Lovely room on the 7th floor with a double balcony overlooking the town. Unfortunately the large wheel obscured the view. Not sure if this is a permanent fixture.
The room was clean and comfortable. Very large bed, small table and chairs, a sofa and a flat screen TV. Bathroom with bath and shower over. The negatives, very noisy vent in the bathroom and no air con. This meant that we had to leave the window open as it was so hot. It the noise from outside kept us awake all night.
Breakfast was not as good as we had hoped. Badly organised and the staff just could not work as part of a team. Didn't get our coffee and one waiter sat a couple down at a table which not only was covered in dirty plates but was still being used - the couple had gone to get more food.
Put the do not disturb sign on the door and as I sat on the bed the door opened and in walked the maid. I didn't even get an apology. Felt quite vulnerable at this point as I could not understand why she had entered the room even though the sign was on ! (Worrying)

Room Tip: Don't get a castle view room if you are staying in the summer unless you can sleep with the cons...

We arrived late but were greeted by friendly staff, offered breakfast at a discounted price. Room was with a view of the castle and Christmas fayre. Unfortunately we were not informed that there was a Christmas work party on the night we arrived and went on till late which we weren't impressed with. On further inspection of room we found dirty dishes and blood on the curtains and on informing receptionist were merely given 'we will let the cleaners know'
Other than that, big (2 singles pushed together) comfortable bed, location and price. Breakfast was well needed next day and very tasty.

What accommodating accommodations! We'd taken the Caledonian Sleeper and arrived at the hotel at 8 am. Not only did we check in early, ie immediately, but we got a newly-refurbished room! Brand new giant shower, great espresso maker, and lots of USB ports for recharging our many i-Things. I always miss shelves in British showers, but otherwise a total win. Fantastic breakfast. Perfect location!

We stayed for a long weekend in a superior room with balcony looking toward the Castle - an outstanding view. The location is great for exploring new and old town and the tram from the airport stops just outside. Generally the hotel decor is rather tired, but the bar & breakfast areas are clean and comfortable and staff were friendly and efficient.

Room 678 has recently been refurbished and is a great and stylish space but could be improved further with a few finishing touches such as; providing some balcony furniture; putting a soft chair (or any second seat!) in the acres of space by the window; adding a fridge for cool drinks; providing power for the kettle / nespresso where they are set out - or on some other shelf space, so they don't have to sit on the floor; providing an alternative plug for the sink so it can actually be filled with water; and fitting a soap dish / holder at the 'wet' end of the shower. These niggles of 'form over function' were irritating for a 3 night visit and could really annoy for a longer stay.... the management here could do with spending a night in the new room, to see that while the design is beautiful, it also needs to be practical.

Great, friendly staff. Seemed to be lightly staffed and did not see a concierge to ask about tours, local information.
Room was clean and adequate. Bar area was relaxing with friendly staff and great view of Edinburgh Castle.

An old fashioned hotel in need of an update, but a superb location with fabulous views of the gardens and castle depending on your room. If you don't have a view enjoy it from the bar / breakfast area. Rooms are practical but small, breakfast is good. But hotel is looking a but tired and is in need if an update
