“Fabulous but expensive”
Reviewed 22 August 2006

The Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh is fabulous. We stayed there for 2 nights, during the festival. The staff are very friendly, and the hotel itself is gorgeous and perfectly positioned for getting out and about Edinburgh city. It is an expensive hotel and we had booked ourselves into one of the suites. (Can I just point out here the one and only thing that annoyed us about this hotel. When we booked our stay on their website, we had to pay the bill IN FULL UP FRONT (it has to be paid 28 days prior to arrival), no refund available and no cancellation policy. This information only became available to us when we'd made the booking as well which meant there was nothing we could do if we changed our minds. This is simply ridiculous and something I think the management of the hotel should have a serious re-think about. Also, when you check in, you will be asked for a swipe of your credit card, not unusual for a hotel, except they take STG150 off your card to cover any spending you may incur during your stay!!! Hello!!! Didn't I just already pay the bill in full and up front!!!! I'm hardly going to do a runner after forking out that kinda cash!!!!! Madness, utter madness and a bit insulting to say the least!) Anyway, on the day we arrived, we found we could upgrade yet again, (for an extra STG70 per night - hey, what's another 140 quid at this point!) We did upgrade our room and I'm very glad we did too. What a fabulous room! Split level, sitting room downstairs, with LCD TV & computer, tea making facilities and a small toilet. Upstairs, a bedroom with super kingsize (super-comfortable) double bed, LCD TV and a huge bathroom and shower en suite. Our room was fairly high up in the hotel as well, which meant that although the hotel is right beside Waverly Station and our room had a view overlooking it, the noise didn't really cause any problem. You might want to bear this in mind when booking your room. The room was just so comfortable, it was out of this world. We could easily have spent our 2 days just sitting in the room, looking at the view of Edinburgh Castle & surroundings from the window. There are two restaurants in the hotel, the Vermillion and the North Bridge Bar & Brasserie. We never managed to eat in the Vermillion, but we did eat in the North Bridge on the first night. The menu seemed delicious but unfortunately, we didn't enjoy our food there. It was just a case of bad luck for us maybe, a couple of things went wrong but our waiter was very nice and they more than made up for anything that went wrong. We didn't eat at the Vermillion for the simple reason that Edinburgh was just buzzing and we wanted to be out and about in the city. So we are not able to comment on it. Get cooked breakfast delievered to your room though. This we can recommend. It is just delicious and delivered bang on time for whatever time you want it delivered. All in all, a fabulous hotel and a fabulous stay and we'd go back tomorrow if we could (and I'd only book it 2 days in advance just to be sure I didn't have to cancel and lose all that money! Now that would definitely be expensive!)

Very modern and beautifully decorated with all the amenities; excellent food and professinally trained staff, although on the young side. Rooms clean, comfortable and quiet. Superb location. Will go back. Safe for solo female travelers as well.

Service was amazing. Friendly staff at reception, concierge and room service. I loved my room - 904. There were lots of additional nice touches. For example a hatch for your room service so the staff did not need to disturb you, Cowshed spa products and one of those very large shower heads in bathroom. Room was on small side, however everything that was needed was provided. TV system needs looking at - the thing just constantly rebooted on me. (after speaking to collegues who were also staying at the hotel this didnt seem to be just me). Food was really impressive. The room service was of a very high quality and freshly made produce. The bar/breakfast room staff were efficient on the whole, however food took some time to arrive. Overall I loved this hotel. Its usual, funky and quirky

The Scotsman had been recommended to us but we found it disappointing and expensive. The room was smallish (for the price) and there are no public rooms except for one rather bare small lounge which during our stay was being set up for conference use. The bedroom was too hot and had no heating or A/C controls which worked, and despite secondary double glazing the noise from Waverley Station during the night was unacceptable - heavy diesels and loud public address announcements. In truth the building is not suitable for a hotel, with claustrophobic and confusing narrow dark corridors and no "open" space. The hotel has one restaurant, hideously expensive for Edinburgh, and empty, which we did not try, no bar as such, and a public brasserie opening onto the street which is attractive, but with prices which would look steep in Mayfair. It was also difficult at times to find a free table there. The staff were polite but uninspired.

We booked through Expedia and got tiny rooms, smaller than expected, no breakfast included. It's not the facilities that will make us return, but the service from the concierge staff which was extraordinary.

I guess my expectations were a little high but the hotel turned out to be a pleasant experience. The staff was absolutely great. DON'T stay on the 8th floor as the lift only goes to the 7th. The Brasserrie has a wonderful atmosphere. The full service restaurant was qiute nice. (by typical scottish standards) The sayind that " You don't go to Scotland for the food" is correct. But the food was better than most other places.
I would stay here again.

--- knows what Scotsman Hotel the reviewer from Belfast was staying at, because it wasn't this one. Not for nothing is it a member of Leading Small Hotels of the World. We got a last minute, 60% discount deal, so only had the bog-standard room, but it was spacious, appointed in chic, contemporary style and very comfortable from the bath to the bed.

Location is unbeatable, breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Brasserie restaurant was fine and you get what you pay for (if I could recommend any restaurant in Edinburgh it would be Atrium anyway). Service was always with a smile and very helpful. What's not to like?
