“Great central hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014 via mobile

We stayed at this hotel as a couple in Jan 2014. Staff at check in were very professional and efficient. We requested a room looking out to princes st and the views were great. We had no problem with the room and did not find it tired, which I notice other people have mentioned. I would definitely stay here again,as the price was also very reasonable.

The Mercure Edinburgh Princes Street (don't you hate it when it's spelled 'Princess'? It's two princes, not one princess) - anyway - this evidently used to be the finest hotel in Edinburgh, called the Mount Royal - the name is still etched on the outside doors. It is an old building and is starting to look a little tired, although the decor is in good condition and there is definitely life in it yet.

If you're a tourist, and especially if you're visiting for the first time, you *definitely* want to stay here. It's bang in the centre, overlooking the Princes Street gardens, with the castle to the right (as you look out) and the Scott Memorial to the left. Sitting in the restaurant by one of the picture windows is a lovely experience, especially on a sunny day or a clear evening.

Apart from the view, this is now an ordinary three star hotel. The rooms are comfortable enough (the Accor Group hotels really do have the most comfortable beds in the business) although on the small side. The lifts are okay, and you get to your floor by using your room card, so keep it on you. The restaurant is basically all right, good enough for people on a smallish budget, but Edinburgh has so many fine restaurants you probably wouldn't want to eat here as a visitor anyway. As a business visitor, working all day and returning late to the hotel though, I ate here; the quality of the food was fine and the service is good, especially if the restaurant is quiet.

Location, location, location. You can't beat it. The hotel is very close to the train station, the airport bus stop is a few minutes' walk away, and there are many bus stops right outside. The tram stop is a short walk away. Taxis are always available.

It's right next door to the best-known department store in town (Jenner's), well worth a visit.

Recommended for tourists. There are better and more luxurious hotels than this (although at a higher price) if that's what you want, but you won't beat that view at any price.

Room Tip: A room overlooking Princes Street is an absolute must, just for the view.

We chose the Mercure for it's location, right on Prince's Street. We had a lovely room overlooking the street with a panoramic view of the old town and castle. Although the bathroom was small and dated due to the age of the building, the shower itself was new and was easily regulated. The bed and all other facilities were new and to a very high standard. Staff members were all friendly and helpful, especially Jim, a young waiter at breakfast, whose service was outstanding. Breakfast was great and we'd definitely stay again. The only negative was the public toilets beside reception - don't go there! They need an urgent upgrade!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a fantastic view - ask for a high floor to lessen the street noise

A very brief stay at this hotel before a meeting the next day. Room was excellent although I was fortunate to have been upgraded to a large room with view of the castle (well sort of view due to typical weather!)
Breakfast was the usual offering. Staff friendly and attentive, check-out took a matter of seconds.
All in all a fairly good hotel and probably as good as this property has been under its various owners over the years.
No car park or access anywhere close to the hotel by car which I knew but for other travellers may be an issue.

Fab location, on a good shopping street and walking distance to everything. Room not very big and bathroom in need of an update. We were at the back of the hotel but it was still quite noisy, got woke by random noises.

My first impression of the Mercure Hotel in Princes Street was what a fantastic location for a hotel right in the centre of Princes Street in close proximity to Waverley Station. It is perhaps for this very reason the hotel is tired and desperately needing a revamp as it clearly attracts tourists in numbers.
On my way to my room I observed at least 4 bad stains on the hall carpet which looked at as though it had been cleaned by bleach completely removing the colour leaving a distinct white mark. The room was small and not very appealing. The view from my room certainly not looking onto the Castle but a building a short distance away.
I only once asked for something from reception, a charger for my Blackberry only for the receptionist to tell me they don't keep any chargers, c'mon this is simple customer requirements.
I would not rush back to this hotel there are far better hotels nearby.

There were a lot of good things about this hotel, the location being one of them. It's very central and only a few minutes walk from Waverley bridge, which is very handy as this is where the aircoach stops. The royal mile is also very close, but an uphill walk. It's in the new part of town and there are plenty of shops around and nice cafes (I recommend the 'curious tea rooms' in particular, which has an Alice in Wonderland theme). The room itself was also quite good. When booking we requested a modern room overlooking Prince Street, which we got, so we were very happy about that. The room had a good view, was spacious, clean and the beds were comfortable.

However... we had a few issues during our stay that we weren't too happy about:
- The phone in our room kept ringing of its own accord (including waking us up in the middle of the night!) so we had to leave it unplugged. This did get fixed, but only after we reported it for the second time.
- Also in relation to the phone, you need to leave credit card details with reception before you can make an external call. This is no problem, except that we weren't informed of this anywhere. Every time I tried to dial an outside line it kept redirecting me internally. When I asked the staff member on the other end how to get an outside line they were no help. We only realised we needed to leave credit card details at reception to do this when we brought it up when discussing the related mysterious ringing issue above. There are instructions for getting an outside line on the phone, but nothing about leaving card details with reception. I would recommend adding a line to this effect on the phone or at least mentioning it at check-in so that people are aware. I ended up making a couple of expensive calls on my mobile because this wasn’t clear and we assumed our phone was just broken given the two issues we had with it.
- One of the bulbs in our room went during our stay. We reported it to reception and they said they would deal with it, but they never did (this was half way through week long stay, so there was plenty of time...).
- When checking out they tried to charge us for using high-speed wifi which we did not use (free wifi is available, which is what we used for the duration of our stay). When they told us the time and date that it had been accessed, we weren't even in the room at that time. Luckily they didn't charge us in the end, but we didn't appreciate having to argue the point, especially considering the other issues we had had during our stay.

There were a few other minor issues as well, but I don't want to nitpick too much! Overall the hotel was ok, but not great. I might stay again if the price was right, but to be honest I'd rather try out somewhere else. I usually don't care so much about the standard of customer service in hotels, but it was very noticeably poor here.

Room Tip: Ask for a modern room overlooking Prince Street
