“Fantastic Service”
Reviewed 4 December 2012

The staff are unbelievably helpful, the breakfasts are to die for, (I really need to know how chef makes the poached eggs so perfectly). Evening meals were lovely, I would recommend the ribeye steaks to anyone!! The facilities of Gym, Pool, sauna and steam room and spa are an added bonus at this hotel. Our room was lovely, 6th floor with a view of Arthur's Seat to boot and access to the library! Gorgeous complimentary toiletries! Concierge service second to none, and the duty manager was ever so helpful to us. Well placed for Royal Mile, and a nice steady walk out of town, with the pubs helping our walk home! 2nd time we have stayed, we will be back!! OH, and the bed was super comfy, and extra pillow request was sorted with a smile!!

Room Tip: Standard rooms are superb, 6th floor are nicer.......

Check-in easy & quick. Reception & concierge staff very friendly. Our room was lovely, very clean & comfortable. Breakfast pretty good apart from my order not being quite right on 2nd morning but I didn't mention it to the staff, I'm quite sure they would have corrected it if I'd asked. Location good, we got a taxi to the hotel from waverly train station when we arrived because it was raining but otherwise walked everywhere. The reason I booked this hotel was because a lot of other hotels more central had comments regarding lots of noise at night, this was not a problem here, didn't seem to be any nightclubs etc around, bit of road noise but if you're that fussy I guess you'd be better not to stay in a city!

Stayed one night in this hotel and had a fantastic time. The location is excellent only 2 minutes walk to the Royal Mile with its brilliant pubs and shops. The centre is only another 5 minutes walk across the bridge with lovely views as you walk. The hotel itself is very comfortable and our room was very spacious with a large bathroom complete with toiletries and fluffy white towels. The staff are very helpful and suggested an italian restaurant which we found to be excellent. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choices of cereal and fresh fruit. I would definitely return here again.

Arrived, and was checked in early.. we did ask for a room with a view of Arthurs Seat which we didn't get BUT we did get a room on the 4th floor which was high enough for us, although the view of the car park wasn't great still the room was lovely - nice flat screen tele.. bathroom nice and clean and was very quiet and the air con worked.
The Receptionists were very nice... we asked for a wire for the internet which was free. Was about 10 minute walking distance from the old town - but if you want to go to Princess St it does take a little longer............ lots of steps in Edinburgh!
Over all lovely stay.

Room Tip: Ask for an internet cable. Floor 4 is quiet.

It is the best located for Holyrood (obviously). The rooms are a little dated and they could do with a better standard of cleaning, like most places, they just arent deep cleaned regularly enough. That said, I was surprised how nice the staff were, including a concierge who took a heavy bag, I had asked to store at reception, straight up to my room. I get service like this spontaneously about once a year, so kudos. Very helpful front desk staff make a stay for me and a rare 4 star review from me!

Room Tip: If you want quiet the back, but the views are out front

Having stayed in a couple of other Macdonald hotels, we were slightly disappointed with this one. The location is good, as others note, but it is also true that it could do with a bit of money spent, both on the rooms but also the smallish bar/reception area. The room was a good size, considering the central location, but furnishings somewhat faded. Futhermore, in my view a double bed (esp if called Kingsize) should be a double - not 2 singles pushed together, which also seemed somewhat shorter than normal (I am only 6ft so no giant). Bathroom too, big enough, and clean, but not of 5 star WOW calibre.
Had breakfast both days which was good, and served to you rather than buffet which always adds a bit of class. No complaints about the service - in fact they let is check in at 12ish the first day which was a bonus. However, all in all, it lacks the sparkle I would expect from a Macdonalds hotel.

We checked into the Macdonald Holyrood for two nights in November 2012 for our wedding anniversary. It was £110 per night room only, and they wanted £17.50 pp for breakfast. We didn't bother. I really wouldn't describe it as a 4 star hotel. The so called 'piano bar' isn't a seperate bar at all , just a piano dumped near the front door. So the 'bar' is really just part of the entrance hall to the hotel and consequently very cold with the doors constantly opening. We ordered two drinks (over £11 for a beer and vodka and tonic) and had to ask the waiter for some nuts which others had been given automatically. There was a load of glue all around the room safe which looked awful. On Saturday evening, we had no hot water which just should not happen in a 4 star hotel. To be fair, they knocked some money off the bill when my wife complained. The hotel isn't nealy as central as many others in the city and is in a pretty crumby part of town. So overall it was so something of a disappointment. I wouldn't recommend it.
