We stayed here for 2 nights from 18th-20th Dec for the 2nd year running using Tesco vouchers. Again we were not disappointed at all. We received first class service from the moment we checked in at 9.30 am, when we were given our rooms even though check in was not until 2.00. We travelled with another couple and were given rooms opposite each other, both were spotlessly clean and the bathrooms well stocked with toiletries.
We ate dinner here on the first night and chose the 3 course menu for £15.95 which was amazing. Choices of 3-4 for each course, all cooked to perfection. As we were celebrating a 40th birthday we were given a complememtary glass of champagne.
The hotel is located within easy reach of the royal mile, about 5 mins walk away, and is very quiet at night. Edinburgh itself is a charming city, with so much to see, but all very eay to walk around. A must see is the real Mary Kings Close, and the Holyrood Palace.
We are booking again for this year.

Knowing Edinburgh well but usually staying at the cheaper end of the market when we go to stay, we decided to treat ourselves and stay at the MacDonald Holyrood Hotel. I am so glad we did. What a great experience. We had booked ourselves in for a spa treatment when we arrived (it is advisable to book in advance for a treatment as it gets booked up quickly) and were not disappointed. It was a great start to our stay. The whole spa area was well kept, clean and staff were friendly and efficient.
We decided to eat in the restaurant that evening and enjoyed an excellent meal. We like our food and felt that the standard was at the top end of the scale. Again staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. It was quiet when we were there but there is a sense that the dinning room is well run and staff know their stuff.
Our room was clean and well appointed with everything you would need. We both had a sense that the rooms felt nice and solid and there was no sound of banging doors from the corridors once you were in your room. We did have a problem with the cold tap which ran hot now and then, and the television in the room now looks quite old fashioned and out of place but these were minor and did not detract from our enjoyment of the room.
On the other 2 evenings of our stay we ate out but came back to the hotel for a coffee and a nightcap before going to our room. We were very impressed when the bar tender remembered our order from the previous evening. This level of attention was replicated throughout the staff in the hotel. They were friendly and attentive without being over stuffy and nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel itself is not much to look at from the outside (and indeed we nearly drove past it when trying to find it) but once inside it looks grand and has a lovely feel to it.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back.

I have never written a review here or anywhere else before, but feel I have to to stop you travelling to this awful hotel. From start to finish we experienced what must be the worst run hotel in the UK.
We arrived on Saturday 28th Feb for a one night stay as we were visiting friends on the Sunday and then flying back down south.
To say the receptionists were rude is an under-statement! The boy and girl (if they weren't, they both looked under 16!) were chatting to each other and totally ignored us for a good 2 or 3 minutes. What followed was a rude, abrubpt and curt check in whci resulted in us having to find the room with no directions and no-one even offered to help with bags.
The room was small, tired and had a huge pen mark up the wall obviously where kids had stayed previously. I won't mention the room number here because quite frankly I don't want the hotel contacting me!
We went out for dinner but heard many guests complaining the next morning about how poor the food and service was. A good choice not to eat in the hotel!
We got back late and the bar was extremely rowdy. The barman who was on was oblivious to the fact that at least 10 guys were pouring drinks over the floor and sofas. Bad management!
What followed at beakfast the next morning was just a farce. A 35 minute wait for a table, not offer of tea or coffee, no offer of toast and a further 20 minutes wait for the order to be taken. A basic 1 star guest house even knows the basics!!! The was one person who looked like a manager (he had a suit on) and he was running around like a headless chicken. Absolute pandomonium! When the food did arrive, un-surprisingly it was cold. I was too annoyed to complain as the queue waiting to complaine appeared very long.
On check out I mentioned all of the above to a chap on reception who really looked like all he wanted to do was finish his shift. The bags under his eyes told me he had had a late night! I didn't waste my breath any further and we got out as quickly as possible.
I booked the hotel because it was cheap (£90 for the night) but it was never worth even that.
If the General Manager reads this, I would urge him or her to seriously look at how their hotel operates. It is a shambles. I work in-directly in the hospitality industry and if my employers gave this kind of service, we would all be out of a job.
Major room for improvement and I would urge anyone wishing to book in Edinburgh to stick to a well-known brand like Hilton or Radisson.

