“Good Hotel, Nice Spa, Near Airport”
Reviewed 14 October 2010

I recently stayed out the Norton House Hotel with my wife for a friend’s wedding. The hotel is an old house extended with more modern buildings. We stayed in a standard room which had plenty of space, a good clean bathroom and a large flatscreen LG TV.

We went to the spa but only to use the pool, sauna, steamroom and jacuzi rather than to have any treatments. Everything looked fairly new and was clean. The locker requires a pound coin which is worth remembering because the spa is located in an out building away from the hotel itself.

We had dinner in the Brasserie restaurant and found the food to be to a very good standard.

The hotel is right next to Edinburgh airport, which is convenient if you are flying. While inside we rarely heard any planes going over – the hotel seems well sound proofed for this. However when outside it is quite noticeable how close to the airport you are.
The taxi from Edinburgh city centre was about 15 minutes and £16-18.

There is a good sized free car park with easy access for larger/lower cars.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights en route to Edinburgh. Visitors expecting the location to be close to the city will be disappointed - it's a 10-minute drive from the airport, but quite a journey to the city itself. However, we knew what we were getting so it was fine for us.

The hotel is lovely to look at - a grand old building from the front with modern extensions to the rear, set in a large acreage of parkland. We got a great deal on the superior rooms - well worth an upgrade for the extra space and luxury.

POSITIVES: The spa is great - pool, steam room, power pool, sauna and gym free for residents, with a large bar too. Very relaxed atmosphere.

The rooms are quiet and luxurious, well laid-out, really nice bathroom, very clean.

Free wi-fi in public areas, free wired internet in room, and large flat-screen TV and DVD (with free access to all the Sky Sports channels - bonus for me while the wife was at the spa).

Very attentive staff - all incredibly friendly and really go out of their way for you.

Lounge and brasserie were lovely, and the food was generally very good. Not bad prices either for a nice country hotel.

Location isn't far from several nice attractions, including Linlithgow Palace ruins to the west, and Rosslyn Chapel to the east. Recommend a SatNav though, as the roads around that area are windy and, to be frank, a bit confusing.

DOWNSIDES: Not many. Worth mentioning though that the hotel is a real warren - we had to take two lifts to get from our room to the reception, and go through a maze of corridors (quite tricky after a few glasses of wine) - similarly the spa is a separate building outside, but that didn't put people off dashing across the footpath to get to it :)

The staff did seem to make an inordinate amount of mistakes while we were there - whether it was getting a food order wrong or even adding up our bill upon checkout. However, they really bent over backwards to put things right, so it's not worth marking the hotel down for.

All in all, a great place to stay to unwind, especially before onward travel.

We stayed for one night while heading for home via Edinburgh. It was a Saturday evening and we were searching for a hotel for the night and many places were fully booked. Another hotel that was full suggested the Norton House and we were able to book an executive room for the one night. We had reservations as it was near the Airport but what a pleasant suprise when we arrived, the grounds were lovely and the whole setting was just right. The hotel was very busy as there were two weddings on but the staff were very attentive and helpful. Our room in the new part of the hotel was on the ground floor and was clean, spacious and very tastefully decorated with a super bathroom. The bed was really comfortable and if there was one thing to be picky about perhaps the towels could have been softer, bt this was a really minor point in the scheme of things. We found the staff very friendly and the service was second to none. Unfortunately we had to check out the next morning but we will certainly stay here for longer the next time we visit Edinburgh.

A lovely country house hotel near the airport and the city centre.
Staff were excellent, with the exception of the bar staff who were pretty poor.
Check in was easy, the rooms in the new part were modern and very well equipped. Great baths, showers, large TV, TV in the bath etc.
Health club is 1st class with a great pool and spa.

Food is great in the brasserie and breakfast.

Waiting 30mins for a drink is not good though.

Cab into city centre is £20

We've stayed here several times and it's a very comfortable, relaxing hotel with modern facilities whilst retaining some of the old country house feel to it. The modern bedrooms come fully equipped with large screen tvs and free wi-fi access but I prefer the smaller rooms in the original part of the house.
Afternoon tea is generall very good value for money with a 3 tier cake stand each. Since this is too much for one person it would be a lovely touch if a "doggie bag" was provided. I asked to take home my cakes for my daughters but had them given to me in almost shrink wrapped cling film and they were unrecognisable by the time we got home!
The staff were friendly and with the addition of the new spa facilities and plenty of parking within a few minutes of the airport and about 10 minutes from the city centre this is an excellent choice of hotel. If only we were allowed to take our well behaved dog into the bedroom we would stay here frequently.

GOOD: an excellent mixture of old fashioned and modern rooms. Quiet and perfect situation for City, airport and touring.
BAD: the cooked breakfast was tasteless, soggy, and fatty. The service in the bar and especially at breakfast was poor. The staff was not attentive, seemed bored and disinterested. Very small tables were not cleared of used plates. Toast takes 15 minutes and then gets served to the wrong table.
OUTSTANDING: the spa, fitness, pool facilities are second to none I have seen in 30 years of travelling all over the world.

This hotel is not cheap but has tremendous potential, but being part of a chain shows. The personal touch is sorely missing. So come on you managers and train your staff better. If they don´t like their jobs ( my impression ) get someone else.

We booked our minimoon last minute as we can’t manage our Honeymoon until late September. We were just looking for a few days to relax after our wedding in July. It provided just that. The hotel was in an amazing location and our room lovely. The only issues we had during our break was one of the restaurant staff was very rude to us as he did not realise we were on a DBB package. He had added things onto a bill and got himself a little confused. He wouldn’t listen to what we were saying and became rather frustrated! Another member of staff tried to help explain where he had gone wrong, however this turned out to be wasted efforts as again the waiter would not listen to what was being said. A little inconvenient and embarrassing to be challenged by the waiting staff on our honeymoon, however it is not one you expect from a venue such as Norton House. The issue was so easily resolved the next day at reception, so why the attitude from the waiter? This had already tainted my experience and our Minimoon! Also the house keeping staff were not very particular, I had to fix the base sheets in the bed, they were all bunched up and quite uncomfortable. I don’t expect to remake my bed whilst staying in a hotel.
We would like to return in the future; hopefully the little issues will be ironed out in time.
