The Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh is fabulous. We stayed there for 2 nights, during the festival. The staff are very friendly, and the hotel itself is gorgeous and perfectly positioned for getting out and about Edinburgh city. It is an expensive hotel and we had booked ourselves into one of the suites. (Can I just point out here the one and only thing that annoyed us about this hotel. When we booked our stay on their website, we had to pay the bill IN FULL UP FRONT (it has to be paid 28 days prior to arrival), no refund available and no cancellation policy. This information only became available to us when we'd made the booking as well which meant there was nothing we could do if we changed our minds. This is simply ridiculous and something I think the management of the hotel should have a serious re-think about. Also, when you check in, you will be asked for a swipe of your credit card, not unusual for a hotel, except they take STG150 off your card to cover any spending you may incur during your stay!!! Hello!!! Didn't I just already pay the bill in full and up front!!!! I'm hardly going to do a runner after forking out that kinda cash!!!!! Madness, utter madness and a bit insulting to say the least!) Anyway, on the day we arrived, we found we could upgrade yet again, (for an extra STG70 per night - hey, what's another 140 quid at this point!) We did upgrade our room and I'm very glad we did too. What a fabulous room! Split level, sitting room downstairs, with LCD TV & computer, tea making facilities and a small toilet. Upstairs, a bedroom with super kingsize (super-comfortable) double bed, LCD TV and a huge bathroom and shower en suite. Our room was fairly high up in the hotel as well, which meant that although the hotel is right beside Waverly Station and our room had a view overlooking it, the noise didn't really cause any problem. You might want to bear this in mind when booking your room. The room was just so comfortable, it was out of this world. We could easily have spent our 2 days just sitting in the room, looking at the view of Edinburgh Castle & surroundings from the window. There are two restaurants in the hotel, the Vermillion and the North Bridge Bar & Brasserie. We never managed to eat in the Vermillion, but we did eat in the North Bridge on the first night. The menu seemed delicious but unfortunately, we didn't enjoy our food there. It was just a case of bad luck for us maybe, a couple of things went wrong but our waiter was very nice and they more than made up for anything that went wrong. We didn't eat at the Vermillion for the simple reason that Edinburgh was just buzzing and we wanted to be out and about in the city. So we are not able to comment on it. Get cooked breakfast delievered to your room though. This we can recommend. It is just delicious and delivered bang on time for whatever time you want it delivered. All in all, a fabulous hotel and a fabulous stay and we'd go back tomorrow if we could (and I'd only book it 2 days in advance just to be sure I didn't have to cancel and lose all that money! Now that would definitely be expensive!)
