“Ticked all the boxes!”
Reviewed 15 October 2013

This hotel was cheap for a city centre hotel so we didn't know what to expect, but it was clean, nicely decorated and close to the centre. There is a neat bar and restaurant which was good enough to meet up with friends in before taking taxis. we found the staff very friendly.

The only downside may have been traffic and external noise but I get that whatever hotel I stay in and it was no worse!

This little hotel has a lot going for it. All the reception staff I've come across have been really friendly, and really helpful, and this time was no exception. The breakfast is stunning for a tenner - full cooked breakfast, croissants, cereals, fruit, juice. In the room there's kettle, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and an iron and ironing board. And it's a three minute walk from both the airport bus stop and from Haymarket station, so it's uber-convenient.

As generally happens I had a front-facing twin room, but the road noise was no problem at all. One of the mattresses felt a bit worn, but the other was really comfortable and with great pillows this was one of the best night's sleeps I've had for a long time, including those at home.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars this time was that I paid the full whack (it's really really good value if you book far enough ahead and get it for £60 or whatever) and because the bathroom was starting to feel a bit tired - particularly some of the grout needed replacing. But that doesn't detract; there are so many positives about this hotel. I definitely plan to stay here again.

stayed friday night, very cozy, clean and friendly hotel, 2 minutes from edinburgh (Haymarket) train station, and buses (no.26/31 & N26/N31) outside door to all parts of the city centre.

Love Edinburgh, better now its only 4 hours to London by train, great city for a long weekend away and lovely people...

Edinburgh buses run 24/7 and a pass from 6pm to 6am is £3.50 if your planning a night out on the town.

Decent hotel within easy walking distance of the town centre. The rooms were clean and functional.
But beware, finding it with a 'sat nav' is a nightmare, and the road works in that area of town are particularly bad at the moment. As mentioned by other reviewers advertising the hotel 'with car parking' is a bit of a joke, as there are only about 12 spaces, and in an area awash with double yellows there isn't an alternative.
Having said that the staff were extremely accommodating and shuffled all their cars so that we could get ours in, not ideal for all concerned.
Would stay there again, but not with the car!

Stayed here for one night on way home from holiday. Room was ok bed was very comfortable . Bathroom was in need of a little maintenance . Shower door didn't close properly which meant the floor flooded every time you had a shower & Toilet was very hard to flush. We had dinner and breakfast which were both very good and we also got a £10 voucher towards food which was a bonus. Overall stay was very good .Staff were very friendly and helpful .

An unassuming building, with interior that would need a bit of upgrade, but the room was very comfortable. Appreciated the water boiler and tea and biscuits provided each day. It is unfortunate that breakfast is an extra expense at a price not worth paying. The location of the hotel was really handy for all our train rides!

Stayed here after staying in the other Apex hotel in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh last year. Sadly there is little comparison. Our standard double room was small with awkward high windows which only gave in minimal natural light. Room contained a king sized zip link bed, one arm chair, small desk with plentiful plug sockets and desk light, kettle with tea/coffee, fridge with complimentary water x 2, small wardrobe space, small safe, iron + board. The light shades, bedding and walls were all suffering from stains and wear and tear.
Bathroom was of similar decor as rest of room - whilst modern it was beginning to show wear and tear including a chipped toilet seat. The bath was very short and the shower head not very efficient and had a tendency to be luke warm or scalding.
The hotel has free wifi which worked well although it didn't save your log in and you had to repeatedly log back in. The TV and DVD in the room worked well.
Our room overlooked the busy main road so the noise prevented us opening windows at night. The room did come with a table top fan which we did use.
One of the reasons we booked this hotel was the access to a car park but be warned the car park only contains approx 10 spaces at the rear lane and is used by staff as well as residents. The hotel is a short walk from haymarket station and will be near the new tram system once open in 2014.
The area has a number of decent cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops within 5 min walking distance.
We didn't eat in the hotel or take the breakfast so can not comment on food.
Staff at reception were polite, helpful and efficient.
Over all a hotel which is showing signs of its age and compared to other modern hotels in this price range you can find better accommodation in central Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Room to rear will be quieter but dark and have a poor view.
