“Wonderful, relaxing stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2009

Stayed overnight with two friends. We had alovely time - started off with lunch then headed off to the spa for lovely treatments. After that we had drinks at the bar. Dinner was at the Brasserie and was very good. We made pigs of ourselves with the desserts! More drinks at the bar then bed! The next day we had a great breakfast then it was off to the sauna and pool before heading back home. The only other spa hotel I have been to is Stobo Castle which was lovely but the treatments at Norton House were just as good but half the price!

A country House Hotel that I used to know and like in the late 90's. Whilst the old house is still elegant there is a new wing which is modern, well-equipped and anonymous. We chose the hotel specifically because it had a pool and we have children - major disappointment to arrive and find that children are only welcome for 2 hours per day between 15:00 and 17:00 when you probably want to be out & about in Edinburgh! Service (with individual exceptions) was adequate rather than good and the cleaning was very poor. The room in the new wing was irritatingly difficult to get to and the lift was out-of-order for the full 3 days of our visit.
We left feeling disappointed and in the current difficult economic times this hotel has to take a serious look at its service-standards if it wants to compete and survive.

Highly recommend to families - we stayed on a Friday evening with our 2 year old daughter with no problems. Spa and pool excellent and the brasserie was very good too. Overall, I'd say it was good for the money - good service, no noise (we were in the modern part of the hotel),lovely clean room, excellent facilities in the room, etc.

The website for Norton House shows a lovely old looking building. While this is indeed present at the hotel it is slightly misleading. The old, country house style part of the hotel is quite small with very few bedrooms. Instead most of the rooms are in a new block. Our new room was a good size, with a lovely modern bathroom - so no complaints there. However, it was a bit anonymous - I could have been anywhere - whereas I thought I was going to a lovely country house.

The brasserie where breakfast was served was so hot I couldn't finish my breakfast. I orderered boiled eggs and was asked how I wanted them cooked - "soft" was my reply. They came hard boiled! The next morning we had breakfast in our room - and I ordered the pancakes. They were either stale or had previously been frozen. Very poor. I should note that my fiance thought his full Scottish breakfast was good both days.

We ate one evening in the more formal Ushers restaurant - and this was very nice. Good food and lovely service.

Housekeeping was a bit random. Our room was "turned down" the first evening - but they failed to make the bed after our afternoon nap - so we returned to a room with the curtains drawn, bedside lamps on - but an unmade bed. Another day a bottle of sparkling water just left on the floor gradually leaking it's contents everywhere.

The spa is lovely - very new, with sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, good sized swimming pool and treatment rooms. We had a joint treatment in a steam room involving smearing mud over each other and then sitting in the steam. Fun to do as a couple!

The main bar area looks over the car park and fails to take advantage of the setting of the hotel. The drawing room is a better option - as it is in the old part of the house with a pretty view.

Overall - it's a pleasant hoel - it doesn't cost a fortune, but the rooms are nice, modern with good facilities and the spa is great. It's not an amazing old country hotel with great attention to detail and superb service. If you know what to expect you'll have a good time.

Nice hotel with beautiful surroundings and lovely spa although I don't know if I could describe it as a retreat style hotel!!I was attending a wedding there and the reception was beautiful. The food was excellent as was the waiting staff and service. A great day was had by everyone. Myself and my partner were staying in one of the older rooms above reception looking out onto the front of the hotle. Unfortunatly this area is now frequented by smokers and it is impossible to walk out of the hotel without walking into a wall of smoke. I can live with this although it doesn't live up to the hotels idea of a retreat and I wouldn't have wanted to be a guest who was there to get away from it all.

After the wedding I went to bed around 1 and that is when all the noise started. People remaining from both weddings were hanging around outside smoking and yelling. This could be heard clearing through the old sash windows. At around 2 or 3 a full scale argument could be heard between two drunk people. It was virtually inpossible to get to sleep with the constant arguing and taxis coming and going. I think it would be better to have a room in the new part of the hotel as it was far away from any noise.

I feel the hotel should address this issue and move smokers to an area away from the doors and the hotel rooms as is the practice in some other hotels. Otherwise the hotel is nice and the breakfast and food is excellent.

Stayed at the hotel for 3 nights to celebrate wedding anniversary. It is close to the airport (around 10 minutes by taxi), but we were not troubled by aircraft noise. Norton House is set in lovely grounds and is a very peaceful place to stay. We were in the newer part of the hotel overlooking the gardens. The room was fairly spacious and modern - also included a small fridge supplied with fresh milk for tea and coffee and still and sparkling bottled water for use during our stay.

The staff were very helpful, - the hotel is around 7 miles from the centre of Edinburgh, so I was a bit concerned that taxi rides would work out expensive as we had no car having arrived from the airport. There was no problem as the staff arranged for us to be taken to the park and ride by the hotel chauffer - 10 mins away - and from there we were able to get a bus into town (£1.20 each). Coming back from Edinburgh, the X48 Ratho bus goes right past the back enterance to the hotel, and then it is a five minute walk in. You can apparently catch the bus from the front of the hotel, but as the hotel is set in it's own grounds, to walk to the front enterance is quite a long walk!

The food was excellent at the hotel (could not fault it). The breakfast was included in our package - cooked breakfast was excellent and plentiful. We had two meals in the more informal of the two restaurants and found the service and quality of the food to be very good.

On the evening of our anniversary, we went to the more expensive "Ushers" restaurant within the hotel. This is a much smaller restaurant and we found the food and service faultless. Beautiful food and nicely presented with excellent service.

The Spa facilities at the hotel were also excellent and very modern and newly built. I did not choose to have any Spa treatments and can imagine that these get booked up fairly quickly, so it may be best to book these ahead of your trip. The pool was a decent size and the water was warm. The spa area is light and spacious and not oppresive like some indoor pools at hotels.

Overall, an excellent hotel -would definitely recommend for a relaxing break.
