“Pleasant stay”
Reviewed 1 September 2014

Location is very central, hotel is difficult to find in the square - hotel frontage very subtle. We had to park on the square and walk over to the hotel to ask where the car park was, it was a in an obscure location, never would have found it without asking. Reception staff very welcoming and offered us an upgrade to a 2 bed suite for an extra £20 which we took (travelling with an 11 year old). Room was huge and comfortable. The main public spaces in the hotel have been refurbished to a high standard, however the corridors, leisure complex etc look a bit tatty and dated and could do with a similar refurb to the reception, dining and bar areas.

The team here work hard to ensure your stay is second to none - all you need to do is ask. The hotel is in a prime location in the new town, in a classic Georgian building. Ask for a room in the old part if you want to experience quality and historic together.

All of this however comes at a price. I've stayed a number of times and only have a few niggles with this hotel all of them minor, except one that the cost is often outside of the range that my company is prepared to pay! Meaning I have to look elsewhere for my stay. If that were not the case I'd stay here every time! If the price were right this would be 5stars without a doubt.

I stayed at the Roxburghe Crown Plaza for 2 days prior to a bus tour starting. I was with my Dad and sister and had the most enjoyable stay! Check in was a breeze and the staff very helpful and pleasant. Our rooms were clean and although the single room was a little on the small side, it was all one person would need. We did experience a leaking bathroom but a huge shout out to Jamie as he handled the issue and subsequent room move with the utmost professionalism and care for my Dad's thoughts, opinions and comfort. Nothing we asked was too much trouble. Jamie was quite knowledgeable about the area and helped up several time manoeuver our way around the city.Iain was fabulous as well. Very helpful with any and all our questions and very knowledgeable. Both Iain and Jamie had wonderful senses of humor and we had many laughs with them. Cameron and Christiana in the bar were also a delight! Great sense of humor and wonderful wait staff/bartenders. Overall, our stay in the crown plaza made the start of our trip such a positive experience and it was because of such a wonderful staff on hand! Thank you for a great stay - can't wait to come back and visit one day soon!

Room Tip: small single rooms, sometimes could hear noise from the streets below.

I know that the concept of value will differ from person yo person and possibly from time to time. We spent an average of £300 per night here and it just didn't feel like value for money.
This is an old, well established hotel in an excellent position close to Princes Street. The staff were efficient, professional and friendly - especially in the bar. Nothing in particular was wrong and the cost was influenced by the fact that we arrived on the last weekend of the Festival but we just felt shirt changed. The place was pretty full but our room was fairly basic for £400 (without breakfast) on the first night.
A bit disappointing.

Stayed here during the Edinburgh Fringe, great location, great staff and a fantastic hotel. The fire alarm went off during our stay and even that was handled in a prompt professional manner.

I highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed here for the book/fringe festival. The location of the hotel is one of the best, directly on George street and across the street from the book festival.

We checked in and were quickly helped out by the concierge, who was great.

The room was lovely and it's one of the most comfy night's sleep we've had in a while at a hotel. The view of Edinburgh Castle and Tattoo was amazing.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and chilling out in the tea room was lovely after a hectic day.

Okay, now the problems... and they were very few. In fact, some wouldn't even view them as problems. After all, this is only our view.

We were on the 5th floor and the lift to this floor is not just very slow but also small. When it's full you do feel like the lift can't handle more weight than two... although it does, it does feel like it's struggling, and it shouldn't really take more than 30 secs or so to go 5 floors...but it does. Not sure how long but it is noticeable.

The breakfast. Although still nice, it wasn't the best and portion sizes were poor. Which in our book, should fairly equal what you pay...which it didn't. If portion sizes were good and the food cooked well (which it wasn't...overcooked bacon and sausage), we don't really mind. But when you receive a small (any I do mean small) breakfast, with a high price tag; it gets you to wonder why.

The coffee was lovely though and so was the tea. The best in Edinburgh.

Although there were a couple of small problems for us...and they were small, the stay was extremely nice and if we returned to Edinburgh (which we are) we will definitley be booking the Roxburghe.

I stayed here overnight with my son when we came up for the Edinburgh Festival. Wonderfully efficient and helpful staff, reasonable sized room overlooking the courtyard, lovely bathroom, delicious breakfast. The Roxburghe's location on Charlotte Square makes it ideal for the Book Festival and window shopping for clothes on George Street, as well as being an easy walk from Prince's Street and the Royal Mile. It was well-kept and comfortable, and only the standard large chain hotel decor in the bedroom (I prefer a bit more individuality and charm), and a minimalist approach to toiletries in the bathroom stopped me giving it a fifth star. However, we'd happily stay here again, and next time I'd try and remember to bring swimming things, to try out the spa.
