We actually were looking for a quick meal before another fringe show. So when we went we were actually a bit under time pressure. But we were lucky and got a table quickly and although they had to wait a bit before they could take our order we still managed to have a starter and a main in time to get back to the Fringe venue, thanks to the very efficient service. The food was also very good, with the haggis neeps and tatties being a nice traditional taster of Scotland. And for main we had the fish special and some of us went for the lobster. Both was well cooked and seasoned. So I will happily return on my next visit.

Have been here for few times...Nothing excited but not so bad..
However, the current visit for dinner is quite poor. Just ordered salmon risotto..
The risotto is very overcooked without any taste ..
The salmon is super salty..
Considered as a middle price restaurant, it is not up to standard at all.

We dropped into Howie's before a concert. No reservation. The staff were great and very welcoming. Everything was smooth and professional, quick service too. Wine was good value, fair priced. Food quality was excellent, hot, well presented, beautiful dishes. The teamwork was really impressive and every question was well handled. The staff are a credit to Howie's. We will be going back for certain as this was one of the best restaurant experiences we've enjoyed in Edinburgh.

Howies is in a really good location, and has a lively atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful. BUT - our food was average to terrible. We all started with cullenskink, flavour ok as it obviously had seen some haddock, but absolutely none in our bowls. One of our party had an ok rib eye steak and chips, two had a chicken and walnut salad which was chronically underdressed and walnuts were conspicuous by their absence, really it was a few leaves with a bit of chicken on, worse than ordinary. The worst meal was the scallops with mashed potato and roasted cauliflower. Dreadful! This cost £18.75 but was essentially a scallop starter with reheated mash on the plate. The cauliflower was a smear, this is not a fine dining restaurant so not expected. The mash was Inedible, vile, nasty. And essentially cost over a tenner as the scallop starter would have been about eight pounds. Howies, stick to burgers, steak and stuff you can cope with!

Booked for 8pm, told we we would have to be out by 930pm, then had to pay £10 deposit per person in advance!! Arrived at 8 sharp, then had to wait (outside) for more than 20 minutes before table was available. Little in the way of apology. Once in, suddenly we didn't have to be out by 930 and table was ours for the evening.....confusing. Mussels for starter, all 12 of them of which three were closed, tasty but minimalist, and bread was extra. Main was Sea Bass with potatoes and pumpkin and greens. One potato, which looked like it had been scraped off another plate (3 of us had this and each only got one potato). Questioned this with waiter and were told we had been given extra butternut squash (which wasn't even a component of the meal). Fish terribly dry. Left loads, so had to have a dessert, even they couldn't get affagato wrong and it was perfectly tasty. Checking the bill at the end, they had charged us extra corkage for several bottles of wine we didn't (unfortunately) have. A real let down from a business whose lunch deals I have loved in the past, past £35 for that is taking the mick and potentially ripping of tourists at this festival time. Really disappointing.
