“Definitely would stay here again!”
Reviewed 26 February 2009

My husband and I escaped to Edinburgh for the weekend, and really enjoyed our stay at the Apex City. We arrived and Suki was ever so friendly with maps, breakfast times, etc. If there's one thing that sets this hotel apart besides the location it is the staff!! Every encounter we had was friendly.

The hotel is right across the street from the castle, and has stunning views. We had a quiet room on the top floor, but without a view - still, it was fine for us. Our room (4102) showed signs of repaired water damage by the window, and the repair wasn't done exceptionally well, but it had no effect on us having our weekend away from it all.

We did have a great time at the bar in the evenings after our exploring and dinners out - good, fun staff there who enjoyed making my favourite cocktails. Dessert was also good there.. yum... and breakfast in the morning was included in our rate. Good selection, table service, and exceptionally quick service were the norm, both mornings. And checkout was 12, not 11, just that extra bit of time for my husband to climb Arthur's Seat before leaving while I caught up with the rest of the world on the hotel's WiFi connection (also no problem here).

Checkout - efficient, pleasant - again I have to say the staff were SO friendly.. you forget what life is like outside London!

The hotel is very centrally located - everything within walking distance. The hotel also sits in the middle of the nightlife so depending on your taste you may wish to request a room higher up if you do not want to be disturbed. They also have rooms with views of Edinburgh Castle if you wish. Excellent full breakfast which kept us going as we walked through the cobblestones. Minor problems with our room fixed quickly and always ready to give advice on where and what to do. A book on Edinburgh in the room is full of useful advice on shopping and places to see.

Location for this hotel is amazing. In the middle of the Grassmarket, a hop and a skip and a jump from the Royal Mile. The staff are the friendliest I have ever encountered and I a lot of time away from home.

The girls on reception were wonderful bent over backwards, the rooms are spacious, dvd player, large bathroom, flatscreen tv next time though.

Full breakfast included with the room and a great brekkie too, full Scottish breakfast with haggis.

Book this hotel you will ot be disappointed.

The main benefit by far for this hotel is the location. Directly on Grassmarket opposite the pubs and restaurants but without the noise or trouble that this could cause. It is also only a few minutes walk up the hill to the castle or a further 10mins to Waverley station. If you have more than a small suitcase that can be pulled a taxi may be advisable as Edinburgh is very hilly.

Overall the hotel was clean and modern although the hall carpets and doors were looking a little dated but most hotels suffer from this when they have been open a few years.

The room we had was spacious with a double bed (very comfortable) and seating area that was partially separated with a column to give a split room feel. A TV with DVD player and desk with power points offered space and entertainment. 2 large fitted wardrobes in the corridor of the room offered ample space for clothing and luggage. The room has an iron and ironing board along with a hairdryer but ours only lasted a few minutes as it appeared to over heat. The view from our room was only of a small plot of land in between the hotel and the next building so not great but this did not effect our opinion as city hotels don't usually have great views.

The bathroom is of a good size and included a separate shower and bath although the bath is only small and not enough for 2 people. Good toiletries are also provided and although the bathroom is only heated with a towel radiator but we did not notice any cold as mentioned in another review.

The bar is located to the front of the hotel so views of grassmarket and drinks are reasonably priced but this is probably due to the location and competition of the other hotels and pubs within walking distance. We did not eat lunch or dinner in the restaurant but another outstanding feature is the breakfast. Ours was included but individual priced is comparable to most hotels. The range on the cold buffet was excellent with ham, cheese, pastries(with jams/preserves) and at least 5 or 6 cereals. Water, juices and teas/coffee also available. A full Scottish breakfast (English + black pudding/haggis) is excellent and plentiful and is served with toast.

The Apex rubber duck was a very nice touch!

My husband and I were in Edinburgh in August of 2007 and stayed at this hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed it! There was a Nintendo Wii in the lobby for guests to use, and it was within walking distance to most everything we wanted to see, namely the Fringe festival. Apparently they were in the process of replacing the floor in our room, which we did not notice at all, but we were welcomed to our room with a complimentary bottle of wine and a wine opener. It was a great stay.

Lovely modern hotel, staff were very friendly and helpful. Fab modern bar with good music and the food in the restaurant Agua is really good too. Excellent breakfast as well and a really good overall atmosphere.

We upgraded to a superior double room and although a little on the small side it was comfortable and we had a (somewhat skewed) view of the castle! Beds were also comfortable and the bath products were really lovely. Our minor gripes came in a couple of forms though;

Firstly the heating in the room was practically non-existent - even with it on full the room was still cold. Worse still there is no heating in the bathroom which really doesnt help in the middle of the night - was particularly freezing especially in Edinburgh at this time of year!

Secondly the walls are pretty thin so we ended up woken up a few times by banging doors and conversations etc...pretty annoying when you are trying to get away for weekend to relax!

Overall we'd probably visit again purely because location is brilliant and within walking distance of practically all the main spots - although might be inclined to try their sister hotel just a little bit further down just to see the difference :)

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel for a 3 night stay in Edinburgh for our birthdays. We had an early morning flight and got to the hotel at 10 am hoping to leave our bags somewhere safe so we could have a look around (we weren't due to check-in until 2.30). Our timing couldn't have been better as not only was a room already available for us, but also an upgrade! We'd booked a 'city double' but got a superior room with a kingsize bed with a lovely view of the castle! The room had a big bathroom (with bath and walk-in shower), desk, dvd player, freeview, free wireless internet, hairdryer, iron and board, fridge, safe, and loads of storage space. There were also a couple of nice little touches like jelly beans and pringles with the tea and coffee.

We didn't eat at the hotel in the evening due to the huge range of restaurants nearby, but breakfast was lovely - great choice of hot and cold food. All staff were very helpful and friendly.

The hotel is in a fantastic location - right by all the shops, bars, restaurants and visitor attractions. We would definitely stay here again!
