“Great location for sightseeing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 January 2014

We stayed at the Apex City Hotel in Edinburgh on the 14th to 16th January 2014 while on a short city break. First impressions were great, with very friendly check-in staff who allowed us to check-in early. Our room was clean, spacious and warm, with ample storage. The bathroom was well equipped, and had a bath and separate shower. We did not have any meals at the hotel, and so can't comment on the food, but we did use the bar on a couple of occasions, and found the bar staff friendly and helpful. The hotel is in an excellent location for sightseeing, with a superb view of Edinburgh Castle from the front of the hotel, and it is only about 10 minutes walk to both the castle and the main shopping area. There are several restaurants and bars opposite the hotel if you want to vary your eating and socializing. Would definitely use this hotel again. .

Dear Guest

Thank you for scoring us 5***** for all areas. I really appreciate this great score and am so pleased you had an enjoyable visit. Even better is the fact that you said you will “definitely use the hotel again” - this is the best type of praise and I look forward to welcoming you back.

Hotel in front of the Castle, in the center of the city, along the royal mile. Breakfast improvable but the hotel is clean and organized. Not bad, for the best you have to choose the Apex near. My room had both shower and tub (separated), some other only the shower.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with shower and tub.

Great location, pleasant and helpful staff. Supetb breakfast. Good choice of beer in the bar. Upgraded to the master suite which was nice, spacious, well-appointed and clean. The only drawback was that the wash basin fixings (the mixer tap) and thr shower were in need of maintenance, otherwise excellent. Better than 4, not quite 5.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review and for making me aware that the mixer taps in the Suite require maintenance. I will instruct my Maintenance Manager to check each of our Suites to ensure that any problems are immediately rectified.

I am glad you enjoyed your visit and hopefully that next time you stay with us we will score the magic 5.

We came through to see the Lion King and stayed for 1 night. It is a 5 minute taxi ride from Waverley situated at the back of the castle so there is a bit of a hill to climb which was a bit too much for my mum. Nice reception area and was attended to straight away. Our room was not quite ready so we went for a wander round the Grassmarket for an hour. We were on the 2nd floor which looked out on to a side street so not a great view but the room was a good size.
Comfy bed although we found the pillows a bit soft. Large TV, tea and coffee, hairdryer etc
Good sized bathroom with stand alone shower. We had dinner in the hotel 3 course for £19.99 which was very nice. Restuarant was quiet when we arrived but started to fill up as we left
Food was very good and the staff very attentive. Breakfast was excellent with continental selection or the full scottish. All in all an excellent stay and would definatley stay here again

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor with a view of the castle

The hotel is in a good position. The food is good but the best asset is the friendly staff. The kitchen was closed for a refurb but as the sister hotel is only yards away this was no problem at all. Nice bar.

Stayed just before Christmas for a couple of nights and it was ideally located for a walk down to Holyrood, also handy for Museums, Greyfriars and the Castle. Also a hilly but not long walk from Waverley station.
You can remain in the Grassmarket area as there are some decent bars and restaurants close by.
Booking direct, which was our best strategy gave us a great rate; £10 Apex voucher, used for a round of drinks, and breakfast at only £10 for the full Scottish.
Hotel is modern, not too big, with welcoming staff at reception and in the bar. Free wi-fi and a very decent breakfast. Strangely while the breakfast overall was very good with a wide choice, the presentation and quality, (of coffee and bacon in particular) varied from the Monday to the Tuesday.
The restaurant is nice, modern, with some attentive staff and the hotel overall is very clean with nice modern rooms a decent range of TV channels and a tea/coffee/hot chocolate tray which includes a biscuit or two. Bathrooms are a decent size, we had a walk in shower, a free Apex duck on the bath and good quality toiletries.
All in all a good choice and a better stay than some more expensive hotels we have used in the past.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor with a castle view

The hotel has a great location, short walking distance to attractions such as Edinburgh castle and the National Museum of Scotland. Not too far from Princes street either, once you've climbed the hill. The rooms were very clean and nicely furnished, the bathrooms in our double rooms were very big with separate bath and shower. There was no safe in the room, but there were tea making facilites and a huge tv. Our favourite thing was the breakfast, both the continental buffet and the a la carte Scottish breakfast.
