This historic old hotel is a delight. The staff is second to none and the restaurant is great. Twenty four hour room service was unexpected but a really nice option. Also had large room on 8th floor, with amazing view. Comfortable hotel, with everything you need, including great atmosphere, convenient location, helpful staff, nice robes, and comfortable beds. We would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I stayed at the Scotsman for one night during our trip to the UK in October. Overall, it was a great stay and we would consider staying again if and when we return to Edinburgh.

We booked the hotel at a reduced rate through an Expedia sale. I'm not sure if I would pay the full price for a stay, but it was definitely a great deal with the discounted price we paid.

The staff were excellent. We were able to check into our room quite early (by 1PM) and were shown to our room by one of the front desk staff. He gave us a thorough tour and overview of our room.

The room is large, spacious, clean, quiet, and comfortable. It has a lot of little appreciated touches (free water and cookies, free newspaper, bathrobes, umbrellas, etc.). The rooms are older with very unique decor - it's definitely a neat experience to stay there.

A few comments: while we were there, the smell throughout the hotel (with the exception of our room) was awful - it smelled like sulfur everywhere! The elevators are also very, very , very small. It felt cramped just having me, my husband, our luggage, and one staff member in the elevators. We actually had to wait for quite awhile on our way to check out - each time the elevator stopped on our floor, it would be full of people from a higher floor and there was no room for us.

The location is good and bad. There was quite a bit of construction in Edinburgh and it was actually quite difficult to figure out how to get to the hotel. Since it is downtown, you do need to pay for parking, although the hotel offers a discounted rate in a nearby underground parking lot. The location is excellent for sightseeing around Edinburgh - it is in the middle of the Royal Mile and is within walking distance from most Edinburgh sites and attractions.

Had a lovely room on the 8th floor. It was very spacious with a great view over the new town. Staff couldn't have done enough for you. Breakfast was good with a wide variety of choices. The pool was really nice along with a jacuzzi and spa rooms. A free Scotsman paper was a nice touch. I just wish there was valet parking as the car park is quite a distance away. Although you can drop your bags off and then park the car this is not always possible with traffic. Would stay again most definitely and the staff are a credit to the hotel.

I loved this hotel. The room was huge for a standard room. I loved being able to open the windows at night for some fresh air and the sound of sea gulls. When I came in from the rain, I felt cozy in the Scotsman bathrobe and I used the pants press and the iron to dry my damp clothes. I even asked them to turn the towel warmer on, which they did right away. So what if the place is old, it’s very welcoming. I would definitely stay here again if another deal was offered.

On the 30th June we arrived in Edinburgh for a two day break. We had chosen The Scotsman because of its central location and interesting previous life (It used to be the offices of The Scotsman newspaper). We had booked through British Airways.
When we arrived we were told our booking had been cancelled due to flooding in the hotel and that BA had been notified by email. We had received no notification and did not want the alternative offered by the receptionist - a room in a hotel 15 minutes driving distance from the city. A two day trip meant maximum use of time and 15 mins commuting every time we went out was far from ideal.
My husband asked to see their email to our agent BA - this did not mention flooding at all but 'technical difficulties' ie overbooking. She then showed us into the bar for a 'complimentary' drink and lo and behold, ten minutes later we were told they did have a room for us!
We were shown to a narrow, dark room with a small window.(We had booked a superior room originally) it was so hot that overnight we had to open the fridge door and have the fan on circulating the cold air from the fridge! I had three hours' sleep and only one more full day left in Edinburgh.
The next day, after complaining about the room,we were shown one on a higher floor which was much more acceptable but this meant a move, again, for just one night.
Throughout the receptionist was most helpful but the time taken out of our two day visit to Edinburgh, the shock of finding our booking had been cancelled and the hassle of moving rooms ,meant that this was far from a relaxing break. It was tiring, and mostly consisted of waiting around whilst the receptionist tried to put things right. She regularly popped into ,Andrew, the manager's, office but not once did we see the manager - no apology from him, no attempt to offer compensation, nothing at all. What very poor service he offered. He needs to be retrained.
I don't think we will ever visit The Scotsman again. It has definitely grown too big for its boots.
We do intend to visit Edinburgh again, if only to see all the things we did not manage to see the first time round.! It is a fabulous city.

Room Tip: Choose a floor on a higher level - the lower floors are smaller and darker.

We have been to the Edinburgh Festival a few times and thought we would try a different hotel this time. All looked good from the website however we were very disappointed on arrival. The theme of the dark and tired lobby continued through to our room - dark, small, poorly lit and musty - rather like a scene from a 1930's b+b. We did ask to be moved as we had paid a fortune for a 3 night booking (as much per night as we have paid for stunning rooms, food and service overseas) and were actually shocked by what we walked in to. The staff were very helpful and moved us to a slightly better appointed room but still not 4 or 5 star and the bed was tiny with a mattress that rolled like a water bed when you turned over on it. Restaurant was ok, but breakfast often cold, again willing staff but not trained to clear tables etc promptly, take orders promptly and bring extras. The whole hotel seems to need a revamp and the prices were extortionate for what was on offer. We would not go back.

Excellent stay in a wonderful hotel.
We have travelled all over the world and stayed in excellent properties, however the superb staff at the Scotsman were above and beyond 5 star service. After reading some reviews we were interested to see the true colours of the hotel, but I can recommend this property as 5 stars.
We had a two level suite on the 8 th floor and it had recently been refreshed as a slight paint smell met us entering the room this was away by the time we returned after dinner.
Dinner was a feast and I very much thank the team for catering for gluten free persons.
Breakfast on both days was busy but we were taken care of extremely well.
Upon check out a very nice chap was dealing with an other guest whom had wanted something on arrival but obviously did not get what they thought they were ordering, he handled it very well.
We will certainly return again, hopefully for longer next time.
Well done Scotsman.
