“Comfortable hotel with friendly staff”
Reviewed 2 March 2010

Parliament House Hotel is a good value hotel with good food and friendly staff. It is very near the station and Princes Street. Access to both the Old Town and the New Town is easy. No on-street parking, but then the best way to visit Edinburgh is to arrive by public transport. The shortest route from Waverley station is to use the Calton Hill Road exit, turn left and then right into Calton Hill. This avoids crossing busy roads, but the last 100m up Calton Hill is quite steep. Average walking time about 5 minutes.

A 3 star hotel but better then some 4 stars we have stayed in. Breakfast cooked fresh to order & excellant choice. Some reviews said a long wait but we didn't find this, service was quick. We had 2 rooms, 401 & 405. Both good but 401 was better as bigger, better view & warmer with radiator in bathroom as well as bedroom ( 405 only had 1 in bedroom & it was quite cold). Nice to have shower & bath & complimentary toiletries. Right in the city centre only 5 mins from train station. Very quiet as down a little cobbled hill near Calton Hill so no noise on a night( approach the hotel from Waterloo Place as easier to find & not as steep.)

I was on a short break to Edinburgh City and was pleasantly pleased to have chosen the Parliament House hotel.
It is very well located, central to most of the sights, attractions, shops,...
It can be a short, but steep hike up to the hotel, however better to enter by the far end of Princess street.
It's a nice quaint area, cobble stoned street and was quiet. Quiet and yet so very close to the action !!
There is a very 'warm and inviting' area surrounding reception. Nice place to relax and sit by the fireside, read a paper,....
The building seems to make a good effort, to preserve it's interior, in keeping with the older traditional (suppose outdated) styling of the period.
It was homely.
My en-suite room, when I eventually reached it !, had all I needed. It was warm, comfortable and clean.
It was just a bit of a maze, trying to find my room at first !, but thats no big issue.
Breakfast was filling and the served cooked part of it, was adequate enough in terms of both quantity and taste quality.,
One comment, perhaps a touch negative, that I must express, is that when I am visiting a particular country, I quite enjoy Experiencing their Own Unique Cultures, ways of life, etc, at every possible opportunity !
Bearing this minor detail, in mind, I do sence that some of the staff, may not have been all of Scottish origin. ( Not too confusing, when Away on your travels, to a particular country )
However this certainly does not detract too much, from the efficient service provided at Parliament house hotel.
Everything else was help yourself, self-service, and lots to choose from. You will not go hungry.
Coffee was real and delicious ! and is not always the case in various hotels.
The Scottish lady at reception was also noticeably pleasant and helpfull.
Parliament house hotel gets my favourable - Yes vote. I would have no hesitation returning to this property. It was great value in my reckoning.
I was indeed a satisfied guest and would have to nod, aye, I would go back there.

We have just come back from a long weekend at The Parliament House Hotel. Bearing in mind that we have booked in the low season the room rate was very good. The location is good ie at the Carlton Hill end of town about a 10 minute walk to the middle of Princes Street - 20 mins to the Grassmarket. The room was a reasonable size and looked like it had been refurbished within the last couple of years - we were on the ground floor so did not have to use lift or stairs. The decor in the rooms was a bit corporate but comfortable. We were on the street side of the hotel but it was quiet (although this may have been because it was also snowy and cars could not use easily) - the hotel in on a side street and so does not have a lot of traffic going past. There is a steep hill up to the hotel but this can be avoided by walking up Waterloo Place (follows on from Princess Street) and turning left into the road from the top. The staff were very friendly providing maps etc and responded well to any queries. The breakfast is good - it was included in our room rate - there is continental which is cereals, chese and meat plate, lots of fruit (ie soft fruit and yoghurt) and then toast tea etc. Also there is full Scottish which is porridge, bacon sausages, potato scone, tomatoes, mushrooms etc , a vegetarian version or smoked haddock with poached egg or kippers. The food was very nice although a bit slow coming out of the kitchen sometimes but hey you are on holiday ! There is a reception area which also serves as a bar area with fires and comfy seats which was wlecoming, there is also a restaurant called MP's (which is where breakfast was served) - we did not try this as too many other choices in Edinburgh. Hotel has free wifi which I used and which I found was fine. Overall found the hotel very good.

We found this hotel very old fashioned but in a good location. Although our room was ready to check in at 10am staff wasn't helpfull at all. The lady on the desk directed us to our room telling us to follow the signs. After 5 minutes going up and downstairs we finally found it. Note that the lift doesn't take you to every floor so you will need to take a spiral staircase.
On departure we asked if they could look after our bags till late in the afternoon and the receptionist showed us a corner in the lobby and told us to leave them there - not even tagged and in a public area, not very safe.
