We were unfortunate to stay here as everywhere else was booked , the rooms were small (with shabby furniture and peeling wallpaper , the bathrooms (shower-rooms) , were terrible, small , dark , smelly , and un-maintained. Three room changes , and we were at the best the hotel could offer , if we had paid ?40 -50 for this hotel , I would have accepted the bad lot , but at ?75 a night , it was a total rip-off. Two of our party found much better ,cheaper accomadation two doors down. The night brought no heating (they had forgot to switch it on!), and no honesty bar . the weekend brought bad manners from the owners , complete disregard for his guests . I'm only thankful the rest of the city was much more hospitable , and hope that the French Rugy fans (hello!) staying there didn't think this is the best on offer - its one of the worst. On a positive note the breakfasts were very good.

I recently had the misfortune to stay at this hotel, mainly as everywhere else was fully booked, and on hindsight it really wasn't difficult to know why this hotel had availability. On arrival we were handed a room key and quickly located the room to peek in the mirror to check we hadn't metamorphosed into characters from 'The Last Of The Summer Wine' on our short flight to Edinburgh. When we opened what we assumed was the wardrobe door, we discovered to our horror a shower and WC. This was a case of Dr. Who's Tardis, more that well known shampoo, in so much as you really could Wash & P without wasting a second. However, all wasn't lost as we have been to this magnificent city many times and looked forward to the rest of our weekend. The city lived up to all our expectations. Unfortunately the 'Allison House' of horror continued. We found the breakfast menu very tempting, and looked forward to a traditional hearty breakfast, until we were told "strictly three items only!"To top it all off, having read so much about the 'honesty bar' prior to our stay, we decided to relax with a drink on Saturday night before going to our room. The first challenge was actually finding this bar within the hotel, which is understandable given it was a small domestic fridge and drinks cabinet located in a front room behind a sofa. On top of the fridge was a sheet of paper and pen requiring details of drinks consumed, room number etc. to be completed and signed. This however was unnecessary as the owners head appeared to be attached by some form of invisible string or elastic band to the fridge door, in so much as every time the door was opened, or indeed the floor boards creaked, his head shot in and out of the door way without as much as a hello. Victor Meldrew might well have felt at home here.

Another fabulous hotel in Europe. The room was huge! After London, we were in heaven! The windows looked out into the garden. Bathroom in tiny, but bedroom is fantasically large. Hotel staff was very accommodating and nice, but the waitress in the morning is rude, just a small thing. They offered us a ground floor room because our bags were so heavy- that was a blessing! There is a lounge with an "honest" bar, fully stocked. Cozy arm chairs to read the paper or watch BBC and have a smoke. Good location to catch a bus. Just a couple miles to the castle. The price was right. Would definately stay again!

We arrived at 9am on a Thursday morning, tired after our flight. We were greeted by David at the hotel reception. We were given a room as soon as we got there. David gave us all the information about things to do, attractions and even which bus to get on to go into the City Centre.Breakfast was out of this world, prompt service again by David. Always a warm welcome when we got back to the hotel after a day/night out. Even when we checked out, they held our bags for us for the evening flight and again came to greet us as we left at 4pm. If your looking for a warm welcome with all the tourist information you need, this is the hotel to stay at! Many thanks for a fantastic stay. Tony
