Kildonan Lodge Hotel
Ranked #10 of 151 Hotels in Edinburgh
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 October 2013

This was our sixth stay at Kildonan Lodge. I was examining in the University while my wife was enjoying her favourite city.

When we first stayed at Kildonan it was good, but incremental improvements and attention to detail have made it an excellent base for visitors to Edinburgh. While formerly at the top end of the guest house market, this is now a comfortable, convenient and stylish boutique hotel. The style is elegant and understated rather than modern or quirky. The rooms are elegant and comfortable.

The included breakfasts provide a good choice between a good quality buffet and full Scottish and provide a great start to the day. If you want to relax during the day, or evening, sitting rooms in the main hotel and lodge make a pleasant change from the bedrooms.

Off street parking is available and the centre of Edinburgh is a 5-10 minute bus ride away on frequent buses. The only drawback of being on a main road is that, if you open your windows, you are aware of the traffic noise, but it is never distracting,

The free WiFi throughout the premises is fast and reliable.

If you feel like a relaxing day off the tourist beat there are many nice gardens and parks nearby, or Arthur's Seat is within walking distance.

If, or should I say when, I get the opportunity to visit Edinburgh again I shan't hesitate, Kildonan Lodge will be my most likely choice and I will look forward to the welcoming staff and comfortable stay.

Room Tip: We haven't had a bad room, but some of the larger bedrooms with four poster beds are something s...

We spent two nights in this delightful little hotel. Okay, the décor in our room could do with updating, but this is more than made up for by the charm and hospitality of the place.
We wanted to visit the Castle while we were staying in Edinburgh, and this was a short bus ride away. We were given details of which buses to catch into the city centre at reception and the bus stop was almost right outside the hotel.
As I said, the room we had could do with updating, but it had everything you need in a hotel room and was warm and comfortable.
We ate both evenings in the restaurant, which is run as a separate concern from the hotel, and had two very good tasty meals, which were very reasonably priced.
The lady who served us both evenings, was lovely and made us feel very relaxed and special.
The breakfasts were faultless and there was a good choice.
We would not hesitate to stay here again if we were visiting Edinburgh in the future.
The hotel is very well placed in easy distance to the city centre and has a very adequate car park, which is a premium, the closer you get to the city centre.
The hotel is within walking distance of the centre if you are reasonably fit, but it is easy to use the buses.

Before stepping in the front door we were impressed with the location & generous parking, and of corse the impressive building. Then we were met by a lovely young lady, who was most welcoming and helpful in regards to the hotel and transportation (very convenient closeby) and sightseeing of the area. She was adorable! Clean and very pleasant room with a welcome tray of sherry & shortbread, then we were shown to the drawing room - beautifully decorated and a pleasure to relax in, and the idea.of an honesty system for drinks was a joy. The meal in the restuarant for dinner and breakfast was superb.
We had a wonderful stay and only wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you to all the staff.

just returned from two night stay in this hotel. on arrival the manager was there to greet us explained all about the hotel then carried our bags up to our room .we had the black watch tartan family room with a four poster bed the room was lovely with complimentary sherry and short bread . lovely breakfast and nothing is to much trouble for the staff. would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a hotel that has the personal touch instead of the normal chain style of hotel. we ate in the restaurant for both nights the staff were wonderful. our daughter is a fussy eater the chef prepared special meals for her not even on the menu .the lady serving was friendly and helpful and the food was excellent.

We arrived after a six hour drive and if you are looking for a comfortable, clean, modern hotel in an old building that looks like somebody's home, not far from the centre of Edinburgh with good bus service almost at the door, free parking and where, as soon as you arrive, the lovely lady at the reception is trying to make you feel relaxed, Sean rushes to carry your bags and you are greeted with shortbread and sherry in your room, this is it. Since we occupied three rooms, we stayed in the annex and had the run of the comfortable sitting room downstairs and it was almost like being home. When next I return, I am staying here.

Very impressed with this family run hotel. The staff make you feel at home and obviously appreciate your custom. They kindly upgraded us for free to the four poster bed room with spa bath (very grateful). We also enjoyed a dinner in the hotel restaurant - especially when the Christmas music played during our dinner (pretty sure it was accidental, but was funny at the time).

Highly recommend for your Edinburgh accommodation needs.

We arrived off a flight from London and were met by Sean, the live in manager. A very friendly greeting, insisted on carrying our bags, explained the facilities and made us feel very welcome. It was like stepping into a mixture of a lovely Victorian home and a hotel. We had not eaten and it was 10:30 at night, however the chef was kind enough to stay longer and make us soup and toasties, all delicious. We ate in the lounge which is very comfy and a great place to relax.

The lounge has an honesty bar with a good selection of drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The Glenfiddich was a very welcome find!

Our room was nicely decorated with a four poster. The bathroom was modern with a good shower over a jacuzzi bath.

The whole place was immaculately clean and very well looked after. Freshly cooked breakfast was good all three days.

The only reasons I gave this four and not five stars was down to two small things. The mattress needs changing as it was very soft and sloped towards the middle of the bed, and the wifi was somewhat patchy, falling off fairly regularly.

I personally prefer to stay somewhere with character and to avoid cookie cutter chain hotels whenever possible. Kildonan Lodge is a quaint and characterful hotel which is very well maintained and had high standards.

We would stay here again in a heartbeat and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a bit of charm and warm hospitality.
