Stayed here for a weekend in December, very friendly and helpful staff. Great location on one of the main bus routes into the city centre and comfortable, warm and quiet. Sherry and shortbread on arrival is nice too!

Breakfast was ok, otherwise can't fault it

We found Kildonan Lodge Hotel on a TripAdvisor and Hotels.com search of Edinburgh, the price seemed good and the reviews were favourable, so we went ahead and booked up.

Upon arrival, after an eight hour drive up from London, were we're greeted by a very friendly Sean who carried our heavy bags up to the top floor and pointed out our welcome sherry!

We decided to have dinner at the hotel that night, because the thought of going out was too much for us, and we were very happy with the decision. We both chose steak and chips, and whilst both were slightly over cooked, they were tasty enough to get away with it. The chef was very apologetic and offered to rebook them for us, but we declined.

Our room was situated at the top of the hotel, and was really stuffy and hot when we arrived, but opening the window solved the issues after an hour or so. The room was equipped with all the necessaries; coffee and tea facilities, hair dryer, iron and ironing board etc - the iron, however, ended up spewing out black stuff and marking my best shirt, which I was not happy about.

The room we were in was also at the front of the hotel, and due to the heat and the nice weather we elected to sleep with the window open. This resulted in a very noisy few nights which forced us to use ear plugs to ensure a good night's sleep. Not the worst thing, but if you don't have, or don't like, earplugs you might want to avoid a front of house room.

Being at the top may have affected shower pressure, but the shower was not the best. That said, the bathroom was very clean and comfortable, so you can let it go a little.

We were woken up every morning by noisy guests chatting in the small hallway outside the rooms on this top floor. Not really the fault of the hotel, more down to inconsideration of fellow guests, but it shows how thin the room doors must be.

There was plenty of parking out back, but as the hotel was so close to the town centre we took the bus a few times, and even walked home one evening. The bus stop is located just across the road and busses come every five minutes, so there's hardly ever any wait. Fantastic for city trips that involve dinner and wine!

The front lounge of the hotel is lovely and peaceful and includes an honesty bar - so just help yourself and mark the sheet with what you had. The bar is open 24/7. We spent at at least an hour in here most evenings, sampling a few different whiskies! Well, when in Scotland ...

Breakfast was very relaxing, with mellow music to help you chill. The full Scottish breakfast was really tasty and there was a reasonably good selection of cereals and fruit juices too.

We didn't get to use them, but there is a garden lawn and conservatory for guest use, too.

All in all it was a wonderful stay, with lovely, friendly staff and in a great location. We paid a rate that worked out to be £100/night and we were happy with that, given our experience. We'd definitely consider Kildonan Lodge again.

Giving four stars, as opposed to five, because of the few niggly discomforts, but if you're not as fussy as me don't let them put you off.

Room Tip: Back of the hotel, away from the main road seems best

A very traditional place to stay with very helpful and friendly staff. The food was very good and plenty of it. Would have preferred a room on the first floor but I think the only twin bedded room was on the second. Good location on a main bus route. Sherry and shortbread was a nice touch. Quiet location.

Room Tip: Take the hop on hop off bus tour.

I lived at the separate house near the main building. In fact I had two rooms with additional semi-double bed. Everything was very clean. The staff was very friendly. One time something happened with electricity and all was fixed very fast. And I cannot forget about complementary sherry. It is so pleasant to have a sip of sherry after an eventful day and plan your next day sitting in front of the fireplace in the beautiful Victorian living room. I will certainly recommend this hotel to my friends.

Where do I start? We arrived early (1200) and when I asked, at reception, if it was okay to leave our car before coming back to check in at 2, the young lady said let me check if your room is ready. It was and after being given a guided tour of the dining room, living room with honesty bar we were shown to our room in the lodge. The lodge was like our own house, living room, conservatory to use as we wish, the room itself was spotless, the bed massive, sherry and shortbread, nice touch, again bathroom spotless. Breakfast was between 730-930 and cooked to order, excellent start to the day and we were always asked if we would like anything else. All the staff were polite and friendly. We will certainly be back next year, highly recommended.

Room Tip: The Lodge is behind the main hotel and definitely quieter

We booked a one night stay on our way to the Scottish highlands as part of our minimoon. It was a last minute booking, we didn't have too much time to research a hotel, this one looked good on the hotel website, and the Trip Advisor reviews were good. It didn't disappoint. It was very easy to find on the outskirts of Edinburgh and has plenty of parking.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed in room number 1 and found the room and the rest of the hotel to be clean and comfortable. The lounge has an honesty bar which was well stocked. Breakfast was excellent and set us up for our drive north, we would definitely recommend the Kildonan and will be back hopefully in the not too distant future.
