“Afternoon Tea”
Reviewed 16 March 2014

We have just had a nice Afternoon Tea here with an Itison voucher. We were warmly greeted on arrival and shown seats in the Brasserie and swiftly served a glass of bubbly quickly followed by our cake stand of goodies.

We have sampled quite a few afternoon teas recently and although this wasn't the best the selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam and the array of small cakes was enticing.

We were particularly pleased that the cakes were in pairs so there was no squabbling about who would have what! Especially since there was a delicious mini macaron each filled with tangy fresh orange filling.

We chose to have a pot of coffee and this is the one thing that let the occasion down a bit for us as it was extremely weak. We did ask for a second pot of good strong coffee and this was brought for us and was so much nicer.

All in it was a pleasant visit after a wee trawl round some of Edinburgh's great shops. Would do it again but not sure if I'd be willing to pay the full whack of £50 for two.

Right next to Waverley station so would definitely recommend taking the train rather than trying to find somewhere to park!

We were welcomed on arrival by a very friendly concierge and sat next to a lovely real fire while we waited to check-in. Unfortunately we timed our arrival with a wedding party, but this didn't affect our check-in, although we did have to navigate around them to get to our room.
The hotel itself is a warren of beautiful marble stairways and dark oak wooden doorways. It has retained much of the original features of the Scotsman building, whilst having all of the modern comforts you would need.
I was therefore slightly disappointed with our room as it was quite modern & smart, I had expected something more in keeping, however it was clean & warm. The bed was extremely comfortable - lovely soft, but not too soft, mattress & pillows. It had everything you would expect from a 5 star hotel. The only issue was that I was woken by the music from the wedding party between 2 & 3 am - it wasn't massively loud, just a dull thumping bass. It was enough to keep me awake though.
I used the spa for a manicure. The pool looked amazing and my manicure is great.

We had afternoon tea & breakfast in the brasserie. Both were delicious & the service professional, if not with a smile.

Room Tip: Request a king bed as it seems to be a bit hit & mix. Higher floors might be quieter - we were...

It was our first time in Edinburgh and the location of this hotel was spot-on.
Our room was large with good amenities and a comfortable bed.
If you don't want to sit and read in your room, the chairs near the reception are an option. The third floor lounge was cold and without any reading material. A 5* hotel should have more newspapers and magazines than just the Scotsman.
All in all: We enjoyed our stay.
Staff is friendly and will do anything to make you feel welcome.

Thank you for taking time to record your positive comments regarding your recent stay with us.

We like to pride ourselves on our professionalism, relaxing atmosphere and service throughout the hotel; I am pleased to see that you experienced all of these and enjoyed your stay.
I will pass on your comments regarding the reading material to our Front of house manager. We do have other magazines available for reading the only explanation is that these have been taken by other guests to the rooms. I do apologise.

I hope we can welcome you back in the future.

Kindest regards

I wish I had read the previous reviews! We were allocated room 303 last night and couldn't sleep. Wedding held at hotel which blasted out music until 1am - this we can understand but should have been forewarned upon checking in BUT then the nightclub next door kicked in with rave music reverberating the walls until 3-30am. Impossible to sleep. To be fair staff and management were sympathetic as I understand lots of complaints over the noise. This is a great shame as the hotel is fantastic and the staff are first rate but if you can't sleep?? Hotel Duty Manager was very understanding over our complaint and he handled very efficiently to our satisfaction and has promised to follow up.

Room Tip: Try and avoid rooms near function suites. Editor room/suite was a beautiful room

The staff here are extremely welcoming and are very informative. The room we stayed in was absolutely gorgeous, much more than we were expecting. It was modern, had everything you needed, clean and warm. There has been obvious attention to detail and just makes the hotel even better. Breakfast was delicious and the drinks are same price as everywhere else in Edinburgh. Only thing, if you are wanting to use the spa, book before you go. One of the best hotels I have been to.

Me and my partner stayed in the Scotsman hotel for valentines night. They where very welcoming as we went in and to our room. Rooms where lovely. I must say the bed was very hard and not nice at all. When I told them in the morning they said we should of rang down but at 2 in the morning I'm not changing rooms. At breakfast the man that served us was very rude. Spa staff where brilliant and a lovely clean place

Thank you for your kinds words regarding our staff on arrival and in the spa. We are very proud of the fact each one of staff knows the importance of making our guests feel welcome an I am glad you were able to experience their friendliness and professionalism during your visit.
Thank you for passing on your comments regarding the comfort of the bed in your room I have spoken to my Head Housekeeper, Natasha Meikle with regards to the mattress in your room and she has checked that this is as it should be and does not require any repairs. I’m sure you can appreciate that each of our guest’s have their own opinion and requirements when it comes to mattress comfort and it is, unfortunately, not possible for us to meet everyone’s expectations; I am sorry that this disturbed your stay with us.

I hope that we will be given the opportunity to welcome you back.
