Brooks Hotel Edinburgh
Ranked #83 of 151 Hotels in Edinburgh
Reviewed 6 August 2014

I traveled to Edinburgh this summer and made a reservation at the Brooks Hotel based on other reviews of the property; I was not disappointed. This is a small property with a more personal feeling as opposed to some of the larger chain hotels. If you enjoy this type of experience the Brooks is the place for you.

The front desk staff, especially Emma and Emmanuel, are particularly helpful and always willing to answer questions. My husband and I quickly discovered that the center of the old town is only a short distance away. On the first day we arrived we were early and had to wait for our room, so Emma at the front desk advised us to walk to the Grassmarket and grab a bite to eat. We had a nice lunch at the Fiddler's Arms and found our room ready when we returned. When I say the center of town is not far, I mean about a ten minute walk. If you are a walker this spot is perfect.

As an additional bonus, close to the hotel is a grocery store where you can buy water and small items like fruit or toiletries. It is very convenient. Also, look for the walk on the Union Canal if you enjoy an early morning walk as I do. The room we had was basic but perfect for our needs. We found it to be clean and well maintained. The only reason I gave the hotel four stars instead of five was due to the somewhat shabby condition of the hotel's guest sitting area. It was nice that it was provided, with an honor bar, but I heard others complain about the furniture which was falling apart. These things do not ruin an experience for me, but I think for others this is disturbing. As a plus, off the sitting area is a patio and if the weather is good you can sit outside, which I enjoyed.

Overall, the Brooks Hotel is a great value with a wonderful staff. I would return there and will probably try other Brooks properties in the UK.

Room Tip: The first floor is a little noisy when you are on the street side.

This was a delightful place to stay with staff who go out of their way to help you. The rooms are clean and the beds oh so comfortable. . The room was roomy, and the full mirror on the back of the door was nice. Breakfasts give you a choice of hot meals in addition to fruit and sweets. It was easy to catch a bus to get around, just around the corner, and several places to eat nearby. There is also a nice lounge area and patio There are only two problems. One is the lack of wifi. They had difficulty getting it to the third floor for some reason, but they did try. Second is the lack of a place to put the toilet paper. We had to set it on the waste receptacle and hope it didn’t fall to the floor. There was also a lack of a towel rack for the hand towel.
A special shoutout to David for all his extra help. We appreciated your help and your humor. And we forgive you, David, for your one slip (hint, do NOT take the Timberbush Tours of the Highlands. See my review to know why)

We found this hotel to be excellently located, around 15 mins walk from the castle and other attractions of central Edinburgh.
The hotel has been newly redecorated and the room looked stylish. It was clean and tidy, with good tv, tea & coffee facilities, and good wifi signal on the 2nd floor.
Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of hot food plus specials, we had eggs benedict which were very good.
The hotel also has a lounge room and a patio, with an honesty bar for guests to enjoy a drink.
The only negative point is the parking situation - the hotel only has access to 4 parking spaces in an underground car park around the corner from it, which we had to pay £12 a day for. If you are not able to get one of these it seemed the only other option was to get a meter down the road from the hotel which needs topping up every 4 hours, or find a carpark elsewhere in the city, so it is worth reserving a parking space as soon as you can.

My family and I stayed at Brooks Hotel for three nights in July. We loved it. It is a small hotel with so much charm. The staff are so nice and eager to make recommendations on things to do or places to eat. The rooms are small but comfortable and clean. The hotel is located a couple of blocks from the Haymarket train station, so it is away from the crowd but easily in walking distance to all of the old town sites. It is also much less expensive than hotels located in old town. There is parking available in a nearby parking garage for a fee. Make sure that you book parking in advance because they only have 4 parking spaces available. I highly recommend having breakfast here. We had a great stay and would come back.

Glad we chose this hotel for our recent stay in Edinburgh. Conveniently situated for all that the city has to offer. Friendly greeting from the receptionist who was only too eager to share his local knowledge. Room was spotless, bed comfy and attention to detail was second to none. Breakfast was one of the best we have had for some time, vast choice and service with a smile. Would definitely choose Brooks again.

The hotel is small and homely. The receptionist is charming and helpful. It is an informal atmosphere with a beautiful comfortable lounge and an honesty bar. Breakfast is fresh cooked with good ingredients and interesting options. Fresh fruit bowl as well as yoghurt and lovely cakes. Good coffee too and NOT from a horrid machine. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the bed firm and comfortable. It is in a quiet area and honestly 10 minutes from the Grassmarket. It is also 10 min walk to Princes Street. Buses and taxis available nearby. Taxis are not expensive. The airport bus or the tram is also not very far. I am an experienced traveller and would recommend Brooks for a relaxing and good value stay.

Just returned from a night in edinburgh. Wish it was longer! Hotel was great, fairly central location and fab breakfast. Nice walk to town centre or short walk to tram station at haymarket where an all day ticket is only £3.50. Excellent value for money and bathroom was lovely.

Room Tip: When we travelled there was a circus across the back which was noisy but didn't keep us awake.
