Matthew (the chef/owner of the restaurant) runs a separate business from the hotel and serves the most AMAZING FOOD in the evenings! It's prbably the best meal we've ever eaten in a restaurant!!! You need to book in advance - as places are limited!
The hotel staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The ground floor (with all the communal rooms - lounge, etc) are comfortable and 'homely'. The 'honesty' bar has an excellent choice of whisky! The sherry and shortbread in the rooms is a nice touch! HOWEVER, we didn't get the room we booked - the jacuzzi bath was out of commission -and although we got a bigger room, the shower room (not bathroom) was TINY! There were broken tiles on the floor and wall of the shower room - and the decor is tired! We have stayed in this hotel before and found the same situation then! We read on the hotel website that the rooms had been decorated and upgraded, so we were keen to go back and see for ourselves - as the hotel is well situated for public transport into the city centre. The frequency of the buses is excellent - and only approx. 10/15 mins to the heart of Edinburgh. For the cost of the rooms, the decor - and the beds - are tired!! This beautiful building deserves more!!!
The staff and the food make up for the shortcomings!

Having to travel as part of my job means finding hotels in places that are comfortable and provide excellent services- internet, restaurant etc. THis hotel is delightful, lovely first--class service from the moment I walked in the door. Food at matthew's restaurant was to die for, delicious! I was taken into a ground floor room with a 4 poster bed (!), excellent value for money. Will definately stay here again!

We were upgraded to a lovely large room when we arrived, A comfortable 4 poster bed and lots of character. The welcome we received was very warm and efficient and the service throughout our stay was excellent. Hotel is well positioned, an easy bus ride into the City from a stop just over the road and the Hotel give you a card with all the bus numbers on it.

Lovely reception upon arrival and staff was always more than accommodating. Room was nicely decorated and the touch of sherry and shortbreads was most welcome after a long day of touring. Walking distance from the city centre or a short bus ride. Good food. Honor bar is a great idea. Would definitely come back again. No elevator.

Worth staying for Matthew's Restaurant and he is a excellent chef. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would stay again but would not have the attic bedroom as very small and lots of traffic noise. We did arrive late and had not booked so we where just pleased they had space for us. Will be going back again next year.
