Staying in Edinburgh for a few days and this hotel is ideally placed - not too far out of the city and frequent buses. We walked in once but then decided on the bus for the rest of our journeys!
The rooms were very comfortable, the staff extremely helpful and the breakfast ample.

We would definitely stay there again.

Stayed here from the 2nd to the 4th August. Staff are very friendly and helpful, advised us on how to get to the centre and what busses to catch and which ones to not. Our room was very clean and tidy. A couple of suggestions would be to maybe have some water and soft drinks in the bar fridge rather than just beer and wine and maybe have fans available for the bedrooms in hot weather, as our room was quite warm on a night. However these are just personal preferences and overall I would definitely recommend this hotel.

stayed for 3 nights in the lodge at the rear of the hotel (room 2) and found all to be good. clean, helpful staff, fantastic breakfast and location is good. far enough out of the centre but not too far away with regular buses and taxis are easy to get in such a big city. would go back here with no hesitation.

I opted to stay here on business for one night having objected to the excessive rates on offer in the town centre. I was very satisfied and thought the Hotel was very good value. Location is fine if you do not mind a 10-15 minute bus or taxi ride into the centre. Rooms are nice, if a bit superficially modernised, but extremely well equipped with everything you would expect in a 4* Hotel ( and more) including iron and ironing board. Staff were great and very helpful, by booking taxis etc.
Self service honesty bar is a nice touch. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Some road noise at front of hotel, but not excessive, rooms at back should be quieter.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, we always appreciate the feedback.
We are glad that you found us good value. We are on a main bus route to the city centre, depending on the traffic it takes about 10-15 minutes to get in to the city centre or on a lovely sunny day you could have a walk in to town which takes about 30-35 minutes.
All our rooms are individually styled. To make our guests feel more at home our rooms are equipped with IPod docking station, TV, DVD play, Iron, ironing board, radio alarm, tea/coffee making facility luxury toiletries and complimentary sherry and short bread.
We do recommend that if you prefer a quite room to let us know in advance and we will try our best to book you a room facing the back of the hotel or in the Garden Lodge. But like you said the road noise is not excessive.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Kildonan in the future.

I had to persuade my partner to stay here as he doesn't like staying in places that don't have a bar for a nightcap. Anyway, he loved it here (even though he didn't expect to).

We were in Room 5 and, to be honest, my heart sank when I saw the number on the door as I'd read a recent review which made mention of noise from the kitchen. Well, I'm a very light sleeper and as such a quiet room is a must for me. Let me assure you, I barely noticed any noise from the kitchen ( or anywhere else for that matter). We had a peaceful sleep in a huge and comfortable bed.

Everything was in fine working order. We had plentiful supplies of toiletries ( replenished daily) along with good supplies of tea, coffee etc and, of course, the complimentary sherry.

These types of old buildings have thick walls and are well insulated so the rooms can become quite warm in summer (even though there's no heating on ). I feel it would be a good idea to have a sheet under the duvet so that if you get too warm and have to kick off the duvet ( as we did ) you can still have a sheet over you..... I personally find it difficult to sleep without a cover of some kind and I think this is quite common, hence my suggestion. Much cheaper option than installing air con which would cost an arm and a leg.

The Canadian gentleman (manager?) who we saw several times, was very helpful and clearly takes pride in providing great customer service. Nothing was too much trouble.

The guest lounge with the honesty bar was lovely to sit in and enjoy their high quality and reasonably priced beers, wines etc (£3.50 for a wine and £2.50 for a bottle of beer is very reasonable)

Breakfast, too, was very good both mornings. Perhaps the continental selection of cold meats and cheeses could have been replenished more often but, other than that, all was very good. The restaurant also serves evening meals which we didn't try as we ate in the city but the menu looked rather nice.

Very easy to flag down a cab outside the hotel ( around £8 into the Royal Mile / Grassmarket area. Lots of buses stop nearby too and the hotel give you a business card bus details printed thereon.

We will certainly return here and have no reservations about re booking Room 5 as any breakfast noise is minimal and doesn't even start till after 8am ( and that's the opinion of someone who can hear a pin drop even with ear plugs in !)

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Kildonan Lodge for one night during a long overdue trip to Edinburgh. The hotel is handily located - ten minutes from the city centre. The room was large, clean and airy with a large bathroom (jacuzzi bath). Very comfortable hotel, very relaxing and homely. The staff were great - friendly and helpful. The cooked breakfast was the best I’ve had in a long time. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone, thank you.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 10 which had a 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath.

We spent two wonderful nights in the Kildonan Lodge. We had a huge room (number 8) which had a four poster bed and two twins added for our kids. We had more than enough room for us, our backpacks, etc. The property was very clean and the staff were superb. The hotel is an easy walk to the Royal Mile (1.5 miles). Breakfasts were nice with the cooked breakfast being much better than the continental selections. If you are looking for a place to stay in Edinburgh that is on the outskirts of town this is an excellent choice. It is very easy to drive to without worrying about crazy traffic or parking in the city.
