We wanted somewhere special to spend out 26th Wedding anniversary and we found it at the Roxburghe, from the moment we arrived and told them of why we were here we were treated like royalty.

We found the staff really friendly and helpful and made our stay most enjoyable.

The food in the restaurant was first class and the room very comfortable.

We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting some where to stay.

Room Tip: go as high as you can for the view of the castle.

We had a wonderful experience at the Roxburghe. We arrived from the US and were greeted warmly by the staff especially Gavin the Head Concierge. We felt comfortable, welcome and truly cared for from the minute we stepped into the hotel. A Car with a fantastic driver, and a guide who knew ALL the history of Edinburgh, surrounding towns, castles, cathedrals, chapels and golf courses were arranged for us.We LOVED the entire experience. The hotel itself had wonderful spacious rooms, modern bathrooms, great exercise facilities, pool and steam...all the amenities one could want. The pub and restaurant in the hotel were also wonderful. The proximity to the castle and all of Edinburgh by foot mad the Roxburghe a PERFECT place to stay. We want to come back!! Thank you Gavin and your staff for a priceless memory!!!!!

The really good stuff: welcoming, fantastic location in the New Town, lovely decor downstairs, wonderful atrium, nice bars and breakfast etc. The outside signage could make it easier to find! The less good: a hotel of two halves, in that it has been (nicely) knocked together out of an old bit and a new bit. The new bit is just as you'd expect from a modern, fairly up-market hotel chain, albeit a little scruffy, surprisingly, in places. When we checked in we asked for a quiet room but found ourselves looking out over George St (albeit 4 floors up). That would have been ok, but we couldn't get properly hot water, and the TV didn't work. The staff were, however, very helpful in relocating us, and this time we had a room overlooking the central courtyard/atrium, which was quieter and where everything worked. Some of the rooms in the older section are very grand, but they face the street and can be quite noisy. As a venue for a civil partnership and reception, it worked very well. Would I pay that kind of money to stay there again? Probably not: I don't have that kind of money, for a start. But if you're putting a premium on location and a reliable chain of hotels, then it's certainly worth considering.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, get a room facing inwards, to the courtyard (although you might be kept awake by...

Dear Duncan M,

Thank you for your review of the Roxburghe hotel following your recent visit. I am happy to see for the most part that you enjoyed your stay. Please accept my apologies for the issues in your first room and I am glad that the steam managed to relocate you to a room more of your liking and without any issues. Although from time to time we do have small issues such as these, as any hotel does, we do strive to rectify any issue as swiftly as possible and reduce any impact on our guests stay.

I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back again in the future.

I stayed here while on a conference and while it was a good all round stay a few points were definitely not up to scratch. I got upgraded to a big suite, but it was located at the front of the hotel and there was a lot of road noise. I tried to lie in on the last day but it was so noisy - lots of banging and the bed would shake - turns out they were setting up a CD and record fair right under my room. Also the breakfast room was really small and there was usually a queue - not very helpful and it was difficult to meet up with colleagues to share a table. Allow more time for this. The food was good though and the cocktails in the bar were excellent. The beds were very large and comfy and my bathroom was very impressive. I'd stay again but ask to be in a quieter room.

The Roxburghe is a fantastic hotel in Edinburgh! The location of this hotel is perfect. It is on George St, steps from Princes St, and around the corner from Rose St. Plenty of restaurants, bars, music lounges, shopping places, and a even a Starbucks footsteps away. The staff at the hotel really make this place. Gavin, the concierge made our trip such a success. He advised us, arranged us, and catered to us. He is top notch - a true professional full of genuine Scottish charm. He made a lot of arrangements for us ahead of time so that everything was perfect for our 5 day stay. When Gavin had a day off, Leslie did a fine job as well. Everyone from the breakfast waiters to the housekeeping staff to the supervisors in the hallways, greeted my family with kind hospitality. We were given wonderful advice for all our touring and dining. We dined-in our last night and really enjoyed the George St Restaurant. The rooms are ample size, the bathrooms and showers are updated and everything was very clean. Hairdryers, Refrigerators, robes and free WiiFi in all rooms. We took showers, steams, saunas, and swam in the pool at the SPA/fitness center everyday. We went out for a jog one morning and asked the front desk man, Jamie , for a good route and he pulled out a preprinted Jogging Route which directed us to a great run along the River Leith Walk path. Thank you Gavin, Graemme (our awesome driver, arranged by Gavin), and Rob , our Blue Badge Tour Guide for making our Scotland trip such a memorable family vacation. My dad, sisters and I have to come back. We fell in love with Edinburgh! Thanks Guys.

Room Tip: We were on the Fourth Floor - no issues

I stayed on business and after a long journey from Zurich via London it was nice to be greeted late in the evening by very polite and helpful staff. During my stay my key card deactivated, but was quickly reactivated by the staff.

The fire alarm first thing in the morning was not particular nice, but the staff kept everybody calm. My only issue was the very small and slow lift which meant that most of the time I used the stairs as you could not get more than two or three people in the lift
