“Really Nice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2013

My wife and I are pensioners and we recently spent three nights at this hotel and we loved it. We booked on a BB&EM basis. The breakfast buffet choice was very extensive and the food quality was excellent, while the three course evening meal, although having a somewhat limited choice from the menu because of the fact it was pre-booked at a discounted price, was also really good in terms of value and quality. The only fault I could find was that drink prices at the hotel bar were expensive and the bar itself was very uninviting and impersonal. The service provided by all members of hotel staff we met was both friendly and efficient, with the girls on the desk being worthy of a special mention for a rapid resolution of a billing problem. We had a room on the 6th floor with a splendid view of the city. The 2 hotel lifts were excellent. The room was clean and of a decent size, but the bathroom was quite small and the room had an adjoining door that made it somewhat noisier. As others have said, the hotel is located around 10 mins from the city centre by bus, with bus stops located on the road immediately outside the hotel. Bus fares have recently increased to £1.50 each way and the buses run every 15 minutes until late. Another bonus is that the hotel is located opposite an out-of-town shopping centre with a host of shops including an M&S and a large Sainsbury's. Well done Hotel City West, we will definitely be back.

Just stayed for an overnighter to allow a quick shopping trip to Edinburgh.

Room nice and good value , though we had to ask for the robes etc which were part of the deal.

Also part of the deal was the evening meal which was quite simply dreadful. Very limited choice on our deal and the service was appalling.

We will use the hotel again but only for bed and breakfast.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a deluxe room !

Dear Bluebobby,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of our hotel. I'm happy that you liked the room and the hotel, but am sorry to hear that you had a negative experience in our restaurant. I would be very greatful if you could contact me at the hotel and provide me with some more feedback, I would like to pass your comments on to the Food and Beverage manager and Head Chef to address the issue you faced.

Kind Regards

This is a pleasant hotel that is very good value for money.

We arrived quite early and received a very warm welcome. Luckily our room was available, meaning we could unpack and get out and enjoy the day.

Our room was on the top floor and looked towards the castle which was lovely. There was a sofa that we turned round so we could sit and enjoy the view. The room itself was a fairly typical Holiday Inn offering, but it was clean and the bed was comfortable.

The bar wasn’t that inviting and the restaurant prices were expensive, so can't really comment. However breakfast was nice with a reasonable choice of hot and cold food. Fried eggs were made to order and the waiting staff were very friendly.

We know Edinburgh well and the location suited us. A 10 minute stroll takes you to the Stockbridge area which has a nice range of independent shops, bars and restaurants. There is also a retail park across the road from the hotel with M&S, Sainsbury’s, Boots, Next and a host of other big name retailers. The walk into the city centre takes about 40 minutes, but the bus network in Edinburgh is very good and there is a bus stop near the hotel.

For what we paid, this was a lovely short break. If you are looking for a hotel with extra trimmings, this isn't the best choice. But for a pleasant hotel with easy access to the city and beyond I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor looking towards the castle.

We booked this hotel on lastminute.com on the top secret hotel deal and was very happy when we found it was a holiday inn. Having stayed at holiday inns previously we had quite high expectations.
We arrived at the hotel to see some building work being carried out outside so was a little weary, the exterior isn't very appealing but the interior is very modern and clean. Our room had two decent sized double beds and a large tv, tea and coffee and everything you'd expect. The tap in the ensuite was leaking but we didn't complain about it then so can't complain about it now. For the reason we think the shower pressure wasn't very strong.
We stayed in this hotel for two nights and parked in the car park but actually relied on the bus in and out of town, its only £1.40 and took about 10minutes, much less hassle than driving.
The receptionist JANA, really bent over backwards to help me print an application form off the Internet. She was extremely helpful, and very cheery - nothing was too much trouble.
Breakfast was very filing and included everything you could possibly want, including pancakes!
Would definitely recommend. Cheap and very cheerful.

I stayed at the hotel and was very happy with the service and overall value of this hotel. The facilities including the child's playarea were excellent. The reception staff went above and beyond to help, breakfast staff very helpful and friendly. Would recommend to all.

I've been staying at the hotel for the past 2 years and I would like to thank all the staff and management for making me feel most welcome and going out of their way to make me feel at home. The hotel does not have a fitness centre which is the only down side, but overall the service and friendliness of the staff make up for it. Also because it is smaller that the larger holiday inn in edinburgh you get a more personnel service and this is important if you're going to be there for more than a few days.

Room Tip: I had room 407 - it's the only suite with a mains socket in the bedroom and because it is at the...

Just back from another excellent weekend at the Hi City West. Really disappointed to read some of the poor reviews on this site as we've always had a fantastic stay with great rooms and good service. Feel that some of the reviewers are perhaps being a bit "picky". We usually manage to get an outstanding deal as Priority Club Members, the hotel is easy to find from the Forth Road Bridge, has ample free parking, is directly on a regular bus route into the city, has fantastic views, friendly staff....what more could anyone want? This is always our first choice for a stay in Edinburgh and we'd be reluctant to try anywhere else. In fact, we're just about to book up again for another weekend soon :)

Room Tip: Ask for a castle view room if possible.