Taking advantage of their 50% off deal we booked into the Holyrood for a night in Edinburgh after seeing a concert. It only cost £109 for DB&B for the two of us. We managed to find it ok, and once booked in handed over the car keys to the conscierge who arranged parking for us for £20. This is half the price our train tickets would've cost so I was more than happy, and it was far more convenient than using public transport. The hotel had a nice relaxed atmosphere, although it still managed to retain a certain formalness which I liked. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the location excellent for sightseeing. The food was nice, although non quite as good as I expected for the awards the restaurant has won, but then again I am a food snob. I would certainly recommend this hotel. My only grumble is that it isn't made clear how to claim the second half price stay I am entitled to. Oh and I was far too taken with the cocktail bar to take advantage of the spa........

We booked 3 nights at Holyrood hotel based on the mostly positive reviews by the members of Tripadvisors and because the location of the hotel; close enough to Royal Miles (about 10minutes walk) but far enough away from the pub crowds. We were not disappointed. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We have got a well sized room at 1st floor. I particularly like the two nice armchairs in the room where we can comfortably sit after a day walking in the city.

As I already mentioned, we chose this hotel also because the hotel is on a quiet street. Beside of that, most of the rooms are faced on two very narrow walking streets (so called “close”), so there is no street noise at all. The room seems very well sound-proof as well. During our stay we have not heard anything from other rooms. I think most of the guests are quiet types of persons too; no one was talking loudly on the corridor.

Every morning we enjoyed the excellent breakfast in the hotel restaurant. I very much liked the way how they serve the warm part of the breakfast; you order what you like and everything will be served freshly cooked on a hot plate. I think the breakfast staff are doing excellent work.

We ate one dinner at hotel restaurant and it was quite good. Two course dinner for 19 pounds per person. But not far from the hotel there are three very good restaurants too: Wedgwood restaurant (modern Scottish) at Canongate, David Bann (modern vegetarian) at St. Mary's street and Stac Polly (cosy bistro) also at St. Mary's street. By Stac Polly they serve about 7 kind of nice simple dishes; 4,95 pounds as starter or 9,95 pounds as main course. So you can decide your own sequence how you want to eat. If you are not very hungry, you can order two starters for example.

So, if you prefer to have a quiet night sleep and you don't mind to have some walk (hill up to Royal Mile and hill down return), I will recommend this hotel to you.

This hotel had a really nice interior and room was perfect you could not fault the hotel itself. Staff were also friendly and always ready to help nothing seemed to be a problem for them. Only fault was the location which for us was a bit of a disappointment seemed a little out of the way from the atmosphere of the city. All bars restaurants and attractions were all about 15 minute walk away which dont sound to bad but it was all uphill walk!!! Ok for walking back to hotel but hard work to get to the centre of Edinburgh. This is a big shame as the hotel itself is faultless.

We stayed in this hotel the night before and the night of our wedding. The hotel was the perfect location for us as we were getting married nearby.

We had pre-booked a number of rooms and the hotel staff were very helpful to all that stayed as part of our party. They catered for all our needs and we couldn't have asked for anymore from them.

The hotel itself is very nice. The lobby area is very impressive, with a nice little bar and a grand piano. The restaurant is also just off the lobby.

There are 6 floors of rooms, all of which are well appointed and well presented. The beds are a good size and the bathrooms are very good, with power showers. The 6th foor is only accesible by a special lift key. We had reserved this floor due to the wedding and it was really nice. It had a library where you could have breakfast in the morning rather than going downstairs to the main restaurant and even a champagne reception was thrown in!

The hotel also has spa facilities, which are very nice and well maintained.

In terms of location in Edinburgh, it is ideal for anyone visiting, in particluar the old town. It is a few hundred yards away from the Scottish Parliament building and within walking distance of the Royal Mile, with its vast array of shops, bars and restaurants.
