“Good stay excellent location”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

Good location of the hotel, plenty of restaurants/bars within the immediate vicinity!
On arrival we were upgraded to club class which was great, we also recieved an upgraded room which was nice and big, the bathroom was nice but the room itself was a bit dated!

We stayed in room 242 which was a quiet part of the hotel until 330am when there was on both nights horrendous shouting just below, coming from outside the hotel, couldn't work out if a bar closing or something of that description!

Overall good stay and would visit again due to the value for money and the extras with the upgrade! But would avoid room
242!

Dear Anna Watson26,

Thank you for your review of the Crowne Plaza Edinburgh - The Roxburghe. I am delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and loved being upgraded to Club Class. As a city centre hotel we do experience noise from the street, next time your staying with us ask for a room in our quiet zone to ensure a perfect nights sleep. We very much look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel again in the near future.

Warm wishes and kind regards

First impressions were very good, very friendly staff, both on reception and at the restaurant. The breakfast was very nice, I may even say the highlight. The room was very nice, with nice touches like complimentary water, and chocolates. The only thing that stops me marking it 5/5 is the room is quite noisy. The noise from the restaurant or bar is quite annoying, after midnight you can hear it which when you have work in the morning is a bit of spin. Besides that it was top drawer

My sister and I have both stayed in lots of similar rated hotels through work and holidays and never felt the desire to review any of them as they were all perfectly adequate. The Roxburghe, however, deserves a mention. What can we say except - 'we'll be back for sure'. This place was a real find. Right in the heart of Edinburgh with above average standard room accommodation and facilities. The beds were really comfy and we had such a good nights sleep. The jewel in the 'Crowne' of this hotel has to be it's staff. Each and every one of them were friendly, professional and helpful with no request being a problem. They had a genuine desire to help and made our stay a memorable one. We ate in the restaurant and the food was great and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was also a winner with great choice of hot and cold selections and efficient table service. If you are looking to stay in Edinburgh and comfort, location and excellent service is important to you then look no further. Thanks to all the staff in the Roxburgh, hope to visit again soon.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard are nice and quiet.

Stayed here for valentines weekend. We didn't spend a great deal of time in the hotel, but we were happy with what we did see of it. In particular the breakfast was excellent.

For me the highlight of this hotel is the location. You couldn't ask to be more central. Located at the end of Rose Street on Charlotte's Square, you have everything you need within minutes.

The Roxburgha is a gem among hotels in Edinburgh. The location is great so close to all attractions with plenty of choice of places to eat on the doorstep, there is also a great restaurant on site. On arriving at the hotel we were met by Gavin lead concierge who was happy to help and advise on all questions asked. The breakfasts was plentiful and of an excellent standard being freshly cooked to order. When in Edinburgh this is a must place to stay, looking forward to a return visit soon. :-)

Hotel was in the perfect location for what was wanted, close to the castle and a short bus ride from the zoo. The club access was very good, however, should have been explained to us thoroughly on arrival as we didnt know what it entailed properly. Breakfast was nice and there was a good range of hot and cold options. Will definitely be back in the future.

Stayed here with a friend over the weekend of the Scotland v England match, arrived late on the Friday due to various problems with trains, so we didn't get in til after 1am. I'd emailed ahead to check someone would be available, and sure enough the reception was fully serviced, which was great. The attendant on night shift was really helpful, offered help with our bags and reassured us that - thankfully - the all important bar was still open!

Rooms here appear to be very hit or miss: from the pictures on here, it looks as if those in the older, front part of the building are nicer, whereas ours - in the more modern extension at the back - need a little tlc. Having said that, our room was clean and spacious, just what we needed. Only complaint about it would be the lack of normal plug sockets: 2 on the desk, but everything else had teeny strange sockets, so it was a little annoying to having to keep plug and unplug chargers.

Anyway, aside from that, the only other issue we encountered was the temperamental service. Some people, like the night attendant, and the bar staff - were amazing (and hats off to the bar staff for dealing with some pretty horrendous types on the Saturday after the match). However, we had issues with breakfast staff and the concierge. I'd emailed ahead to the concierge to find out about good butchers in the area. As we were out for the day on Saturday, one had replied offering for someone to run out to a decent butchers and grab what we needed. When we asked on the Saturday morning, the man at the concierge desk gave us a fair bit of attitude, asked why we even needed it and acted as if it was a huge inconvenience. I said his colleague had already offered this, but could get no further so just left it.

The only other issue then was the breakfast. I appreciate it was a busy weekend (certainly on the Sunday), but staff on the first morning forgot about our order, then missed items we'd ordered off, and then on each day something had run out. On the first day it was baked beans, the second ketchup. This is very pedantic but what kind of hotel runs out of ketchup or baked beans?! Just seemed as if they couldn't be bothered.

One last comment: there's only one lift in the part of the building we were staying in. Not sure whether it's just incredibly slow, but it seemed as if the call button on the ground floor wasn't working. They might want to look at that!

Would I stay again? Not sure. Location and some of the staff are brilliant, but think there are better hotels in Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Try and get one in the front of the building, which looked a lot nicer.

Dear London Towns,

Thank you for your recent review of the Roxburghe Hotel following you stay with us for the Rugby weekend. I am happy that for the most part you enjoyed your stay, I am however very sorry that you experienced a couple of issues that were not up to our usual levels of hospitality. I believe that our Head Concierge has contacted you regarding your stay and I do hope he was able to restore some faith in our hotel and that we will be able to welcome you back to the Roxburghe should you be visiting Edinburgh again in the future. If there is anything else that I can be of assistance with please do not hesitate to contact me on opsmgr@theroxburghe.com
