I visited Edinburgh in October 2009. We stayed at the Hotel Ibis in Edinburgh. This was abit of a walk from train station, however once we got there it was worth it. Room was excellent- plenty of space, Good shower facilities and regular housekeeping. The only disadvantages to the room were the bed was two mattresses pushed together and they kept hanging over the bed and the noise from the street outside the room. We were facing the main street, which had several bars near (One next door and one near enough across the street) so sleeping was difficult due to noise levels.
Staff were friendly in general, Bar facilities good. Unable to comment on food as got breakfast out. Edinburgh on the whole a brilliant place to visit. Would visit the hotel again, but with ear plugs as an essential if facing the square.
went on the tour of dungeons under city- wasnt worth the money.

This hotel was perfect for what we wanted: reasonably priced and walking distance (about 2 blocks) from the train and bus station and centrally located just off of the Royal Mile giving easy access too all the sites and numerous pubs. We stayed at the Ibis for two nights and knew what we were getting into staying there. Although it was the bare minimum, it was nice and came with a bathroom en-suite and a hairdryer. We passed on the breakfast (we did not care to spend about $10 each) and there was a wonderful café/hot chocolate place just around the corner. Our room was right next to the eating area, but was out of the way of the general foot traffic of the rest of the hotel, so it was fairly quiet. There was no temperature control in the room, because it was controlled system-wide, so we could not change it to our liking. We ended up leaving the window open to get some air. This proved troublesome on Saturday night when a drunken man was arguing with his lady friend for about an hour outside in the small alley. The first floor room appealed to us since we had just come back from hiking Hadrian’s Wall in England and did not care to walk further with our backpacks then needed. We had one issue with a flickering fluorescent in the bathroom, but we reported it on our way out for the afternoon and it was fixed when we got back. Overall, we had a pleasant stay and were quite pleased with the location.

The Ibis in Edinburgh has one great thing going for it - Location. It's right in the centre of the city, and close by to so many great shops and attractions. Everything seems to be right outside your door. For that reason, I would go back.

However, finding the hotel proved to be a little difficult. As well, we had a car and was told we had to park it in a parking garage a 10 minute walk away at a cost of about $20 cad for the night.

The rooms are nothing fancy, a little small, but clean. There was no hairdryer in the room, so pack your own. Service was okay, nothing overly special but not terrible.

Like I said, I would return again simply for the location.

We've stayed in Ibis hotels before so we knew what to expect. The hotel was clean and tidy. The rooms seemed a bit smaller than some but perfectly good for a one night stay - we arrived late and were there only to sleep. The staff were very helpful and friendly. This hotel is ideally situated if you are arriving by train or on the airport bus as it is just a short walk from Waverley station. The location is not so good if you have a car to park (although I suppose this is true of many city centre hotels). They offer a discount at a car park about 7 mins walk away but admit it is quite expensive. I imagine the location could be noisy, being in the centre of town but we were not troubled by noise. Ibis buffet breakfasts always seem a bit expensive to me but it was OK with some hot food. There is a small bar in the lobby but no restaurant. They do offer a 24h menu but, noticing the microwave in the bar area, I presume it will be fast food.

We stayed in the Ibis for 3 nights and there are good and bad points but overall I would definatly stay there again as its so local to the Royal Mile, Princes Street and the train station.
We only paid £177 for 3 nights in a double room which was really cheap considering the prices of hotels just over the road, but the room was very basic and starting to look a bit worn but since we were only there to sleep I cant complain the only thing I would have changed was to have a window to the outside as our rooms window faced inside on to other rooms windows so we had to have the blinds drawn at all times.
The staff were so friendly and willing to help they make life so much easier, we got there before 10am not expecting our rooms to be done but they rushed to finish so we could have our room straight away, also they stored our luggage all day on the day we checked out and all with a smile on their faces, nothing was too much trouble.

Hotel is ideally situated just off the Royal Mile and within walking distance of the Grassmarket and Cowgate. Staff are very helpful and professional and check in / out was quick and easy. Rooms were not brilliant though - twin beds were some of the smallest beds I've ever seen and the bathroom was ill equipped. The fan was not working, the toilet was crammed into one of the corners forcing you to sit sideways, there was no toilet brush, and the whole appearance left the impression that it was a rushed job to install everything, with a lack of 'finishings' most apparent. Breakfast is a cold buffet with severely limited choice. As we spent most of our time outside, location was our main priority for choosing the hotel. The two nights we had were interrupted early in the morning by construction work across the street, but this would only be a temporary nuisance for people staying in the weeks / months around the date of this review. The hotel is recommended for the non-fussy guest who wants a no-nonsense, no-frills stay in a fantastic location. The more discerning customer might want to look around elsewhere though as there is better value for money out there.
