

The hotel oozed old world charm, was clean and had outstanding service and staff. The bathrooms were delightfully large. The location is about a 20 minute fast walk to the centre of things in Edinburgh, but for us this was an enjoyable walk and all part of the pleasure. We needed a laundromat and this was about a 10 minute walk - the hotel option would have been uncomfortably expensive. Parking is a bit tricky - one has to search for a non-resident roadside space and pay via the meters, although after 5.30pm on Friday it is free. Guests should bear this in mind when considering luggage, as you may have to roll it down the road a bit. Breakfast was good value and the hotel has a nice bar and resturant for those who can stay out of the wonderful pubs in Edinburgh. We would stay again!

Room Tip: Room 2 was excellent.

Stayed 2 nights October 2013. Hotel very clean, rooms large, our's had large window overlooking a park in a wonderfully quiet street a 15 minute walk from Princes St, or a 10 minute bus ride, stop being 5 minutes away from Channing's, bus travelling into Princes St, then onto Royal Mile Staff very helpful and friendly. Restaurant menu odd, bit unimaginative and short, bar menu superior and better value for money- check before dining. Breakfast fine, reasonable choice. Quality of food overall decent enough.
Would certainly stay at Channing's again in the future, no hesitation, and thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Room 52 excellent, presumably others in same area likewise. Not bothered by that singular curse of h...

I stayed here for one night with my husband for our anniversary. We booked a suite, which was beautifully decorated and a pleasure to stay in. The receptionist was professional but perhaps could have been a little chattier to make the customer service a bit more personal. We had breakfast in the morning, there was a good range of food and it was all lovely. The service in the restaurant was great, the lady who seemed to be in charge was really friendly. Would stay again, was worried after reading other reviews about how far out it was from the centre but it's only a short taxi ride away.
