“Great boutique hotel, ideal location for exploring Edinburgh”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2011

Stayed here as a couple last weekend after booking a late deal. We were delighted to find lots of parking and that the hotel had a really friendly atmosphere, reception staff were very welcoming and helpful in giving us lots of information about the city. The room was lovely, comfortable bed (I liked the romance of the four poster!) as well as a spotless bathroom.

Breakfast in the morning was really good and again the staff were really friendly.

The hotel is only minutes from the centre on a bus (stop just over the road and only £1.30, taxi back wasn't expensive either). There is a nice relaxing lounge too with a bar, which was great after a day on our feet!

All in all we had a really great stay, and it made a nice change from the big chain hotels. I've already booked up for my parents who are visiting the city in a couple of months!

Stayed for one night on the 18/7/11, booked on booking.com at a reduced price due to late booking, and paid more for the exectutive room and king sized bed. We were enticed by the 4 poster bed and jucuzzi bath with a 4 star rated and close to Edinburgh with free parking.

The Hotel looks nice from the outside and very presentable, and our room on the lower ground floor seemed great to start with. We had complemetory sherry and biscuits and the bed seemed very large. We soon went out to discover Edinburgh and came back to get ready for an evening out and wanted to use the Jacuzzi bath. After filling up the bath and reading in the instructions on the wall the button was no where to be found to start the jacuzzi, therefore called reception, only to find only two of the jacuzzi baths work in the hotel and those rooms were taken, so we were disappointed as this is one of the reasons we booked this hotel, for a bit of relaxation, We had no four poster bed either. The room itself was quite dark and very warm, and due to it being on the lower ground floor you can only open one window very slightly which wasnt great.

The next morning we both woke up early hours itching, id been bitten twice on my face, my legs and arms, and my partner had been bitten quite badly up his arm, and these bites still havent gone even today and are just as itchy. We told the reception and they could not understand and gave us a small discount, but there must be fleas or bed bugs to cause such bites, the only good thing about this hotel is the breakfast and free parking as the bus stop is literally accross the road and takes 10 minutes into the town centre.

I would rather pay the full amount to stay in the hotel than be bitten to bits, i think they must an infestation to have as many bites as we had, and to think its a 4 star hotel, id expect to be bitten in a travelodge but not staying in a decent hotel.

We are extremely upset by this review. We got this room professionally checked for any infestation immediately on reading this review and we have a certificate to prove that this room is absolutely clear. We have never had any complaints like this before and it is factually incorrect to say that we 'must have an infestation'.

Our executive rooms are not advertised with a spa bath. Some of our rooms do have spa baths but as they don't all have them we do not advertise as such on the portals we use. You booked an executive room which is not a 4-poster room and the differences in rooms are clearly stated on all written material we produce and on all the websites where we appear.

The lock on the window can be removed to allow guests to open it but we have it on there as extra security as most guests prefer this.

We are very glad to see that you appreciated our free private car park, our easy access to the city centre and the breakfast we provide. We have also just had our 4-star status reconfirmed by Visit Scotland.

In July 2011 we had a large family party at the hotel. We all stayed two nights and I can only describe the staff and hotel as 'brilliant'. Everyone was so helpful and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble, thank you.

Totally fell in love when I seen the room, if you got a RX8 or low car, your not going to be able to use the car park to the side. We had the best room at the front with the four poster, excellent light levels, furniture set out correctly and an additional bed put up for our extra guest (who never spent the night) The bathroom was neat, but functional. Ample storage. My sister phoned ahead to organise Champage on arrival as she couldnt be there, was surprised to find it was a good quality real champage, not usually the case. They had a honesty bar, well stocked in the front lounge a godsend when I woke up at 4am craving some cola. Good choice at breakfast, full scottish too salty for my liking but plenty more help yourself alternatives, which I liked. Lovely clean room, propetier has good local knowledge and keeps the place spotless. Bed was really comfortable, and you could enter late at night without feeling guilty of waking somebody up as you had the key. Radio alarm clock with ipod docking station, excellent. Will definatly recommend and stay again.

I stayed here for a period of one and a half weeks, on business with the University of Edinburgh. The hotel is only 10 minutes walk from the University 'King's Buildings', and 5 minutes walk from the Cameron Toll supermarket. The best way to travel into town is by bus, but the bus routes are numerous and clearly labelled and the staff are more than happy to provide directions. The executive suite room was spotless, and afforded a good range of amenities, including free wireless internet, a decent flat-screen tv, bath, tea-coffee and complimentary sherry and shortbread biscuit replenished every day. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are well-heated (though my visit was in summer, with a good run of weather). The honesty bar is a treat, and the furniture so lovely and quaint. I also never felt imposed upon by residents or staff, and the community has a friendly, family-like feel to it. The dinner menu is quite small but the food is adequate. There aren't too many restaurants within comfortable walking distance, and it's best to take a taxi to/from the airport. In conclusion, my stay was very comfortable indeed, and I would recommend it to anyway staying in Edinburgh, but especially for those who are intending to work at the King's Buildings of the University.

Kildonan Lodge is a cross between a high class B&B and a small family hotel and is none the worse for it. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and really couldn't have done more to make our stay so pleasant.
We stayed in one of the basement rooms which was tidy and comfortable and had a jacuzzi style bath with shower over. As it was at the back of the hotel it was really quiet and we had good sleep.
One of the conveniences of this hotel is the car park located behind the hotel which seemed to have plenty of spaces for guests. It is also on the main local bus route so there's no problem getting into town. Actually the weather was nice so we walked to the town a lot of the time - it's a pleasant 20-30 minute walk.
The highlight of our stay was the breakfast. We were treated royally with a selection of fruit, fruit juices, cereals and so on with porridge to order. Then you decide on a cooked breakfast and they will prepare it freshly for you, arriving piping hot with good toast and coffee or tea.
There's a comfortable lounge with a novel 'honesty' bar - self-service drinks and you write down what you've taken.
Before we've stayed in city centre hotels but they lack the personal touch and the quiet, relaxed atmosphere at the Kildonan, so we'd definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Select special rooms for the jacuzzi bath

There was a wedding party at the hotel so perhaps we didn't get the best rooms but they were o.k. The restaurant was good for breakfast but dinner was not -- it was overpriced and only mediocre.
